She found a unique niche and created greatness inside of a space that no other singer could enter. Have you noticed that not many other singers recorded her standards? She stood alone inside of greatness. Hope you understand...
She didn't need to create a niche - she was Nancy. And being Nancy WAS her niche. There's only ever one. Not for nothing but standards are sung by many, many people. That's how they become standards. But certainly, no one ripped them like she did. She retired several for sure.
WHAT A AMAZING CRITIQUE CAUSE THIS IS TRULY A MASTER CLASS IN TECHNIQUE, PRESENTATION , AND A WHOLE LOT OF CLASS. THESE ARE THE MAKING'S OF FANCY NANCY ❤❤❤
An absolute GEM and lady of grace, elegance, class, sophistication, and TALENT! Rest in angelic an eternal peace, Miss Nancy Wilson - a "Lady with a Song".
2022 still listening! Thanks to my beautiful and exquisite mom sharing her visits going "up north" and sharing all her lengendary big band friends' and singers' memories. Ms. Nancy was one of those favorite mememories. I'm still so grateful, blessings mom👑❤🙏🏾
Grew up listening to Nancy; had the opportunity/pleasure of seeing her live performance at a concert in my home country in the mid-1980s. She was elegant, poised and beautiful in a red evening gown I'll never forget. Years later while living in California, I bought a collection of cassette tapes (who even remembers these?!!) of her music. Still a delight to listen to Ms. Wilson today in the year 2020.
I saw her live once in a concert hall with about 800 in attendance. She made it feel like i was the only one in the audience and she was singing directly to me. Timeless talent...
When I was in high school, she was in her forties and I was in love with her. She was always a great song stylist. She could mold a tune to her liking. RIP Nancy.
My sister and I were told we looked like Nancy. We blushed as teenagers 😂😭 ( I wish). Looking at her here, she had the most gorgeous hair and she's really beautiful. A friend met her and said Nancy was really sweet. 💐
I consider Nancy to be the greatest vocal stylist of all time...in a category all by herself. Few ever mention her trio as well as Llew Mathews on piano. Llew is an absolute musical master on the keyboard. No one else has ever accompanied Nancy as well as Llew Mathews. I once ran into him in a music store and introduced myself. He was surprised that anyone would recognize him. We talked a bit and he gave me his personal cell number. He was a very humble and down to earth guy. I was thrilled to have met him.
The ONE AND ONLY NANCY WILSON ⭐️ in a league of her own ⭐️ One of THE FINEST FEMALE VOCALISTS EVER ⭐️ what a Beautiful Lady ~ Class ~ Elegance ~ Perfection ~ R.I.P. Miss Nancy Wilson ~ greatly missed ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Yes! The FANCY MISS NANCY WILSON has always been a smooth, elegant lady. I still remember her with Cannonball Adderley on that iconic album cover. Beautiful. We've had the very best in musicians despite racism.
Younger generations after the Boomers don't love melody, which was the heart of the great standards from the Broadway musicals. Until we return to a love of melody, music will always decline. There are some young people who love melody, and thanks to them for continuing the standards.
Richard Wallace I agree completely, though I was born in the early 70’s, my musical repertoire reflects a boomer. I’m also a jazz musician. This is real melody and music! Thank-you to your generation and the one before for the beautiful melodies and music. I carry it forward with honor.
My UTMOST FAVORITE female jazz song stylist like she used to title herself. My oldest sister introduced her to my life at 18 now I'm 57 n she still amazes me n my soul. I love love love love FANCY NANCY. So beautiful so classy so hip so it all. Does not get any better. Bless u Nance forever. Mz. B
I have loved you, Nancy, since I was 7 years old listening to your albums as my brother played them all the time. That was many, many moons ago, and I am still your number 1 fan! What a voice! You are a SUPERSTAR!!! I LOVE YOU!!!
Every year, year after year, in the late 60's, Nancy Wilson would be awarded the then prestigious "Female Vocalist of the Year" position by Playboy Magazine. (Sinatra would win for best Male vocalist of course.) She continued to sing as well or better for many decades to come. Long live the great Nancy Wilson!
I got to see her up close and personal back in the 90's AT BLUES ALLEY IN D.C. ...she was stunningly gorgeous and sang like an angel...RIP beautiful lady...
Nancy did things that no other jazz vocalist has, or could, do. I love her long tones (a cry from the soul) on "Hello Like Before," "If You Are But a Dream," and "Love, I've Found You." She bends pitches, playing with micro-tonality and even Coltrane multiphonics. I don't think she's been given sufficient credit for her artistry--which places her with Sarah, Ella, Billie and Carmen. And what a leading actress she could have been on a TV series or the big screen--a masterful interpreter of lyrics, in total control of language, an announcer for NPR who never missed a syllable. Around 2005 she released an album that betrayed some of the "wobble" that began to plague Ella late in her career. I'm glad I could bring my daughter to hear her in concert circa 2000.
I have some 5 albums of the 60es with great orchestration. Thinking about she prefered life recording as Frank Sinatra - these Album have a very sound high quality. Wonderful Lady ;o)
There's no one like her!!! No lady in jazz feels a song like she does....of course there was Billy Holiday...different style, different era. The things she does with her voice unique and one part is akin to yodeling but, there is much more to listen for.Simply wonderful!!!
I fell in love with her as a kid when my dad played her records. I would save money while in collage to see her whenever she was performing in NY. Beautiful voice. RIP my beautiful sister. 💖
how does she memorize so many tunes? she must have sung at least a million of them over her career of what? 60 years? she must rehearse all the time. amazing. and, she always sounds so good when she sings live.
1993 New Year's Eve in Seattle I had the privilege of bringing in the year with who else but Ms. Nancy Wilson for a celebration concert. Nancy was her usual class personified self...I'll never forget the experience. Thank you Nancy!
Thanks so much. There are those who classify Nancy as a "stylist." Way off target. She was one of the great female jazz singers of the last century--often pushing the envelope while capturing the dramatic intensity and mining the emotional depth of a song. She could afford to take chances--making you wonder "where did that sound come from?"--because of her complete mastery of pitch and rhythm but also of language and inflection. She was the "John Coltrane of female jazz singers." You could always count on her to "challenge" you.
I was 17 years old and caught this on PBS. This is the performance that turned me on to the genius of Nancy Wilson. Thank you for posting this! I've been looking for the complete performance for years.

