The relationship between Terry and Melanie was not shallow, but it was tragic. Melanie just wanted acceptance and unconditional love, two things she would never receive from her own family. She truly wanted to be with Terry, but her misguided loyalty to her family ultimately ruined it. At least she got a happy ending, finally walking away from her family for good and starting a new life. It is a shame that she was never able to reconcile with Terry. People always talk about Mel, but they never talk about Jack and how he endured most of the abuse from their father (mostly physical). The fact that Jack ultimately becomes the new king in the spin-off comics shows how toxic the walker family influence is. Melanie escaped from the shadow of the Royal Flush Gang, but Jack could not.
A side note but I love how Bruce shows a bit of humility when the obvious "told you so" moment came about at the end of Dead Man's Hand. Showing that even Bruce had his flaws and he knew about them. Loving certain criminals was something even the OG batman did from time to time.
It was a show of humility, and in my opinion, empathy. He's been down that road before so he knows it can hurt when your faith in a female criminal's potential reform is shattered. Given the (literal) father-son bond he and Terry share, the moment becomes a little nicer/bittersweet in retrospect.
Man when a lot of people talk about a character who barely appears in the show, but has left a huge impact on the show. I really hope we see more of Melanie
Well yeah since they both came from similar backgrounds as teenagers in dysfunctional environments been drawn (or forced in Melanie's case) to live a double life. Compare that to Selina who's cat fetish was more of a facade to justify her crimes and it's clear why Melanie is the better character.

@@The_Phantasm Well Bruce Timm, Paul Dini and co. were forced to work with the material they were given back in the early 90s when Warner Bros. was way more restrictive as to what they could do with the character compared to later times meaning Animated Selina was destined to be an underwhelming animated take on the character. Edit: I wrongly stated DCAU Catwoman was the _first_ animated adaptation of the character ever made only to find out she was predated by the The Adventures of Batman adaptation which came about a few decades prior. @@cian239 I've already answered this many times but since you're curious here's the reason. As much as I love BTAS, I have never really cared for their version of Catwoman. It never felt like they got her personality right and while Adrienne Barbeau did do a good job, her portrayal doesn't really come to mind when I think of the definitive Catwoman portrayals. Her criminal activities were too toned down significantly and focused too heavily on the wrong aspects of Catwoman’s character which was her ecological agenda and her obsession with protecting wildlife habitats. We didn't get enough of the iconic “cat-burglar” aspect of the character. Catwoman’s supposed to be fun and flirty and energetic with a slightly skewed moral compass. In addition to that, I really didn't like the part of her being attracted to Batman but not Bruce Wayne because quite frankly even much earlier on the comic Selina always was interested in both Bruce and Batman. The blonde hair I understand was a studio mandate so she would look more like Michelle Pfeiffer similar with Penguin until TNBA where they were allowed to give them more comic accurate designs but for me I don't really like Catwoman with blonde hair except when she is being played by Michelle Pfeiffer.. Really glad it was retconed that she was just using blonde hair dye. I always thought that Adrienne Barbeau's voice and performance, while valid, sounded a bit too mature for the character and I felt like she was just missing the playful sass, sarcasm and overconfidence that Catwoman was known for. I think her characterization and Adrienne Barbeau's performance was more refined by the last season and also in TNBA. It's a bit unfortunate that my favourite appearance of Catwoman in the DCAU is the short film "Chase Me" in which the characters never speak. Like I said, I think Adrienne Barbeau did a really good job but unfortunately I didn't think that she and Kevin Conroy had amazing chemistry, especially compared to his phenomenal chemistry with Dana Delany as Andrea Beaumont, Helen Slater and Olivia Hussey as Talia al Ghul, Susan Eisenberg as Wonder Woman or Grey DeLisle who voiced Catwoman in the Arkham and Injustice games. Adrienne Barbeau was just never really the voice I imagined for Catwoman when I read comics. When I think of Catwoman voices my brain usually goes to Grey DeLisle from the Arkham games, Gina Gershon from The Batman 2004 series and Laura Bailey from the Batman Telltale games.
I honestly feel like Melanie should've been Terry's love interest because of how similar they are to each other both came from dysfunctional families, Melanie coming from a family of criminals and Terry being a juvenile delinquent, and both are trying to find retribution by becoming heroes and not to mention that Terry has far better chemistry with Melanie than he does with Dana.

