How do you look after your feet?
Moisturizer, wash, air out
Trying to deal with cuboide problem.
I wear Injinji toe socks for every run and have never had a blister - bar one run about 2 years ago when i didnt wear them
Soap, water and allow to dry after that. I avoid athlete foot at all costs. I have to say, I find moisturing my feet really uncomfortable.
Avoid verrucae like the plague. And plantar fasciastis is no fun so I roll the soles of my feet regularly with a spiky ball.
As a podiatrist absolutely love this video! However a couple of things I'd like to add, with the tip of vaseline/chafing cream on hot spots this may increase likelihood of blisters on longer runs because the cream will dry out the skin after it's been used. So for shorter runs it can be great to increase glide/reduce friction but after while it will dry out and your skin will not glide as good as it normally would. In the case of blisters, leave them and don't pop if possible as popping will create a portal for infection and could make the area worse. With the method you used that doesn't work for you, the way you showed would indeed make it worse as the gauze/padded part of the bandaid will actually move on top of the blister when walking/running so will increase the friction and hence make it worse. The best thing to do if you have a bad blister is to buy the blister patches, apply to the area and leave for 2-3 days and then remove it . Hope this helps!
I should have watched this video BEFORE having gone for a run
Tell me about it 😂
Same!
You just don’t know until you know 😩

Left my baby toe nails many miles ago. When I'm painting my nails I put a little dab on the toe top just to be consistent with the rest of the nails
Sorry to hear that, but great sense of humour about it :)
I learned about 7 years ago the importance of sock wear and footwear. I also learned the importance of wearing shoes that are big enough.... Thanks
I used to get alot of blisters but switched to double layered sock about 10 years ago and haven't had any since. (hilly and 1000mile are the ones i've used but I'm sure they'll be other brands out there). Essentially a lycra'esque internal layer stays tight to your foot and a more standard material (with padding as mentioned) on the outer layer so they move against each other not your skin. There can be issues getting them on though as the layers don't always align out of the washing machine so they could slow down your transition ;) Mine is already so pedestrian it wasn't a concern.
That's a good tip thanks Pawle!
Fit of the shoe/sock choice are very important
What should we consider when we picking shoes or socks
Could GTN do something about the different aspects of training and building an aerobic base and why it is important
For sure, good idea David we'll see what we can do
properly "popping" a blister is called lancing. and what you described is the best way, sterile needle to lance, let out the fluid and then let it dry, protect from further friction.
Compeed blister pads are by far the best imo if you have a heel blister. 👍🏻
If its something you get often I cannot recommend Engo patches enough they work miracles!
A podiatrist once told me that one way of avoiding blisters is to dry the skin on your feet by applying hand sanitiser (with Vit E) to your feet before bed time, every night, for a few weeks. It should toughen up the skin, and in return help you avoid blisters. Worked for me, I hope it works for others.
I think it's the solvent in it, we used to put surgical spirit and hand cream to toughen up our hands for bars when I was a gymnast and what you're saying sounds like the same thing. 👍
Thank you for shedding some much needed light on why one my toe nails has turned black after running. Had no idea that this could happen.
good video GTN, thanks
Feet; generally the most overlooked area Triathletes do not spend enough time on!
Yes, every coach emphasises the importance of running shoe fit. yet, do not forget that before a triathlete gets to run, they spend, especially for the longer 70.3 + distance events a fair amount of time with their feet basically locked in the one position on the bike, so it should be more about bike AND shoe fit.
Tip of the day: When racing; do not wear freshly laundered socks (you will find you will blister less if your socks have been worn for a couple of hours before wearing in a race.)
CoachW
Wow that's exactly the type of information I was looking for !! Bless you !!
I wish I would’ve thought about this before I came home with a foot full of blisters
What the hell ! Today i was feeling stiffness underneath my feet and suddenly this video popped up in my recommendations !
Spooky Saad, hope it has helped you out
Idk what it is but this happens to me all the time! I'm thinking about a certain topic and then GTN magically posts a video about it!
I run in Injinji toe socks, never had a blister with them. Although I do get funny looks with toe socks. I'm currently feeling the wrath of the dreaded black nail after doing a stupidly long hike. Sucks so bad
How can you get funny looks ? You run without your shoes on ?
It took me a while to find shoes that were comfortable and had a good fit. Great tips. Thanks for such great content
As a runner i have become highly paranoid about hurting my feet. In the summer i literally live in my Birkenstocks but i'm so scared of banging / scraping my toes. Same goes at the beach where i'm highly careful where i walk. My feet are so precious. Anything that can stop me from running is my worst nightmare !
Do you use barefoot shoes? Because if you are so careful you should. You need to mid foot strike but then it only has pros. (Heel striking is trash anyway) so that your foot can keep/ return to its natural state.
In ultras I learnt to pop it (as Mark said a medic will always ays tell you not to)with a sterilized needle and leave a thread through it so it drains nicely, proper bandaid on and you can easily keep on running.
Great video! Just some questions, and also some comments. Due to me getting blisters on long runs, body glide never worked so what I use is Kinselogy tape on the hot spots. It doesn't fall off when sweating, and can really mold well to the shape and curves of my feet. As for questions, what really is your lacing "technique" as for tightness and the importance of the runner's loop at the top? And as for socks, the cushioning (ultra light, light, full), when should one be applied over the other? Is it based on outside temperature, distance of run? I don't think I am wearing the correct sock cushioning. Thanks!!
Currently suffering from Morton’s neuroma. Any tips for treatment without getting cortisone shots or surgery?
How long have you had it for? I'm a physiotherapist, I'd love to help!
