The fact that "Practice Mode" is STILL a running gag after all these years makes me happier than it probably should.
I hear that voice whenever I see a practice mode
Now the exit bug from monster maker needs its return.
It must never die.
Free climb, baby.
what running gag?
i'v played all the primary doom games and never saw any practice mode or any joke on the matter, anyone care to enlighten me?
Note from the publisher: "Please, no footage of the Icon of sin, we will spoil it in our trailer ourselves."
Кирилл Котельников yeah it kind of ruined the surprise tbh. Wish they wouldnt of done that
I didn't even know what it was, so I was blindsided.
The longer the Icon of Sin is on Earth, the stronger he will become
Its theme from Doom II is playing right in the starting menu
It's funny that I never knew that the icon of sin is on the game, I rarely watched the trailers since it released.
I love how the Ballista turns the game to Heretic Eternal.
btw heretic / hexen sequels with id tech would be a great idea ..
@@fredpies That and a lovecraftian inspired Quake would be great
I never knew how much I wanted that until you just mentioned it...
@@fredpies Heretic and Hexen never were id games. They were made by Raven Software, who now are relegated to churning out CoD crap for Activision. So, extremely unlikely to happen, especially since the original team left to found the now defunct Human Head Studios.
@@mugwump7049 I know but they had used id tech
The love Clint has for this series is just about the most wholesome thing ever
and it's because of him that I know hold Doom with a similar reverence and respect
Ironic, in a sense.
“Your starting pistol is a shotgun”.Anybody else getting very pleasant Quake 1 flash backs?
G I A L L O hell yeah
absolutely
For I heard about, seems DooM Etermal already so "Quake-ly" enough with a lot of things like in Quake games...
@@PlayerLin That's what Doom is now, the gameplay of classic Quake but the iconic style and bravado of OG DOOM
@@mvnkycheez It makes sense when you think about. The first Quake was just an evolution of Doom's game mechanics. Makes sense that future doom games, barring doom 3, would borrow mechanics from it.
I feel like the 5-second "I got it running in 640x480 on a CRT" segment would've deserved its own video... right now it's a really intriguing teaser.
Something for LGR blerbs?
First he plugged a CRT into his computer, using an adaptor. Then he loaded up Doom Eternal and set the resolution to 640x480.

@@TheBig451 Okay, but how's the quality of the textures at that scale? How's the color? What all options were or weren't available at that resolution?
It totally deserves at least a good 3-5 minutes.
the way doom was meant to be played *cracks open monster*
Oh hell yeah. You're the person whose review I put the most weight in. With one foot in modern games, and the other in the classics, your glee at this game really says a lot. I'm glad they sent you a code, and also I want to say that this video is very high quality. Much appreciated!
I'd really like to see a co-op option available. In the classic games, It's a blast to turn up the difficulty and play with your friends through the campaign.
70 player coop ftw
How'd that work? So you're all on the same level together and can see each other playing? On 1993 Doom?
@@ians3801 Yeah, I did it that way with the classics on the Xbox 360. Split screen. It would have been better to do it over a LAN or online so we could each have a screen, but it was still bad ass.
@@SarahSchlongfeel I'm just trying to wrap my head around this... How was the game able to handle being cracked so that there are two players FPS'ing through the campaign's instead of one? Like how would the enemies react if they're just programmed to react to one player since it's a 1P campaign?
@@ians3801 probably the same way they react if you maneuver yourself so that they shoot each other, then turn on one another. Idk, it seemed to handle it very well. If only one of us entered tbe room, they would focus on that one. If another came into help, their attention would be split as they acquired a new target. I'm not a programmer so I have no idea how they did it. I wasn't aware that would have been a programming issue. I would have imagined it working seamlessly in realtime if you just put another player in.
Too poor to afford virtual demons, have to fight real life demons.