I always liked Melanie, she’s a complex character with a complete and believable character arc. I really wish she would’ve been Terry’s permanent love interest.
Something that always stuck with me was how toxic both of Melanie's parents are. The dad is obviously abusive and controlling but Queen is just as bad but is more subtle about it. She approaches her daughter with open arms and listens to her problem but tells her to forget about it since a career criminal needs to be her husband. This is so callous and manipulative. No mother should want her kid to marry a professional crook.

I also didn't realize that the JL royal flush gang was connected to the batman beyond. Really makes me appreciate the DC animated universe.
IIRC when Amanda Waller is telling Terry the story; she says something about "the fourth or fifth group, who can keep track" -- so it's wholly possible that the Walkers/Spades of BB are an off shoot/merger of Past Factions (as hypothesized) ... it was expressly cited that the Queen of Terry's era was the daughter of the Past King; and no doubt put in some time as his 10.. but one must also account for her down time to Birth and raise "Jack" & Melanie; and which groups likely used the 'branding' during that down time; and/or who function as Jack & Ten until the walker Children came of age to say nothing of who/how the Role of Ace was filled before robotics technology became viable gang muscle and without access to a Reality warping meta human
I'm glad so many people voted for Melanie/Ten. I found her to be an intriguing character for the reasons you mentioned, though I'm more with Connor when it comes to her relationship with Terry. Maybe it's because Terry's relationship with Dana always seemed kind of meh to me (and her character never seemed that developed) and there was some excitement when Melanie came into the picture, albeit briefly. I'm not familiar with the comics you covered, but I'm interested in checking those out now.

@@SerumLake this is completely off topic but in their debut episode the leader of the royal flush gang, King, is voiced by none other than George Lazenby, the second James Bond, so if you pay attention to the small details you'll see that the former King of the gang bears a remarkable resemblance to none other than Sean Connery.
A great credit to Bruce Tim, his animated version of Melanie looks 1000x better than any of the comic versions you've shown. His talent for drawing pin up girls is second to none (which he often did in his spare time).
So, I don't know if you take suggestions, but on the offchance you do: I'd like to see an entry on the DCAU version of Lois Lane. She seems to get lost in the shuffle when people discuss the animated series, and I'd argue that the DCAU take on the character is just as iconic and or definitive as their more celebrated takes on "The Joker", "Batman" and "Mister Freeze". Especially when you consider the other films and TV shows have really struggled with their depictions of her.
Kind of sad Jack went back into the fold. Heh, “fold.” Melanie I feel succeeded in getting out and trying to lead a simpler life. And even got her brother out too. But that wasn’t the case. She did deserve at the very least not to be screwed over by her family. Time after time after time.
Glad I'm not the only one who wanted Melanie to become a sidekick to Terry, but she'd have to want it first. She's never had a chance to decide for herself what she wants to be- just what she doesn't. Maybe she doesn't want any part of the costumed life at all any more, but perhaps learning the truth about Terry might change that stance.
Okay, I have to say this because I feel like it is hard to ignore: Melanie has this tendency to lean against large, upright objects and some rather... provocative movements. I mean, the conversation she has with Terry has her almost pole-dancing on that streetlight. It is extremely difficult to ignore once you notice it. I'm amazed it made it past the censors, given that she's underage.
Is she underage? Terry is 17 in Episode 1 of Beyond and I assume he ages at some point during the shows run. When Melanie tries to get back into the Royal Flush gang in the comics she specifically says she needs the money to pay for college, those comics might not be canon though.
I noticed that too in this video, that she does alot of bending over and "positional" poses. Any guy with teen hormones firing off all cylinders would have gotten pulled in by her, lol
More should have been done with Terry cheating on Dana. Tbh she's not much of a character and Terry never gets any consequences for betraying her. Max barely even brings it up and that's it
Dana represents normalcy for Terry's hectic and chaotic life which is why she was chosen as his defacto love interest by simply been a regular girl whom Terry could enjoy a normal happy life devoid of all the stresses been Batman Beyond brings.