@@triphysio9603 I have the same, and have for several years. Very painful, and I don’t want surgery, only as a last resort. Any advice would be great!
Also try to wear socks marked for left or right foot as this means less excess/flappy sock around the little toe to rub as they are tapered to account for toe length. Furthermore if you are a diabetic runner then watch this video at least several times and heed the advice as the nerves in your feet/toes will not warn you of any problems (diabetic neuropathy).
Good advice David :)
Very helpful many thanks
I actually got blue toe tip from extensive running. Toenail is all good.
Those are some clean shaven legs!!! More aero!
do running socks really make a huge difference? i only really run around 5-7km 3 times a week and so far i've always used normal cotton socks.
Excellent content btw. I like also the accent, especially the Scottish. I would ask if you have recommendations for those of us in the “Clydesdale” class as are my wife and I. We have thought about longer tris, but are a bit afraid to go more than our sprint length as typically “heavy” Americans.
Any advice for someone with one foot a size bigger than the other? Left is UK 11.5, Right is UK 10.5 😳🤦🏼♂️
I’ve read that some ultra runners just get their toenails surgically removed and this has always been of interest to me! Seems a lot simpler Lol
Fuck. That. 🤣
why didnt you mention about landing position? If you land too far forward, you're braking casuing a lot of friction
Thanks, good advise.
This was very helpful.
The skin under my big toes is constantly ruined. In fact, there's always a big patch with missing skin. The skin gets injured when I run, and then it dies. I cut off the dead skin with sissors, let it heal, and then the same thing happens when I run again.
I'm gonna buy new shoes and some lube and see if that helps.
I was getting friction on the bottom of my left foot tried all sorts but to no avail. Finally tried rubbing solid cream deodorant on my feet works a treat. Since used it for friction on my shoulders when using my camel back.
But I am having those blisters for almost 2/3 months now,
On both foot last small finger,
Its has dreid out but still hurts during running and walking
Thanks for this
You're welcome Bob
Just after my long run!
Fortunately I don't struggle with any of the things pointed out in the vid, however I have clubbed feet, which brings with them a whole different set of issues!
Does anyone have any advice regarding whether or not you should remove hard skin from your heel/ ball of your foot. Thanks in advance
Wearing toe socks like injiji's completely eliminated my blister problems!
Thanks for the video. Learnt a few points there as I have just started running. I know you did a video on when to replace shoes but thought I would ask here. So a recommendation is to replace after 500kms, you must do this in around 3 months. Do you replace shoes every 3 months roughly? Cheers
I bought my current pair of shoes in Feb-2019. They've done 1700+km. I am looking for replacements, but haven't really settled on what I want yet. But the shoes seem to be doing alright so far.
Wow. That's some distance. Amazing. Thanks for the reply. I have the Nike Air pegasus turbo 2 and live them. Done 720kms in them since December and they feel good! Will definitely buy again. I think I should have 2 and alternate i hear
foot care. A subject very important, because without proper care there is no running.
i've been running with socks that have holes in the bottom :(
My right foot overpronates and my left is neutral so I have to orthotics on my right foot...but I get blisters from the rubbing :(
Nothing about massage???? I’ll always sit in front of the telly and roll my feet over a spiky ball/frozen bottle of water. Does the trick, even during a 200km week
Agreed!
How would I run with a blister. Please answer!
One of the common phrases the Cowboys say is “if a horse doesn’t have feet you don’t have a horse” our feet take a beating not only from running, but every day life. When it comes to my family we never skimped on shoes. The running store I go to they have you run up and the sidewalk or the store watching you tracking. Most new shoes feel good so I start looking for any nuances like rubs that will eventually cause issues on longer runs. BE PICKY. Love you feet.
When I run my hard skin on my feet gets sore breaks out bloody blisters! I'm getting something for my feet 😂
For me, my right foot hurts like I have something in it. My doctor said I might’ve stretched a muscle in my foot or something.
been running for a week daily for the first time in my life and my big toes already have blisters
You mentioned peeling at the beginning but that was it? Now I gotta find another video. Oy. 🤦♀️
Glad to hear the recent 100K with your ‘What-could-possibly-go-wrong?’ hilarious mate was blister free (watch the 100K here ruclips.net/video/xpAoIwDA3ac/видео.html ). Now, please, tell us about the day(s) after and your recovery, Mark.
Love the quote by Emil in the video! Greetings from Czech :)
Is that a david shrigley on the wall?
Good question, we will ask Mark
Mark's partner, Cassie, here. It's by Joshua Petker, one of my fave artists.
A table tennis once fell on my feet. Since then I always had issues with that toenail. Until I started logging a lot of km. It fell off and grew back the right way. So that was actually a blessing. The issue with toenails is when they're really thick (not necessarily long) you can lose layers of it. Landing too much on the forefoot was the reason this happened.
I freaking hate running. I have no idea why I'm watching this. I actually like the feeling of being sore
Do you play the guitar?
Badly 😂
Shout out to the classical guitar in the background :-P
Cheers Martin, maybe we will have to ask Mark to play on the channel sometime ;)
@@gtn That would be awesome! Next video- "how triathlon and music are the same: discipline, drills and determination"
Second
I experienced all of them right now my toenail is going to fall off
I’m telling you guys right now! Don’t pop it but put an ice pack on it! It will dry that shit up! Easiest solution of life! Keep it on ice yes it’s cold but best solution!
You lose your nails mainly on long runs with steep downhills.

My mum won’t let me get new shoes :(
They are getting small for me and I hurt the side of my foot today and she won’t let me get new ones :(
