If youre in Gwangju, you have to go to nearby Naju to try their famous pears and Gomtang (beef soup). Or you can visit 김강심 restaurant to try the bean porridge and noodles. The place is huge and constantly packed. You can order too if you're concerned about the virus. South Cholla-do has the best food of all of Korea.

Almost 40 years have passed since the Gwangju democratization movement began. But as Koreans,
hearing the name of Gwangju, we still have complicated feelings of sadness, sorry, pride...
At that time, I was a teen in Seoul. And the whole media just conveyed brief statements(not news) that it was a riot by a crazy mob. So the rest of the Koreans could not know the truth.
However, as we got to aware of the truth, we did not stop the resistance movement throughout the 1980s. And most of the young people, after they entered college, participated actively in demonstrations for democracy.
You can see us in the film '1987'- Cari already introduced(Korean films based on true events).
The people of Gwangju and Jeolla-province are like Irish people compared to western viewpoint.
This is because of the cunning discrimination policy that the ruling powers of that time subtly differentiated this region from the rest of Korea through separate governance.
It is not unrelated to this historical background that people in this region love art, have a high spirit of tolerance, and are very considerate to the weak.
Through this process, the universal values of democracy and human rights have thus established as the common values for all Koreans that cannot be reversed. Thanks to cari cakes for reminding me of the shouts of my youth.
**When you going to Damyang, don't forget to taste tteokgalbi(chopped seasoned beef rib steak)

As a Gwangju citizen, I really loved your content! And yes, my hometown has a very dark past. My grandmother convinced my grandfather and my three uncles to go to suncheon for a while just in case because the paratroopers were shooting people whom they suspect as a "communist rioter". There are people who still saying things like the list of people who have been rewarded for the uprising is fake, citizens of Gwangju and Jeolla province are communists...etc. But as long as we remember what really happened on May 1980, democracy shall prevail in the end.

I'm SO happy that you came to Gwangju! I live here and it's so disheartening to see it overlooked in favour of the other cities. It's so chill here, they take pride in being different. Some tips for those who might visit - Daein Market is better at night. Dongmyeongdong is the best area for cafes. Art Street and the Asia Culture Centre area is best at weekends. The ACC (before covid) usually has a tonne of performances or art markets.

As a non-Korean, when I hear Gwangju, it equals to me with the Gwangju Uprising. Thanks for sharing. 💕
Getting lost in a new city or new place is half as fun as getting to your actual destination. Well, just be sure you are in a safe area, otherwise, it would be a great nightmare. South Korea is relatively safe even at night. Just make sure you have money, phone for your google map, armed with important Korean words and you’ll all be good.

Great video! I’ve been living in Gwangju for almost 2 years now and it was pretty cool to see it through a traveler’s eyes instead. Might check out some of the cafes you went to! Gwangju doesn’t have as many foreigners as Seoul or Busan, but there is a pretty decent sized community of us here. If you’re looking for a city in Korea that’s not too big but still has a welcoming foreigner community it’s a good place to be 😊

It does get lonely I guess sometimes being in a place where you don’t really see anyone that looks like you, especially if you’re coming from a very diverse city but overall I enjoy living here and I’m glad I made the decision to. Wow! I'm so shocked you did this, I subscribed to your channel not to long before I moved to this city. I worked in Gwangju; I lived not far from the train station where you arrived in Seogu. I was there for two years and am moving to another city soon Gwangju doesn't get enough recognition especially it's history. Even when I go back to visit it feels like home, the people feel welcoming and I just know the vibe that I don't get when I go to Seoul or Busan. There is a sense of unification especially with what they went through which is also maybe why I hold it dear to my heart. Anyway, you really captured the beauty of Gwangju 💕 All the comments you said about the city and its people were spot on 😅💖 Hope you can go there again 🤗

"a little praise can even make a whale dance" i know that this is a saying in korea but i'm still excited seeing that lamp because it's also a lyric from bts' whalien 52 song, and it's j-hope's part whose hometown is, as a lot of people might already know, gwangju!

Hi Cari!!! I had a great time watching this. In fact, it got me interested in reading the book you mentioned, Human Acts. Added it to my list! Hopefully, I find myself a copy soon.
Also, it'd be great to know (maybe in your book vlog) books you've read and its connection/s to places you've been just like Human Acts and your trip to Gwangju. I find it enjoyable and it's a great way to know about books and places.
In short, I love your vlogs

Your videos are so wholesome and soulful that I almost always tear up somehow!! Sssoooo looking forward to the next viodeo, I have rewatched so many of your earlier videos, it gets weird when I wanna chill with your video rewatch. I absorb each video in the first time so second time feels unnecessary; even then I have rewatched almost half of your channel. So amazing filming and personality...Love ya . Keep doing the amazing job, makes me happy everytime...EVERYTIME...even just the notification!!! Thank You

Watching this in England's lockdown 3.0 and I miss travel so much. Even if I could just take the train to London ( 1 hour away from my home) I'd be so greatful. These blogs are giving my travel fix for now though. Your channel has been a favourite of mind recently helped me switch off from reality and remember what it used to be like aha xx

Randomly search some vlogs about Gwangju because I miss it so much and I find yours.
Been there like almost 4 years ago, stayed for a month during my summer internship program. And like you said, Gwangju is really a good place to chill. Can feel it right away when arrived there! The people are nice. Often greeted by the elders when I'm walking around. I miss strolling around the downtown, the art street, enjoying the park in ACC, even just walking around the campuss 😃
There's a famous bake shop in the downtown, Kungjeon Bakery, and their breads are delicious❤️
Thank you for making this video nicely! Wish I could visit Gwangju again one day~
