- The Death Of Mary Of Teck
The final rites for Queen Mary, previously known as Princess Victoria Mary of Teck and the widow of King George V, occurred on March 31, 1953, at St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle. This followed her passing on March 24, and prior to the funeral, her body lay in state at Westminster Hall. She died just shy of her 86th birthday and a mere ten weeks before her granddaughter, Queen Elizabeth II, was to be crowned.
During her last year, Queen Mary grappled with profound grief following the death of her son, King George VI, the third of her children to pass away before her. Her health had been deteriorating due to a gastric illness, confining her to bed for about a month prior to her passing. Reports suggested that in her final month, she seemed to come to terms with the reality of her condition, feeling that she had accomplished her goal of safeguarding the monarchy and accepting that her life was reaching its natural conclusion. She also experienced discomfort from the light in her room, leading to the drawing of the curtains to shield her eyes.
On the 24th of March in 1953, Mary reportedly suffered a hemorrhage, prompting immediate concern for her health condition. At 11:40 am, a bulletin released from Marlborough House addressed these concerns. Subsequently, a second bulletin at 1:40 pm detailed a significant deterioration in her state, indicating a severe weakening of her heart function.
As the day progressed, updates were issued: at 7:00 pm, it was reported that Mary was gradually losing strength but resting peacefully. Tragically, she passed away in her sleep at Marlborough House at 10:20 pm. The official announcement, released at 11:15 pm and signed by Sir Horace Evans and Lord Webb-Johnson, confirmed her passing. Her daughter, the Princess Royal, was by her side during her final moments.
Throughout the day, Mary's children and various members of the royal family gathered by her side. The Duke of Windsor, her eldest son, had visited her twice that day and returned to Marlborough House shortly after her passing. Both the Princess Royal and the Duke of Windsor had curtailed their holiday in the United States and the West Indies due to their mother's worsening condition.
Her other surviving son, the Duke of Gloucester, her granddaughters Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret, her daughter-in-law Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, and additional members of the royal family also paid their respects on her last day.
The day following Mary's passing saw a steady stream of royal family members visiting Marlborough House to pay their respects. Notably, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, along with a host of other relatives, gathered to honor her memory.
In the midst of this, a spokesperson for the Duchess of Windsor, who hadn't accompanied her husband to Britain, expressed her deep distress at the news of Mary's passing.
Reactions to Mary's passing were deeply ceremonial and widespread. The banner of her arms, which flew over Marlborough House, was respectfully lowered following the announcement of her death. Across government buildings and warships in the UK and throughout the British Commonwealth, flags were flown at half-mast as a sign of mourning, remaining so until after the funeral.
At 10:45 pm, Prime Minister Winston Churchill solemnly informed the House of Commons about her passing. He introduced a motion of condolence, which received support from Clement Attlee, the Leader of the Opposition. The Federal Parliament of Australia also paid tribute to her legacy.
Condolences poured in from various international figures, including Pope Pius XII, the King of Sweden, U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, French President Vincent Auriol, German President Theodor Heuss, South Korean President Syngman Rhee, and diplomats from the British Commonwealth, among others.
The news of her demise prompted an interruption in BBC programming at 11:25 pm. All regular broadcasts were halted, making way for news updates and weather forecasts. The following day, both courts and the London Stock Exchange held a brief moment of silence before resuming their activities.
The Royal Household observed a month-long mourning period until April 25. Official engagements involving the royal family were canceled during this time, respecting Mary's passing, although the coronation plans for her granddaughter, Queen Elizabeth II, proceeded as per Mary's expressed wishes. The location for her funeral shifted due to preparations for the upcoming coronation, with Westminster Abbey ruled out as the venue.
Queen mary did more to save the monarchy than she gets credit for! Amazing lady
It’s so amazing and beautiful that Mary’s one and only daughter the Princess Royal was by her side when she passed, the the same way her granddaughter’s (Lilibet aka Elizabeth II) only daughter and Princess Royal was by her side in the end.