Hold on davinci :P
No shortage of real life demons nowadays. God be with you

Right there with you buddy. RIP and Tear
2:10 with the way the game starts my immediate thought is if there's a chainsaw hidden behind the player
Memories
HDTF joke?
@@MsQueenOfDance No, there is literally a chainsaw tucked away in a corner right behind the player in the first level of Doom II.
A chainsaw! Go find some meat!
Oh 100%, or some sort of secret.
As someone who played this through on a PS4 on Ultra Violence, I can say it's actually pretty doable with a controller. The trick is to turn off aim assist, up the sensitivity and use the slow motion rune to make up for the analogue sticks being harder to aim with when it comes to the weak points. It's all about getting used to the layout and having some practice.
I'm playing through nightmare at the moment on controller, and I find that it isn't that difficult to aim for weak points, so the time slow down rune is better to be replaced by something like the increased speed after glory kills or greater control in the air. The hardest thing is quick switching and master control.
Yeah u dont really need aa in this game the hurtboxes are very big for the most part
I like how the grapple brings YOU to the Enemy, hardcore.

So, the Quake route then.
2:27 That, hands down is my favourite part of the game.
The glory kill i mean. That one specific glory kill. What did you think it was?
That glory kill is just HILARIOUS in contrast to all the other gory and edgy kills, that one is just silly and i LOVE IT
My favorite part of this game - by FAR - is when I've killed two Titans in a mess of lasers and gore and then the game politely tells me there's a Buff Totem nearby.

Dude, if not you, then who else? In my eyes you are THE AUTHORITY in classic DOS games
Also Bethesda/ZeniMax tends to be a little freer for review copies to influencers than some other companies. This was made very evident when they gave Vinny/Vinesauce Skyrim on Switch even though he can be a real cynic sometimes.

Yes please.

I too would love to see this.
Totally, I'll post it on Twitter after the game's out
twitter.com/lazygamereviews
So, they went the Quake route with starter shotgun, nice.
The pistol in og Doom wasn't entirely useless, the first shot is 100% accurate, so you can use it to snipe enemies from very far away.
Nah, for all intents and purposes it _is_ useless the moment you find the chaingun, since that can be tap-fired with full accuracy as well. And if you absolutely can't afford to shoot the two bullets the chaingun fires with a single press of the fire button, your playing most likely isn't going too well.
Well most levels don’t give you the chain gun at the start. I think starting with a pistol is an easy way to integrate a sense of progression into a level.
I’m not saying it’s the best option however. Those classic doom levels that want you to take on 3 imps and 2 cacodemons with the pistol at the start? Fuck that
Every OG Doom pistol shot is accurate if you click fire button on each individual shot. It becomes inaccurate when you hold the fire button.
except the quake shotgun is every bit as terrible as the doom pistol
The Chaingun does tap aiming even better
I unironically love the plot of this game being:-
'Thats a dangerous thing, don't you do the dangerous thing doom guy'
'HA HA, DANGEROUS THING GO BOOOOOOOM'
I would reccomend paying attention to the tips on the demon types. They have some vulnerabilities that make them a ton easier to fight, but i never would have known they were there without the tutorial.

This game really paid homage to the original Doom series, I'm only halfway through the game and I'm noticing a lot of similarities that are great. Not to mention the replayability is there with those cheat codes because you can revisit your previously played maps with those cheat codes enabled, and have a blast, literally.
And that's another great thing, maps, each map has his own feel, it's not just one run on long game like Doom 2016 was.

If there ever is a new Duke Nukem game, I'll be waiting for your review.
I'm glad there's more of og Doom's dark, hellish, gory atmosphere, which is something I really missed in 2016. I mean 2016 was an awesome shooter, but without the walls of human skin and oceans of blood and all that good stuff it just didn't feel really, eh, doomy to me. This really feels like a next gen iteration of Doom 2, which is a good thing in my book.
I agreed. The pile of bodies in hell levels and the gore and meat walls of some levels really makes me feel like playing the classic Dooms with 2020 graphics. Now, only needs more creepie and hellish OST mixed with the present metal soundtacks
In retrospect, I think they played it safe for D16, to test the waters. Now that they feel confident in their success, they allowed themselves to go all out. It's so apparent in every aspect of the game, not just the graphics.
Decided to pre-order the deluxe edition on Steam yesterday. I loved DOOM (2016) and I’m confident Eternal will deliver on being one of the best FPS games in history

