I have a soft spot for this movie because of it's anti-bullying message as it taught me to have courage and stand up to bullies when I was a child. In fact, when I was a kid, there was a bully in my block of townhouses that I lived in. I specifically remember my father telling me to *"man up"* and go fight that bully. He wouldn't let me in the house until I stood up to that bully. Low and behold, *Godzilla* made *Minya* stand-up to *Gabara* in the movie just like my father made me do. This gave me a relatability and appreciation for this film as a kid. From these fond memories, I'm able to overlook the obvious flaws of the production values of the film as a whole. For me, this goes beyond nostalgia. It hits me in a heartfelt way.

Fan base be damned! This movie is far from perfect, but I've always enjoyed it. And when I watched this as a kid, I could have cared less if it was stock footage. It showed Godzilla being a bad-ass again, and that is all I wanted to see!

Thanks for the review, TitanGoji! I appreciate how reasonable you were when it came to this movie. In recent years, I have heard some other fans defend this movie and elaborate on the points you mentioned in this video. I think the reason it's hated by a good portion of the Western fandom is due to the following reasons:
    1. The movie is part of the lighter tone era (though there are dark elements in the movie) and fans hate it, because they feel like it makes Godzilla more of a joke and "ruins" his reputation further in the minds of western audiences.
    2. Western fans are unaware of the state of the Japanese film industry and society at the time, and largely miss the context that would give them a better perspective.
    3. The English dub of the movie is pretty terrible. Heck, I think a good portion of the hatred towards Minya is due to this movie, and its terrible English dub. I think the hatred would be at least somewhat less if the English dub was better, but who knows for sure?
By the way I have a question for you. Does this movie take place in the real world where Godzilla and the other Toho kaiju are movie characters, or does it take place in the Showa universe where the kaiju actually exist as actual real life monsters? I heard from a fan who saw a version of All Monsters Attack with supposedly more accurate subtitles that towards the beginning of the movie when Ichiro talks about the sound that Minilla makes, his little friend says "How would you know? You've never even seen him." That feels like the kind of statement one would only make about a real-world phenomenon that he hasn't seen.
Some might say that the presence of a Godzilla action figure would indicate that this movie takes place in the real world, but Godzilla vs. Hedorah had some kaiju action figures in it as well, and that definitely takes place in a world where kaiju are real.

The very last Showa movie and Godzillas goes into hibernation.

I remember as a kid, a friend of mine told me about seeing this movie and since this was way before the internet or even VHS rentals, I thought he was lying. Imagine my surprise when finding out he had been telling me the truth.

Ngl, I saw this way before I saw Sea Monster, so I had no idea most of it was stock footage until way later.
Nevertheless, I would defiantly not consider this the worst Godzilla film, Honda did too good of a job on the human side for me to put it at that, but I do feel you're right about it not living up to its potential. Like I don't mind stock footage mostly, but I wish every fight leading up to Gabara had a purpose beyond just being fights, like if Minya learned some kind of moves or lesson from each fight and it all played a part in the finally, but it really feels like only the Gabara stuff was relevant at all.

While not my most favorite G flick. I'll be honest I think with some tweeking this could be a good film.
With Gabara you could have him be a legitimate threat. Maybe keep the bullying plot have it that Ichiro was pressured by the bullies in vandalizing a nearby shrine inturn freeing Gabara who is said to be an ancient one who rules through fear by feeding off of Ichiro's fears.
Gabara then makes his way to Monster Island and forces Ebirah, Kumonga and a group of Kamacuras by shocking them with his electric powers into his services to kill Godzilla and his son Minilla.
Have it that the more fear Ichiro (and to an extent Minilla) has the stronger Gabara becomes.
And it's only until Ichiro and Minilla stand up to their respective tormentors that Gabara gets on the receiving end of a Giant Green ass beating from the King of the Monsters. Both Minilla and Ichiro have new found confidence in themselves and go on with their lives.