I mean, realistically, she'd probably end up being Terry's mistress. When I was married, I kind of stopped caring about being faithful to my wife after our compatibility faded away and I caught feelings for my boss. We managed to carry on our affair for 6 years before we got caught.
I like Melanie because she’s one of the very few female characters who other than Danna was another option for Terry. Terry didn’t get a lot of dating options other than Danna, so it was nice to see him widening his dating choices. Also Melanie is a better person than most of her family as whilst it was wrong to steal that money, she stole it to save her family and she was supportive of Jack when he tired to reform.
Great character. Complex, likeable, relatable, good chemistry with Terry, cool, Catwoman-esque but original, easy to empathize with and ultimately inspirational. Olivia d'Abo was marvelous, too. Thank God Andrea Romano brought her back as Star Sapphire and Morgaine le Fey. Really loving your work.
What I've always found intriguing about the Royal Flush Gang Mr Walker and Mrs Walker Are the only villains that we know of that would have faced off against Bruce when he wore the Batman beyond suit before his retirement, And he's also responsible for busting up the non-metihuman royal flush gang.
Melanie suffered from the fact her general storyline was really wrapped up after two episodes. She wanted to escape a life of crime, and then she escaped a life of crime. Unlike Selena who couldn't help herself and seemed to always wanted to continue being Catwoman, the thrill of the hunt (especially in later series), Melanie had no reason to return to crime aside from the one time when she thought it was for her family. The Royal Flush gang did give us one line from the DCAU from Amanda Waller that always got a chuckle out of me: "The second group to call themselves the Royal Flush Gang ... or the third ... who can keep it all straight?"
I know this will be off topic, but given the focus on BATMAN BEYOND, I just wanted to vent a minor wish that I had regarding the series. Given that the BTAS continuity would show up from time to time on BB, I always wanted a scene early on where Terry goes into the Batcave and finds Bruce Wayne watching an old news video. TERRY: Hmmmm. I see you're spying on me. BRUCE: How'd you figure that? TERRY: The computer screens got multiple footage of my school. BRUCE: Finding out about the school district you're in sent me back to memory lane. You're familiar with your High School's namesake? TERRY: Oh yeah! Hamilton Hill. Wasn't he Mayor of Gotham back in your Batman days? BRUCE: That's right. Can't even begin to tell you how many times I saved his life. And his. Bruce points to a still photo of a ribbon cutting ceremony. It was from the day H.H. High School officialy began construction. TERRY: The blond guy holding the ceremonial scissors? Who was he? BRUCE: That's Jordan Hill, son of Hamilton Hill. TERRY: Funny, I remember watching the news with my father once. They ran that same photo of the groundbreaking ceremony. Never made the father-son connection at the time. One of the few good moments I remember sharing with my Dad.❤

Personally I thought Melanie and Terry had better chemistry together than Terry and Dana. While the relationship isn’t deep Dana isn’t that interesting a character to me while is justifiably annoyed and angry with Terry(given she doesn’t know everything Terry does).
Thanks to heroclix, which released a prize kit featuring these guys, I learned that Queen actually has a name: Donna. You can hear King call her that at the end of the season 3 episode when they fight

As to the video, I'm glad the character was writen well, she could have been a shallow character with bad stereotyping (daddy doesnt love me, let me throw myself at the 1st guy I see!🤮🤮🤮), instead working to get out and looking for someone stable (and in the comics trying to help another family member get out). I think it works. Good superhero storytelling has room for healthy people, even in the Batman universe.
Melanie Walker for me was Batman Beyond's answer to Catwoman, the long blonde hair, the cat like blue eyes, the soft spoken voice and her whole mysterious aura, it really made her feel like she was Terry's "Selina Kyle" She was an interesting character but the whole relationship kind of felt rushed compared to Bruce and Selina's which was much more fleshed out. I think if the show continued, it would have been cool to see her become Batgirl Beyond as i think there was hope for her to redeem herself. I loved the ending of Dead Man's Hand when Terry asked Bruce has this sort of thing ever happened to you before? And Bruce responds with a warm smile and says "let me tell you about a woman named Selina Kyle" was a cool way for the show to address the similarites between the past and present relationships.
I can see why people wanted Terry and Melanie to be together. They actually had some nice chemistry with each other. I really wish we saw more if her in the Beyond show.