Whoa - whoa! Doom Eternal is out?! You can't just dump this on us, LGR! Let me finish my breakfast!
Edit: Heyy, I loved Doom 2016's pistol. I liked doing the alternate fire to get headshots, lol.
Early review copies.
The pistol was useless, it could have been. A good sidearm if it had a little more punch.
@@Thesavagesouls but the pistol was not useless at all, it was pretty much a mini sniper with full charge headshots almost 1 shotting most demons in the game + unlimited ammo. there are a lot of good doom players who beat nightmare pistol only in faster times then the average person using more powerful weapons. the only real downside of the pistol is that charge time really slows the combat feel and not fun in that regards
madrox8 if the charging was removed for a somewhat slower rate of fire, like a hand cannon, it would have been awesome
@@madrox8 If they gave it a heavy round skullcracker scoped upgrade instead of giving that to the heavy assault rifle, it would've been a great finisher for heavies & useful for picking off stacks of smaller enemies at a distance, kinda like the Halo 1 pistol, and useful throughout the whole game. It's not really consistent with Doom's gameplay though so I can kinda get why they didn't go there.
The charge time kept me from using it ever again. You could charge up headshots and take out heavies sure, but between the heavy assault rifle and the gauss rifle effectively filling that role already, and much faster, there was never any reason to do that.
8:15 That cut is absolute perfection in video editing.
Great! Thanks for the review! As usual very interesting story-telling!
I love simply and entertaining you word things :)
I'm not going to suggest what Doom "should" be as it's clear the devs and fans have decided this is what's right for the series, but I'm still disappointed as a fan of the classics, to see the direction it's taken.
Bigger arsenal, more customization and unlockables, a more expansive roster of baddies, so much of what these games are doing just makes sense. But that one line "even seeing a lone Pinkie demon, you know you're in trouble" - I think that says a lot for how removed this game is from the classic it takes inspiration from.
In Doom 1 and 2, enemies rarely pose much of a threat alone. If you have the space, the weaponry, and a bit of health, you can usually handle anything without a problem. An arachnotron will mulch you if you're not moving, but if you can continually circle around it in one direction or get behind cover it won't touch you. Homing rockets from Revenants will chunk away your health if you're distracted, but they can easily be sent into walls safely if you're paying attention. Zombiemen will chip your health down if they have the cover of more dangerous demons alongside them, but alone or at range, they barely stand a chance. Pinkies are almost completely irrelevant, until you disregard them long enough to get zoned out and forced into a bad position. Lost Souls are a joke until you're blasting big baddies with rockets and they come out of nowhere to get right in your face.
To me, the whole point was more to do with strategy than twitch reflexes. You needed to take account of your environment and all the baddies you're facing, or else you would quickly get overwhelmed. They were always predictable, always pretty easy to deal with on their own, but together in combination especially in tight quarters or in wide open spaces with no cover, they became a substantial obstacle to overcome.
Even though you could move really quickly, Doom never felt like a fast-paced game like the new Doom games are. And it was absolutely never a test of your quick reflexes or sharp aiming skills. It was a more methodical sort of action. I really appreciate that, and it's a kind of gameplay you don't see much in modern shooters. I honestly feel like Risk of Rain 2 has more in common gameplay-wise with the Doom I know and love than this was.
I think that's why there's still so much of a fanbase for the classics. They're dated, but even after decades of progress and innovation they're still unique in this landscape. It's just a bummer that these new Doom games aren't for me.
It's so cool to see such fanservice coming out in a big way and I really want to get into it, but when I felt so clumsy and awkward just trying to kill imps at close range with a shotgun on the lower difficulty setting in the first game, I knew immediately it wasn't going to be my kind of thing. It almost feels like there should be a 'slow the fuck down' mode or something, because this game actually does address a lot of the non-Doom-like design choices that turned me off even trying to push through with the first one.
This whole thing is 'old man mode' the comment, but I'm sticking to my guns. I like my old-fashioned giant hitboxes and slow projectiles, dammit!
My main gripe with what you said was
"Even though you could move really quickly, Doom never felt like a fast-paced game like the new Doom games are."
Doom has ABSOLUTELY (besides doom 3) always been a fast paced game.
If it wasnt fast paces for you, then i suppose you should go back and play on Ultra Violence, UV FAST or Nightmare.
If thats not your thing, they have "im too young to die" for you. Where you can creep around and twiddle your thumbs.
I say this as someone who owns a 5.25 copy of doom, v1.2 and v1.666 3.5'' floppies. Trust me, i love the classics as much as anyone.
The doom audience has grown up, evolved and gotten better. We are running sub 00:20 on e1m1 today. We're ready for more and Doom Eternal is giving us that.
@@ITRIEDEL Maybe fast-paced doesn't get the right point across. Like I said, you can move fast, and things definitely get hairy and you do have to make quick decisions, but what's expected out of you in terms of execution was always so much more manageable. I never felt like a monster was moving so quickly and erratically that I had to have great reflexes to beat it. In fact, I feel like anyone could get good enough to play on Ultra Violence because you learn the levels and strategize when and where to use the resources available to you. Enemies were predictable, both in terms of what shows up and where, and how they behave. You do have to react pretty quickly to enemy behaviors, like getting behind shelter when an Archvile starts lighting you up, or switching off rockets when a Lost Soul comes dashing toward you, but there's this feeling I get where any time I die I feel like that's my fault, or at least I should know better next time.
It's frustrating to have a normal-ass Imp bunny-hopping circles around me and shredding half my health bar and eating 7 shotgun shells before I finally take it down. It's like playing Overwatch - I'm just not a twitchy FPS headshots kind of guy.
@@MaskedMammal many oldhead gamers don't like the fast-paced fps gameplay for some reason. Huh.

