    I love how Doomguy himself just doesn't care about the plot. He smashes monitors telling the story, ignores most advice and just destroys important machines and objects. It gives him personality without needing to give him any dialogue and makes fun of Doom having a story to begin with.

    It's still weird to me how people can consider the demons in the original Doom to be intimidating or scary. They stopped being scary to me after I learned that shotguns were a viable means of exorcism.
    One thing I do like is that they subtly characterize doomguy in this game.

    • @LGR

      Doom in todays standards is not scary, but back then it would have had a level of scare factor to it, I mean the lost souls probably jumpscared plenty of unsuspecting new players, along with pretty much every enemy alert sound, in addition to the fact that the boss alert sound can be heard anywhere on the map, giving you a feeling of dread as you know that something big and probably not to friendly has woken up and you don't know where it is.

      @@LGR Oh stop bullshitting. Doom was never scary. Neither was its sequel. It didn't take itself seriously enough to be scary, and there sure as fuck wasn't any scary atmosphere. How the fuck is metal music and shotguns scary? Now if you were to talk about Diablo or something, that I could understand.

    To me, the complete jettison of the horror elements kinda fits as an escalation of the player's experiences throughout the series. You were intimidated in Doom and Doom II, terrified (maybe) in Doom 3, but now you've been through this so many times you're not even remotely afraid anymore in Doom 2016 and the forthcoming Doom Eternal. It's kind of like growing up; the things that terrified you as a child aren't so scary anymore now that you're grown up and mature, and you're ready to fight back for real now.

    I mained the super shotgun in this game. Sure, when you had the Faster Reload and Uranium Coating power-ups it became a bit more powerful, but when you gave it the Double Trouble power-up, you became unstoppable. I'd shoot rapidly with really quick reloads, applying the maximum amount of damage within seconds.
    Best gun ever.

      I usually main the Gauss Rifle (with mobile turret mod or whatever it's called) when I get it, followed by the Rocket Launcher (with lock-on because, well, duh) as my second, then the Plasma Rifle (don't really ever find any occasion to use _either_ of its mods) and assault rifle (with micromissile rounds) are tied, with Chaingun and Shotgun then also being tied for last place. I never really used the Super Shotgun that much because I didn't really know for sure what it could do, *_until_* my most recent playthrough, when I finally tried it out only to learn that it's pretty badass. Doesn't seem to be quite as powerful as the Gauss Rifle, but it can easily put mid-tier enemies like Imps into stagger mode for a quick Glory Kill, so I like using it occasionally.

    Have to agree on the visual design. The Mars parts look pretty damn good in my opinion, especially when things get gory, but the Hell levels are disappointingly tame and toothless. I was hoping for a surreal mess of Escherian architecture and sky-high piles of maimed corpses, worthy of a death metal album cover. Instead what we got was a drab, Darksiders-style Saturday morning cartoon netherworld with oversized bones and skulls.
    But that and a few other minor complaints aside, I bloody love this game. In fact, I'd argue that out of all the modern arcade shooters it is the best I have played so far. The Shadow Warrior remake was entertaining, but it honestly feels cluttered and almost clunky when put next to DOOM's focused and condensed shooting and movement mechanics.

    • @Blurgleflargle
      @Blurgleflargle 8 лет назад +7

      OK, in hindsight I guess there's at least a plot-related reason for the Hell levels being the way they are; this is very much a "post-apocalyptic" version of Hell, which had been completely devastated in previous events by the DOOMguy's genocidal rampage (and as such made "safe" for the UAC to invade and exploit Hell in the first place, which means the DOOMguy was actually sort-of responsible for the whole mess). Which in turn means that in the upcoming DLC or sequel we might actually get to visit a reinvigorated level of hell, something that is more akin to the shapeshifting mess of fire, psychedelic colours and maimed bodies from the previous games.

      @LGR  8 лет назад +78

      Not really. SnapMap is their version of "modding," although it isn't modding in the sense that most think about it with PC gaming. It's an official tool, but what it lets you do is pretty restricted compared to true custom content that mods would provide.

      +DurradonXylles Just because Bethesda owns Id now, doesn't mean there will be a crossover in sensibilities. It could also be there's some reason (good or not), that we don't know of, that means no modding support. Perhaps the engine wasn't designed for modding in mind. Perhaps this Id doesn't believe in modding.
      It's not like Bethesda controlled every bit of development. Just because one company owns another, doesn't mean the parent is directly involved.

      While it's certainly possible that id software would need Bethesda's blessing in order to release modding tools, I doubt they would say no. I think id is just choosing not to release modding tools, possibly to prevent console owners from getting shafted from the exclusivity of mod support on the PC.

    I think the way how they combined modern "standarts" and the essence of the old DOOM is just brilliant. I haven't even tried the multiplayer and I am not gonna try, but for all the young generation - run through the single campaign should be "MUST" option. The frame rate is always a solid 60fps, no screen tearing, it's never crashed on me, I haven't suffered any glitches, and overall it runs perfectly! Pretty much sums up my feelings. I tried some SnapMap stuff earlier today and it seemed a little basic to me. At least... what people have done so far with it. Most levels there feel like amateurish maps for Half Life 1. The lack of actual modding tools is definitely going to decrease the longevity of the game, unfortunately.
    But still... the single player is awesome and fun. Exactly what I need to fill the gap until Overwatch.