Sure, but the numeric cards are generally viewed as less valuable than the face cards (even though they’re all worth 10, except for the ace… I think there’s something to be said about that)
So popular they broke Terry and Dana up in the Batman Beyond Rebirth comic series so they can be a couple and I can't blame them. Dana was just kinda there, exist purely to be his normal girlfriend. She didn't get much focus outside of that Rat episode which Terry would have done that for any girl in danger. Besides, its nice that unlike Bruce and Selina, their relationship eventually succeeded at least in that series.

The idea of the RFG having twin blood relations just felt too far fetched, even for a Gravity Falls/The Prestige fan like me. 8:19: They sure look like Marvel villains, ain't they? Am still surprised "Once Burned" wasn't lambasted if not censored for having hints of a one-night friends-with-benefits stand. Same almost goes for the end of the aforementioned "Wild Cards". 10:28: Now this comic can easily fit in the canon, although the disappointment pertaining to Jack's chances are immense. Denied redemption is a sore point for superheroics and paragonism. 11:44: I actually like this. Makes the kid have more valuable screentime while having the chance to be an ensemble darkhorse; think Pop Harukaze and Hana-chan from Ojamajo Doremi. 11:46: I would prefer someone not related to the Bat-Family to be Batgirl Beyond, as long as she's not Maxine Gibson. She's good at being an Oracle-esque, but she's not a fighter. 12:12: This is not an anime! 12:55: Did not expect this. Well, hope she'll get her adaptation bad***ery dues post-DCAU.
I hate to contradict you but I remember seeing The Royal Flush Gang in an old rerun episode of The Super Power Team Galactic Guardians before so they've been on TV way before Batman Beyond

It never really made sense to me that we didn't have a Scarecrow beyond. Of all the things that could have potentially made it into the future Batman stories, Crane's fear toxin seemed like an easy choice. Especially after they did Bane and Venom. I know they tried to avoid rehashing old Batman characters in Batman Beyond but it's surprising.

A lot of Melanie fans in the comments. I have to say, she was more interesting than Dana, who gave off generic girlfriend vibes. As for Melanie, one thing that stuck out was how much she wasn't Catwoman. Catwoman commited crimes out of boredom or greed (nice things do cost money), while Melanie's misdeeds were born out of a messed up sense of family honor.

@@cian239 I've already answered this many times but since you're curious here's the reason.
As much as I love BTAS, I have never really cared for their version of Catwoman. It never felt like they got her personality right and while Adrienne Barbeau did do a good job, her portrayal doesn't really come to mind when I think of the definitive Catwoman portrayals. Her criminal activities were too toned down significantly and focused too heavily on the wrong aspects of Catwoman’s character which was her ecological agenda and her obsession with protecting wildlife habitats. We didn't get enough of the iconic “cat-burglar” aspect of the character. Catwoman’s supposed to be fun and flirty and energetic with a slightly skewed moral compass. In addition to that, I really didn't like the part of her being attracted to Batman but not Bruce Wayne because quite frankly even much earlier on the comic Selina always was interested in both Bruce and Batman. The blonde hair I understand was a studio mandate so she would look more like Michelle Pfeiffer similar with Penguin until TNBA where they were allowed to give them more comic accurate designs but for me I don't really like Catwoman with blonde hair except when she is being played by Michelle Pfeiffer.. Really glad it was retconed that she was just using blonde hair dye. I always thought that Adrienne Barbeau's voice and performance, while valid, sounded a bit too mature for the character and I felt like she was just missing the playful sass, sarcasm and overconfidence that Catwoman was known for. I think her characterization and Adrienne Barbeau's performance was more refined by the last season and also in TNBA. It's a bit unfortunate that my favourite appearance of Catwoman in the DCAU is the short film "Chase Me" in which the characters never speak. Like I said, I think Adrienne Barbeau did a really good job but unfortunately I didn't think that she and Kevin Conroy had amazing chemistry, especially compared to his phenomenal chemistry with Dana Delany as Andrea Beaumont, Helen Slater and Olivia Hussey as Talia al Ghul, Susan Eisenberg as Wonder Woman or Grey DeLisle who voiced Catwoman in the Arkham and Injustice games. Adrienne Barbeau was just never really the voice I imagined for Catwoman when I read comics. When I think of Catwoman voices my brain usually goes to Grey DeLisle from the Arkham games, Gina Gershon from The Batman 2004 series and Laura Bailey from the Batman Telltale games.
I honestly feel like Melanie should've been Terry's love interest because of how similar they are to each other both came from dysfunctional families, Melanie coming from a family of criminals and Terry being a juvenile delinquent, and both are trying to find retribution by becoming heroes and not to mention that Terry has far better chemistry with Melanie than he does with Dana.