Not going to lie, this video is the first one that's actually had me interested in Eternal. The trailers made it look like a really convoluted D16, and I still rather prefer Ultimate Doom over the 2016 release. Seeing how things like the extra lives, cosmetics, the cheat codes and such work really eased my worries. I might pick it up soon-ish? I don't have the money now but I'll see what my May/June/July looks like.
Solution to the fine-tuning problem of gamepads: motion controls, baby. They take a bit to get used to, but the slight adjustment that is allowed by slightly moving the game pad mimics mouse movement very well. It works really well for me, at least
who wants to shift their arms around constantly to fine tune a reticule?
I'd rather just... not play shooters at that point.
I grew up playing console shooters but at this point if I even try to play one with a controller my thumb joints get so stiff its not even worth it because I just die and die in situations that I know if I just had a mouse and keyboard I'd be fine.
Zeta Adonai I mean there’s a sweet spot for sensitivity (that’s different for everyone) that makes it as reactive as a mouse. And the other part to getting good is just getting used to using console controls. The other reason why I defend this point is there are people (like me lol) that don’t have computers that can run doom eternal. Don’t get me wrong, though, I’ve played doom 2016 and other shooters on my pc, and I still think that, if you get good enough with a game pad, you can perform just as well with that as with a keyboard and mouse.
@@switchprocontrollersplatoo7240 I get it, and yea you can get used to it. I was used to it when I played Goldeneye on N64, I was used to it when I played Halo 1-3 on xbox/xbox 360... Its just not worth it to me at my age having a decent computer... Well, it was more than decent in Doom 2016's day. Not sure what I could run Eternal at but I know I can. What I don't get are the people who are just freakishly adamant about controllers over mouse/kb ... If that's your jam, then that's your jam. I know there are many who always say m/kb is superior for shooters (myself included) but in my opinion that is an objective fact, not subjective. You can subjectively prefer controllers and adapt to them with minute finicking of deadzones and sensitivities (and motion controls?) but a mouse you just point and click. Sensitivity settings aside... its a lot more simple, intuitive, and straightforward than managing two analog sticks in tandem. There are genres I don't mind playing with controllers by any means, or that I even prefer controllers for or can go between. But shooters? I've tried lounging back and playing some with a controllers in recent years. Not even worth the time for me. Like I said, I'd rather wait till I can use a mouse and keyboard or not even bother.
Zeta Adonai I think that’s a pessimistic way of looking at it. If I want to play a game, I’ll play a game however I can, controller or not. And yeah, motion controls. Like I said before, tuning those motion controls to a good personal setting really lets you get the fine tuning that’s usually only possible on a mouse/keyboard setup. I know it’s made my shooter game a lot better in recent years on console, especially with doom 2016. Like, I’ve been doing better on console than when I played it on pc
@@switchprocontrollersplatoo7240 I said if that's your jam that's your jam. But you have to be null in the head to think that a controller is comparable to a mouse and keyboard for a FPS, at least not without extensive practice. I'm sorry if that sounds harsh, but c'mon! Really? Play how you want, have fun. That's what matters. I can't have fun with an FPS and a controller anymore, that's my personal stance. But as for the more effective control scheme (and no aim assist and other crap) a mouse and keyboard is the objective winner. Point and Click, vs fiddle fiddle fiddle.