    What I hated most of Doom 3 was the fact that on hard, the demons were bullet sponges. I hate the fact that in a Doom game, I was trying to manage my ammo. And that duck tape was a mod not in the retail game. Too much dark, not enough frantic shooting.

    • @Lomaxxx53
      @Lomaxxx53 8 лет назад +1

      +Devenn Eng what do you mean? I always play on Ultra Violence and have lots of bullets for every gun.
      the only thing I managed was the cell ammo.

    • @buggsyspam
      @buggsyspam 8 лет назад

      Guys, that's not exactly what I mean. Original Doom was run-n-gun fun. Maybe you run out of shot gun ammo or rockets, but Doom 3 was more frustrating in that regard than it was scary/intense/challenging. Doom 3 made me start looking around corners and made me choose between a gun and a flashlight. It became fairly predicable. I guess I really didn't enjoy Doom 3 as a sequel and greatly look forward to this new Doom reboot.

    • @adambrown6669
      @adambrown6669 7 лет назад

      Doom 3 on consoles was arguably much better, you could have the flashlight on whilst using your gun, and the combat felt a little smoother and vastly more like a Doom game, not quite like the new one or the originals but still a very good game, with a menu theme that just screamed(literally) murderous metal joy.

    To me, the best thing for Doom 2016 is the snapmap mode, you can do so many things with it, you can build a level where you play as demons, or a Dark Souls level, or even a fully functional Tetris game.

    Just curious. Is there a reason you didn't mention the classic Doom maps that you can find in single player? I noticed most reviews skip over those, and being able to play those 16 bit maps with the high definition Doomguy was a great experience. It honestly bumped the game from a 9 to a 10 for me. (The cute little doomguy collectibles alone make it an 8)

    I did hope for Enemies already being placed in set locations here but it's actually a smart game design for Deum (Doom 2016), since the AI for the enemies are pretty robust, they have the ability to traverse the environments much like the Doomguy, and it would be pretty hard with having all the enemies placed already since that would consume a lot of CPU space.
    But still, i did enjoy this game and hopefully a sequel for this is on its way

  • @SRGIProductions

    Finally! You actually read my thoughts. I played this game on PS4, and I still LOVE this game. I don't have a powerful PC to run this game, and I have NO experience with the Nintendo Switch version, but ONE major gripe I have with the gameplay is that it's very stop and go to some degree. You move into an arena, area locks down, you fight the demons, and you move into the next area. Rinse and repeat. Graphics are DELICIOUS. Combat is AMAZING. But I would agree that the gameplay should've been more akin to the classic Doom games in terms of demon encounters.

    • @LGR
      @LGR  8 лет назад +7

      +Dirty Blue It also helps that when I played the original Doom I gave Zero shits about the story other than "Portals opened between Mars and its moons, Demons came out unexpectedly." I guess I played DOOM 1 at a pretty slow pace. I don't really remember it as super fast, though I usually only play episode 1 if I play it again. To me, this is another reboot that remembers the original differently than I do. I guess I took a lot of the old games too seriously and thought of them as attempting to be gritty and realistic instead of an over the top comic book style. (XCom for instance)

    • @jasonfenton8250
      @jasonfenton8250 5 лет назад +1

      Agreed. Doom, the original, is in large part an exploration game driven by mood lighting and atmospheric music. Yes, there was the thrash metal of E1M1, but there was a lot of moody ambient stuff in there, as well as jaunty orchestra and... jazz? Blues?
      Doom 2016 is based on Brutal Doom's interpretation of Doom, based on the old Doom comic. These three things made Doom's modern image wildly different than what Doom I and II actually were.

      And the devs specifically made the story not get in the way of the game play. They wanted gameplay and fun to come first. The story added in such a way that it didn't stop or break up the game play. Plus made so that the player could dive into the story if they wanted to on their own time.

I'll wait for it to go on sale and/or a price drop, but that's good to hear that the campaign is amazing. I'm not surprised about the online stuff being lackluster since the beta left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths, but hopefully the eventual modding community outside of SnapMap will fix that.

    Maybe it's just a weird quirk of how my brain works, but I honestly think I can credit the 'music' of the game for keeping me alive in the late game. I agree, it's a relentless barrage of chaotic noise that barely seems to count as music -- but from about the mid-point of the game onward, I barely seemed to notice it during the fights, only registering it when I watched back my recordings to take notes.
    I think what was happening was an effect similar to white noise: my parietal lobe was getting blasted by so much incoherent junk information from my auditory nerves that, after a while, it started tuning it out, only paying attention to any anomalies in the background noise that might signify something important; since it wasn't devoting as much cognitive real estate to _that,_ it could focus more on the information coming in from the optic nerves, processing the visual cues from the fight and improving the speed at which I could react.
    I dunno if anyone else had a similar experience, but that's the best explanation I could figure out for my own experience with _DOOM._