Ms Nancy Wilson THE VERY THOUGHT OF YOU......You are one of a handful that has brought me to a world of music, real music,, Thank God you were with me,,,Yes I live I sing and hold you ever so dear to my Heart ,,,,,
I am mesmerised by her voice and performance. This is the first time I saw her singing this most gorgeous ballad, "I Was Telling Him About You" at a live performance. "I Was Telling Him About You" is her signature song. She nailed it from the first note to the last. It shows why she is regarded as one of the best interpreters of the songs!!

She does have that special spang-a-lang kick your ass attitude. She sounds great on everything she ever sang for us and the world.
Well, I guess at age 60 I'm old enough to say it: They just don't make music like that anymore. She's a class act.
+relztrah I'm with you brother! 60 and loving this woman and her music.
+Old Man from Scene Twenty Four i'm 26 and i know!
+relztrah agreed!!!
I'm 50 and agree with your 100%!
I'm 41, and I also agree.
This is amazing. Vocally she's leaping around all over the show, but her intonation, control and placement are absolutely rock solid. A masterclass.
WHAT A AMAZING CRITIQUE
CAUSE THIS IS TRULY A MASTER CLASS IN TECHNIQUE, PRESENTATION , AND A WHOLE LOT OF CLASS.
THESE ARE THE MAKING'S OF FANCY NANCY ❤❤❤
Nobody did lounge jazz like Nancy. She just oozes class and style and unique flair all her own. Nobody like her.

Nancy's voice here sounds just as great as it did in the 1960's. Remarkable. Still a beautiful woman.
For all those that gave a thumbs down !!! Some people have way .Some people no have way
When I was in high school, she was in her forties and I was in love with her. She was always a great song stylist. She could mold a tune to her liking.

Velvet. So glad this concert is available to watch.
One of the great all-time jazz singers. A night with her would last a lifetime.
RIP Nancy.....Heaven got a new Angel.

You lucked on that one, pal. Visit her catalogue on iTunes and get ready for some serious warbling.
My mother had an album of Nancy's back in the mid 60's and I thought she was the most beautiful woman in the world. Still do. LOVE this woman!

caponsacchi Wonderfully expressed with concise acknowledgement of the great talent Miss Wilson embodies. So, "Right on!"

just watched this two nights in a row. tomorrow night's lookin' good, too.
I absolutely adore this woman!
how does she memorize so many tunes?
she must have sung at least a million of them over her career of what? 60 years?
she must rehearse all the time. amazing. and, she always sounds so good when she sings live.
Its a brain thing. If you're passionate enough about sobering, you develop higher latent abilities in regards to it.
William Ware No rehearsing ...Excellent Memory ;)
William Ware She is a professional.
I love Nancy, but honestly it's part of the job...a lot easier if you view the lyrics as a story, as a good singer will.
WilliamMichael ITS HER GIFT AND PROFESSION! 💐🌹⭐️🌟✨🎁
Exudes Joy!!! I was telling him about you! Also, Guess who I saw! Man, she sings those types of tunes just fantastically!

@Alan Townson, thanks. At about 37:33 Nancy introduces the band: Llew Matthews, piano; John B Williams, bass; Roy McCurdy, drums.
