  • There’s a lot of talk and information about EV tires. Some of it’s good. Some of it’s wrong. Most of it is somewhere in between. In this video we try to cut through the opinions, hype, and propaganda to provide real, testing-based answers to some of the tough questions surrounding EVs and the tires they use.

    Outstanding video from a super company! I have used the research function that TireRack provides free on line to us all in choosing many of my replacement tires - including direct tire purchase from TireRack. While truly every sentence in this video was not a surprise, the compendium of all of them in one video has resulted in one of the top educational videos I have ever seen. I used TR when choosing tires for my current BEV and my plug in hybrid before that. I look forward to future TR videos regarding electric vehicles. GREAT JOB TireRack!

    Interesting video. What would be useful is to have a rating on each tire model on the market for rolling resistance / efficiency. Unfortunately, it's very hard to find objective data on that. I'd like to see that attribute added to your tire rating charts, your Tire decision guide and to your test result charts.

    Great video. Another thing that contributes to perceived range loss is the difference in circumference of the old warn out tire and the new one. My old Energy AS tires were 491" in circumference, and my new CC2s were 511" a full 4% more distance per revolution. While that doesn't affect the actual range, it does affect reported range and efficiency.

      Good point. I was surprised that this was not pointed out in the video. And the range loss varies by tire; for example the Kuhmo HP71 starts out new with only 9.3/32 " of tread depth. Many other tires have 11/32 " of tread when new.

    Would love to see some testing around AT tires for off-road focused EV trucks like the Rivian R1T, both P-metric and LT for stronger sidewalls. Currently hoping the upcoming Toyo AT III EV is going to perform well.

    Great info. Consumers should be better informed about rolling resistance. In Europe, governments have required tire manufacturers to post rolling resistances for each tire, by brand, model and size. In the USA manufacturers want to keep consumers ignorant of RR; just buy what we want to sell you and stfu.

    Have you tested going to a narrow rim? I have a Model Y and the rims stick out past the rubber. So you curb them just going through a carwash with guide rails. I am buying winter tires with rims and I am thinking about going to 8.5" rims.

      Jason from Engineering Explained had a similar situation on his Model 3, and fixed it by going to a different wheel size. This also had several other benefits. On RUclips search: Engineering Explained, how to prevent expensive Tesla wheel damage. Also check out: EE, why big wheels are a bad idea on electric cars.

      @@omelborpon3159 I dropped to an 8.5" this week. They look great and just that inch makes a big difference (that's what she said). Not sure how range will be affected. Also weight went from 32lbs with the stock time to 21.9 lbs.

      Thank you for providing your vehicle's information. We would like to clarify: do you want dedicated winter tires or all-season tires equipped to handle winter conditions? If you want a dedicated winter tire, are you looking for a winter tire and wheel package or just winter tires?

    I've heard that tires need to be rotated every 10,000 miles on many evs. 7,500 miles on the Tesla cybertruck.
    Is this true?

    Theres no way around it;
    the tires for EVs demand more of your money than what is necessary for an ICE vehicle.

    • @BasicTrainer1
      @BasicTrainer1 2 месяца назад +1

      Agreed. With tesla OEM tires lasting 2-4 years (depending on how much we drive) the average fuel savings over 5 years essentially pays for 3 to 4 new sets of tires. It’s easily justified.