Have fun, man. As long as you are and you don't mind a controller, then good for you.
Beautifully poetic and gorgeously reviewed. Awesome review LGR.
Nice review. I finished on ultra violence though I had to go down to hmp when marauder showed up for the first time. Also considered it when arch vile shows up for the first time but got through that eventually lol
Well it's a good thing I lived long enough to see 2 good modern doom games, here's hoping we see many more guys!
Here's hoping as long as they keep taking the time to make them incredibly good
love the platforming elements, looks really polished all-round, would've liked that aspect ot be a tad bit more punishing though
then agan, i loved really punishing hard platformers with quick respawn like super meat boy like the end is nigh a lot too.
Hell yeah, I always love it when they throw some good platforming into an fps 👍
I missed this - need more game reviews from you.
Great tips, looking forward to campaign tomorrow!
Sorry bro, when you said “This game f***** rules” i totally skipped everything you said and am now getting the game.
That's funny cause I just got my refund from Steam for this game. It's terrible and should never have been a game. It's a game for gamers who like a game who throw all elements of a game out the window for smooth gameplay. Music sucks, maxed out graphics leaves a lot to be desired (and it came out three days ago), boring and repetitive gameplay, and uninspiring "secret areas". Hopefully you liked it cause I'm pretty pissed off at the people who told me this would be enjoyable let alone the people who said this would be a must buy while I have off of work rn.
White-Van Helsing I own it and it’s just as bad. I’m stuck with that game unfortunately
@@grandchefauto8363 so im guessing you need to git gud
He prolly had reading sponsor written script , so don't get your hopes up
PDJazzHands u guesses wrong my guy. Maybe u need to play a good video game for once in ur life.
I don’t know why you’re the first Doom Eternal review I’m seeing but you are. Congratulations!
You've got me sold. I'm going to pre-purchase the deluxe edition tomorrow. Some of those perks seem well worth the extra $35 after taxes.
That Terminator 2 reference at the very end with the hand sinking in the lava ... 😍
I've always wondered why games would start your character off at level one instead of level 5 or something.
Progression is a lot more fun if you start off being an actual threat and get more badass from there, instead of spending minutes fighting rats with a wet noodle until you find a decent weapon.
Shotgun right from the start just makes sense.
i disagree, dying light is super fun early game when every single zombie is a massive threat, and all you have is a 2x4 to dish out violence
Even the rats of Doom Eternal are more strong than Doom 2016... when I start to play Eternal, when I see that early zombies, the first thing that I did was to punch him to make glow for the glory kill like in 2016 and don't waste bullets of shotgun in these weak enemies, but my punch didnt make nothing and the zombie attack me.
During my playtrough, I see that is more effective dash in the enemie than doing a normal punch
Then level 5 becomes default level 1.
If you start at level "5", then it is effectively level 1. Also some people enjoy the challenge and experiencing the evolution of a character from a slouch to a pro instead of running around a hero from birth. I find it harder to understand why everybody else(npc's) in a game sucks so bad if all you got to do is pick up da big guns or cast the super spell, since my character can do it from day one, why not them?
