Yup, no such thing as failure, just beautiful learning moments! I love how you saved what you could on the original piece but gave this whole trunk a new lease on life. Beautiful job, Sarah!

Painted pieces are always a mystery, you just never know what you are going to find under the paint. You worked with what you had and it turned out great!!

It does look much better than the brown. What you said at the end was wise and encouraging. Thank you.

Restore the top and place new veneer on the front. I will finish a second Lane chest in a row tomorrow. The first had sat in water and the legs and skirt were falling apart. It was made in 1944. The day I finished that chest my uncle gave me another lane chest. The veneer was missing from the lid and skirts. My uncle had put it in his yard on a broken pallet the legs were sitting in the soil. It was covered with an old tarp. When he mowed, he was blowing grass clipping under the tarp on the chest. The places where the veneer was missing had a green mold on the wood. It was full of ants and spiders snails crawling on it. My heart melted I thought it's beyond repair. I flipped it and seen it was made March 3rd 1925. 99 years old! I thought old fella I will try to save you. I was happy to see the wood under the mold was poplar. Cedar and poplar do not rot easy. I cleaned and sanded the wood put a fan on it 24/7. In my summertime hot shop dried the wood out well for a couple of weeks. The veneer on the body was perfect. It is rift cut white oak. I ordered new veneer Tighten all the loose joints. Had to cut off and replace the bottom one inch of one leg. I clear coat painted the underside to protect the chest in the future. Glued on the new veneer stained it. I want to add about 5 coats of wipe on poly. Tomorrow I will add two more coats. Tomorrow evening a super light sanding with 400 grit sanding sponge followed by a rub down with a rub down with high grade furniture wax. The old fella will be a gift to my wife and may it last well over 100 more years. May it honor the people who built it 99 years ago. Oh, both chests still have all of the original Lane paper tags hanging where they were placed at the factory when built.

I’m so glad you rescued that poor cedar chest! It looks so much better. It was never meant to be brown. The triangle of the original wood is a really nice touch, especially with that pretty blue.🌸

Much improved. You saved that ugly brown chest. I love Lane cedar chests but remember to change the lock or disable it.

It doesn’t have a key but if you push it in like button it unlocks

@@OurFurnitureFlippingAdventure, the problem with the old cedar chests is that they close without pushing the button and children have gotten locked inside. It slams shut on them and they can’t open from the inside. You can get free lock replacements so a child can’t accidentally lock themselves in playing hide and seek. There tragically have been deaths. They are airtight chests.

@@OurFurnitureFlippingAdventure As a seller, this is important to know. eBay won’t let you list a chest that hasn’t had the lock disabled. Even if you aren’t selling on that platform, it’s a good guide for what’s acceptable.

You could have made it look like an old-timey trunk by using Tweed or fake leather

How do you always wear such clothes and like good when you’re finished? I have paint all over me and y clothes

When I first started painting the only space I had to do it was my kitchen so I learned to be careful. Plus I have a few things that if you watch a lot of my videos you’ll see me wear often that are my dedicated painting clothes- plus chalk paint washes out pretty easily if you get right to it!