The problem with Dana is they didn't give her anything to do other than being Terry's girlfriend who got kidnapped every so often.

Maybe it could've been about Terry and Dana going out on a date and they come across the Jokerz and they kidnapped them and hold them for ransom Terry and Dana half to work together to figure out way to defeat the Jokerz.
I always liked Melanie, she’s a complex character with a complete and believable character arc. I really wish she would’ve been Terry’s permanent love interest.

Something that always stuck with me was how toxic both of Melanie's parents are. The dad is obviously abusive and controlling but Queen is just as bad but is more subtle about it. She approaches her daughter with open arms and listens to her problem but tells her to forget about it since a career criminal needs to be her husband. This is so callous and manipulative. No mother should want her kid to marry a professional crook.

I'm glad so many people voted for Melanie/Ten. I found her to be an intriguing character for the reasons you mentioned, though I'm more with Connor when it comes to her relationship with Terry. Maybe it's because Terry's relationship with Dana always seemed kind of meh to me (and her character never seemed that developed) and there was some excitement when Melanie came into the picture, albeit briefly.
I'm not familiar with the comics you covered, but I'm interested in checking those out now.

A great credit to Bruce Tim, his animated version of Melanie looks 1000x better than any of the comic versions you've shown. His talent for drawing pin up girls is second to none (which he often did in his spare time).
I want to say how fun the vote was! 🤩 I personally voted for Shriek, but 10 deserves it.
So, I don't know if you take suggestions, but on the offchance you do: I'd like to see an entry on the DCAU version of Lois Lane. She seems to get lost in the shuffle when people discuss the animated series, and I'd argue that the DCAU take on the character is just as iconic and or definitive as their more celebrated takes on "The Joker", "Batman" and "Mister Freeze". Especially when you consider the other films and TV shows have really struggled with their depictions of her.

Kind of sad Jack went back into the fold. Heh, “fold.” Melanie I feel succeeded in getting out and trying to lead a simpler life. And even got her brother out too. But that wasn’t the case. She did deserve at the very least not to be screwed over by her family. Time after time after time.
Glad I'm not the only one who wanted Melanie to become a sidekick to Terry, but she'd have to want it first. She's never had a chance to decide for herself what she wants to be- just what she doesn't. Maybe she doesn't want any part of the costumed life at all any more, but perhaps learning the truth about Terry might change that stance.

Okay, I have to say this because I feel like it is hard to ignore: Melanie has this tendency to lean against large, upright objects and some rather... provocative movements. I mean, the conversation she has with Terry has her almost pole-dancing on that streetlight. It is extremely difficult to ignore once you notice it. I'm amazed it made it past the censors, given that she's underage.
Is she underage? Terry is 17 in Episode 1 of Beyond and I assume he ages at some point during the shows run.
When Melanie tries to get back into the Royal Flush gang in the comics she specifically says she needs the money to pay for college, those comics might not be canon though.

