My god, I'm so glad I stumbled across these videos, I was spending hours looking for a good rigging tutorial that was neither too simple, too old, nor too hard to follow and this is just perfect!!!

i’m so glad to hear it!! I noticed too that there was a pretty big lack of tutorials/process videos and figured I’d try my hand at showing what i’ve learned ^^

0:00 Had to go and rewatch this several times, just to soak in all the useful info and also to fill this comment. After the first couple I caught myself thinking that your nice fancy animated intro could possibly have the bits with blank expanding color proceed faster into your logo animation. Making it really tight, and possibly placing it slightly back so that it plays after a 5-10 second summary of the video could help with viewer retention. I mention it just because I felt like I wanted to give something back since you're offering us this awesome look into your process.
0:09 I'm doing awesome! Thank you!
0:56 I think I'm beginning to understand what the "rig" will be in the end. Interesting how you included circle joints for particular tufts of fur, conceivably so that they can be rigged to move! so cool. Seems like you missed including joints for the syringes?
    2:04 pukes rainbows.
2:24 Yeah, head rigging sounds like the final boss if I think about it. See question b. Probably where the syringes would be to.
2:37 So you skipped over a whole thing with rigging the tail. See question c.
2:51 OSHA says you should bend at the knees, not the waist. He's gonna hurt his back! D:
3:20 Select by color? Moving pivots? *scribbles furiously in notebook* Quick! Write that down!
5:12 *note taking grinds to a stop* HowDareYou. mp3 I want the directors cut with included yapping! I joke but I wanna hear all about it in the future.
    5:18 consider my Mind blown
    7:09 Inception noise
9:19 It's composites all the way down, yup understood. XD
10:56 They missed a real opportunity to call pegs pins, because it seems so perfectly natural to sticks pins into all the different parts of the unholy voodoo doll puppet rigs I want to create.

    Questions
    a. Do you draw with stylus or mouse?
    b. Do you rig facial expressions/lip sync as well, or is that separate from the main puppet rig?
    c. Can you explain why you opted for a straight shape for the tail instead of following the drawing? What was your reasoning? Is it like a T-pose thing were we want a neutral pose?

thank you so much for your feedback!! I completely agree with the intro animation critique, I think I'll definitely do little summary bits at the very beginning future videos ^^
      To answer your Q's!
      a. I draw with a display tablet! I have a XP Pen display tablet, and I connect it to my laptop to use Toonboom, for all the little screenrecordings in this video I'm usually demoing with a mouse just because my set up is a little scuffed (My desk is next to the water heater/dryer in my house so I have to move my laptop elsewhere to do voiceovers ^^', moving my whole setup would be a little bit of a pain in that regard) There's definitely ways to draw with a mouse in toonboom! you'll just have to get a little creative with it (actually my professor PREFERRED to vector artwork with a mouse after sketching with a stylus, absolute wizard magic there)
      b. absolutely! Drawing all the mouth shapes and making the face expressable is a key aspect of a Puppet Rig, I'm definitely going to have a whole video dedicated just to rigging this puppets face. The process for this one is definitely going to be more on the experimental side,, so I'll also show the first puppet that I made! You're 100% right in pointing out that I didn't add joints for the swords! I definitely could have (probably should have ^^') but I know that they'll generally be pretty easy to just add in pivots for later (also a good little demo in how to add elements to your puppet later on!) really it comes down to how in depth you want to go with the minute details after you circle rig the main parts of the body
      c. You're right on the money with neutral posing! That was completely my bad when making the turnaround, ideally I should have made his tail sticking out straight for all of the poses, the short reasoning for that is because once I vector the artwork, I'll be putting in a curve deformer that's basically a "spine" for any given drawing. If I were to try and do that with a curved shape like I originally had it, it'd be much more of a pain.
I hope this helped answer your Q's!!

Absolutely unrelated to the video itself, but I just wanted to say you’re awesome. I discovered your animatics during a relatively tough time in my life, and perhaps because of this, they’ve become both a source of comfort and inspiration to me, so, thanks for doing what you’re doing.
While there may not be much of it on youtube, your stuff is really cool. Thank you for making these things, and you really are an inspiration

Been wanting to learn more about rigs so I’m glad I found these process videos. Also, I noticed that the rear legs on the back turnaround got mixed with the tufts of the front legs. Might’ve already noticed by now, not sure, but I wanted to let you know cause I didn’t want it to mess up your rig 😅Love the video.

Oooh this is great! I really want to start animating but i never saw any tutorials that were good in the rigging aspect. Btw, do you have any animation platforms you would reccomend for begginers?

great Q! For free softwares I've heard good things about Opentoonz and Krita. I also briefly used Pencil2D before I got Clip Studio Paint EX, and its pretty limited but it does its job.
If you're interested in Blender at all I'd definitely say check that out, free, powerful 3D and 2D software in the same bundle? hell yeah
really any program you get is only as useful as what you make of it >:3