Yes your comments were a reminder to me. What an incredible Woman she was. 👑🇦🇺
When you look at her, she was a handsome woman and her granddaughter QEll favored her so much. So does THE PRINCESS ROYAL ANNE and Prince Andrew, in my opinion ✌️❤️😎
So does her great, great granddaughter, Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor.
Randy should never be mentioned. Along with tampons he is a big embarrassment
My favorite British consort. What a remarkable woman she was.
Absolutely 👑🇬🇧🇦🇺
Amazing woman... Absolutely amazing ... Rest in Peace 🙏 HRH Queen Mary 👑
H M Queen Mary!
Thank you. This was so interesting!!
Thank you!
THE BEST QUEEN THAT england had in a 100 years!,❤
She had the best taste in jewelry 💍.
That she did!
@@geen-gekopieerde-naam she did indeed.
Yes, and she sure had alot
WHEN I USED TO SEE PICTURES OF HER, NEVER SMILING, SERIOUS, I THOUGHT SHE WAS SNOBBISH. THAT COMPLETELY DISAPPEARED WHEN I LEARNED SHE WAS PAINFULLY SHY.
It could also be part of a habit that she has from early photograph techniques. They always had you pose not smiling cause you have to hold it for several minutes. If you look at old photos in the mid to end of 1800s everyone poses like that. It was just too hard to keep a smile and always make sure you're in a comfortable position because if you moved it blurred the photograph. This continue in to the early 1900s out of habit. Even as photography became better people still held on to this just because that's the way all pictures were taken for so long.
I love reading about Queen Mary, and I can see the late Queen Elizabeth in her looks. The photo at 8.03 is not her husband King George V its taken with his brother Albert she was engaged to him but he died, so she married George instead.
Mary of Teck is my favorite royal from the U.K.She had amazing taste and was able to acquire quite a few large diamonds.
Great channel! I have subscribed months back. Keep up the good work. ❤
Thank you for your kind words!
Queen Mary not only safe guarded the monarchy, she's also the reason the monarchs have such an incredible collection of jewelry. When the Russian revolution occurred, many of the aristocracy, AND the new communist government, sold off their spectacular jewelry at rock bottom prices. Queen Mary snatched them up promptly. So much of the royal collection is directly tied into much of the history of Europe. She was a grand ole Dame whom Queen Elizabeth used as her role model, and she was ardent student!
Beautiful pictures and a great documentary. Unfortunately, I cannot understand much of what this woman says. She desperately needs to work on enunciating her words. One word runs right into the next one.
I love her Majesty's taste in jewels, how she took back the emeralds that her brother gave to his mistress, how she rose above the ridicule of her obese and 'poor' mama and how she was devoted to the monarchy. She gave no quarter to the woman who had the misfortune of marrying her 1st son, The Trator King ( Edward XIII ) .
Edward V111 (8th) X111(13th)
Her and her husband were both good looking. Hence they produced good looking children. Letters to her bth King George showed a much softer side to him.
Enjoy your very interesting channel 👑
Thank you so much!
Grena-dier (hard A & deer).
Its Tek not Tec.
TECK
It is Teck not Tek.
None of them were attractive to start with. Well Margaret
I kind of agree. Margaret and Andrew were not really pretty or handsome, I think that they were just not ugly dogs like the other family members. Diana and Catherine brought in a chance for some more attractive offspring.
Elizabeth looked almost just like Margaret, just a slightly understated, toned down version of Margaret.
Known widely as 'Mad May'
By whom? I have never ever heard that, nor can I find anything to corroborate what you say, where did you learn this?
@@jackieporter5323 by everyone who knew her, it's well recorded
what are they more then a lot of blingbling...
She will be turning in her grave seeing how Tampons is ending the monarchy 😢
You are being ridiculous and you sound like a 5 year old . King Charles is doing well and queen Camilla has proven her loyalty and love to Charles her duty and country.
She will be turning in her grave to see everything she worked so hard for destroyed by Cowmilla parkup bowels 😢