I mean, realistically, she'd probably end up being Terry's mistress. When I was married, I kind of stopped caring about being faithful to my wife after our compatibility faded away and I caught feelings for my boss. We managed to carry on our affair for 6 years before we got caught.
I like Melanie because she’s one of the very few female characters who other than Danna was another option for Terry. Terry didn’t get a lot of dating options other than Danna, so it was nice to see him widening his dating choices. Also Melanie is a better person than most of her family as whilst it was wrong to steal that money, she stole it to save her family and she was supportive of Jack when he tired to reform.
Great character. Complex, likeable, relatable, good chemistry with Terry, cool, Catwoman-esque but original, easy to empathize with and ultimately inspirational. Olivia d'Abo was marvelous, too. Thank God Andrea Romano brought her back as Star Sapphire and Morgaine le Fey. Really loving your work.
What I've always found intriguing about the Royal Flush Gang Mr Walker and Mrs Walker Are the only villains that we know of that would have faced off against Bruce when he wore the Batman beyond suit before his retirement, And he's also responsible for busting up the non-metihuman royal flush gang.
Melanie suffered from the fact her general storyline was really wrapped up after two episodes. She wanted to escape a life of crime, and then she escaped a life of crime. Unlike Selena who couldn't help herself and seemed to always wanted to continue being Catwoman, the thrill of the hunt (especially in later series), Melanie had no reason to return to crime aside from the one time when she thought it was for her family.
The Royal Flush gang did give us one line from the DCAU from Amanda Waller that always got a chuckle out of me: "The second group to call themselves the Royal Flush Gang ... or the third ... who can keep it all straight?"
I know this will be off topic, but given the focus on BATMAN BEYOND, I just wanted to vent a minor wish that I had regarding the series.
Given that the BTAS continuity would show up from time to time on BB, I always wanted a scene early on where Terry goes into the Batcave and finds Bruce Wayne watching an old news video.
TERRY: Hmmmm. I see you're spying on me.

TERRY: The computer screens got multiple footage of my school.

Let's be real. Everyone liked Melanie because she A) was a better Catwoman than most depictions of Catwoman, and B) the character designers knocked her design out of the park. Melanie may be good at heart, but she was drawn like the baddie that stole mine. 13/10 Makes me wish I was Terry

Personally I thought Melanie and Terry had better chemistry together than Terry and Dana. While the relationship isn’t deep Dana isn’t that interesting a character to me while is justifiably annoyed and angry with Terry(given she doesn’t know everything Terry does).

As to the video, I'm glad the character was writen well, she could have been a shallow character with bad stereotyping (daddy doesnt love me, let me throw myself at the 1st guy I see!🤮🤮🤮), instead working to get out and looking for someone stable (and in the comics trying to help another family member get out). I think it works. Good superhero storytelling has room for healthy people, even in the Batman universe.

Melanie Walker for me was Batman Beyond's answer to Catwoman, the long blonde hair, the cat like blue eyes, the soft spoken voice and her whole mysterious aura, it really made her feel like she was Terry's "Selina Kyle" She was an interesting character but the whole relationship kind of felt rushed compared to Bruce and Selina's which was much more fleshed out. I think if the show continued, it would have been cool to see her become Batgirl Beyond as i think there was hope for her to redeem herself. I loved the ending of Dead Man's Hand when Terry asked Bruce has this sort of thing ever happened to you before? And Bruce responds with a warm smile and says "let me tell you about a woman named Selina Kyle" was a cool way for the show to address the similarites between the past and present relationships.

So popular they broke Terry and Dana up in the Batman Beyond Rebirth comic series so they can be a couple and I can't blame them. Dana was just kinda there, exist purely to be his normal girlfriend. She didn't get much focus outside of that Rat episode which Terry would have done that for any girl in danger. Besides, its nice that unlike Bruce and Selina, their relationship eventually succeeded at least in that series.
Looking at it now, Melanie's outfit gave off what she was feeling where her family accepted their looks in their outfits.

11:46: I would prefer someone not related to the Bat-Family to be Batgirl Beyond, as long as she's not Maxine Gibson. She's good at being an Oracle-esque, but she's not a fighter.

It never really made sense to me that we didn't have a Scarecrow beyond. Of all the things that could have potentially made it into the future Batman stories, Crane's fear toxin seemed like an easy choice. Especially after they did Bane and Venom. I know they tried to avoid rehashing old Batman characters in Batman Beyond but it's surprising.
I think Spellbinder is meant to fill Scarecrow's hole
He is a better choice to fit the "techno" aesthetic and the world of Beyond

A lot of Melanie fans in the comments. I have to say, she was more interesting than Dana, who gave off generic girlfriend vibes.
As for Melanie, one thing that stuck out was how much she wasn't Catwoman. Catwoman commited crimes out of boredom or greed (nice things do cost money), while Melanie's misdeeds were born out of a messed up sense of family honor.
Can't say I'd be opposed to her becoming Batwoman Beyond.
To be honest, I wish that Terry had ended up with Melanie. She was just so much more interesting than Dana and her & Terry just seemed to have more in common
