When it comes to this scooter I must leave a comment. I once owned this “pony” when I was in college. It is reliable as long as it is taken care of, or not. I parked this bike outside everyday for two years, both summer and winter. I lived in Indiana so the winter was no joke. The start button stopped working after a year. But the kick start worked until the day it was stolen. Yes it was stolen after two years. The only maintenance I did was oil change. Many many good memories with this bike, especially for parking because that bike can park anywhere, basically anywhere a bicycle can park. As a result, I can leave my dorm at 9:25 and sit in the class at 9:30.

I had a 150cc, and it kept blowing out the exhaust gasket. I could never figure out why. I even took it to a local scooter dealer and had them test it. As they were testing it, it popped out the gasket and the bolts with locktite on the bolts. I ended up trading it for a kz440, which then got stolen, and I couldn't get it back because I was working on getting it running, and the title wasn't in my name yet.

@@dragnridr05 - Just as a curiosity. Most case scenarios a blowing exhaust gasket can be traced back to badly matting surfaces. A badly designed exhaust also tend to do that frequently! I seriously doubt that there is an engine kill switch on that side stand.
I've never seen a TaoTao that didn't have a ton of obvious and nonobvious problems (electrical, warped brake rotors) once I talked to the driver.
I owned a Jonway 250CC clone bike and it had engine and electrical problems (workmanship issues).
Honestly - get one of the Taiwanese manufactured variants (Kymco / Sym), and you will have a bike that you will still be riding and not repairing 6 months from now.
Laughing about "if I open up the throttle it bogs down", how does something like that leave the factory? Only in China.
Also, "how is it only getting 100mpg?"... well, the engine was designed in the 80's. The carburetor obviously isn't adjusted correctly, since it bogs down when you give it full throttle.

These things have tons of potential, i owned one for over 3 years, was full of problems but i actualy loved it. First things you should do is get rid of all the limiters, 1 in the carb, 1 in the variatior, 1 in the exhaust/ exhaust part of the engine and the rpm limiter in the cdi block-its right under the battery. For performance things, best would probably be swaping it to some sort of 70cc group and a better exhaust. Only difference is, i had a 2 stroke, u have a 4stroke.

After a bit of work to the the cheap plastics and tuning the motor, the scooters run awesome and are super reliable. Also, you don't need to buy a new carb, if the carb is "non serviceable" then you can use a Dremel to cut flat screwdriver heads in the screws. With a couple hours of fixing up the cheap ends, it can turn out awesome.

I had a similar scooter when I was in China. I had a 51L trunk at the back, I could put a 50 kilos sack between my feet, or hang grocery bags from the hooks, put two 25kg flour bags in the back mounted box. I weigh 120kgs and wife in the back , she's 70kgs. That's actually more than you could put on Electra glide on Honda goldwing. New scooter cost me just a little over $400 together with all the accessories and box, helmet gear and gloves. A tool box and air pump. The suspension was amazing. Small wheels easily let you turn tight spaces. Best of all. Half a dollar gas could get you 30km. Scooters are awesome. They're practical super economical, have tons of storage space and great for daily use. In Asia almost everyone owns it. Either electric or gas. I just don't understand why people in America need +1000 cc and even 2000cc bikes that don't have space even to store your helmet. That big motor is just carrying around all the extra metal weight that doesn't even need to be on the bike because it serves no additional function. Almost all bikes in America have zero practicality and pure leisure .

Everybody should own a 50cc 4stroke unrestricted scooter. The freedom and practicality it offers, and the way it resolves traffic problem, could change our way if life. South East Asian countries have really figured this out perfectly, by accident (low gdp) or by astute conscious collective cultural choice.

The combustion chamber is about the size of my thumb nail so you can’t expect too much from it. But it is fun to ride. And they’re cheap because they are basic operating systems (air/fuel/spark). After 3 months fuel was spilling out of the carb while riding. It ended up loosing compression. But I was riding it way to far. 22 miles one way and 44 around trip to and from work lol. It was fun and it made me want to actually go spend big money and get a motorcycle.

Actually in Vietnam you see many high mileage scooters! And in other developing countries you see super high mileage on bikes that folks in the states think of as really cheap. I saw several bikes like lifans in Peru that had more than 50,000 km. We have a Piaggio zip the speedometer cable died at about forty-five thousand kilometers. That was about five years ago. The zip is considerably faster than that. I'm not making comparisons just saying that little scooters like that can really be useful in certain cities. And they will check about as much punishment as you can dish out

I used to think that too. But, I've changed my mind about it a bit. I live in Fl. It's just me on my own. The truck I had for 11 years has past on. I have a license, I could get a car, truck, but I could only afford a few thousand $ vehicle, which means constantly fixing something or make payments for a better vehicle, which would mean higher insurance premiums. A nice scooter is all I need. Not a Tao Tao, but something good 50cc or higher. I'll spend $1500 maybe, no insurance payment, if I choose. no car payment, easy parking-park on the sidewalk, no more traffic jams (as much),100 mpg, less stress about mere transportation. Should have got one awhile ago but, there was and is that stigma. I'm caring less about that and more about the money I could be saving. But, I know what you mean. I'm a single man in his 50's.

100 dollar 26 inch mountain bike from walmart plus a 600 dollar 1000w hub motor with 48v of batteries gives me 35 to 38 mph speeds with a range of about 20 miles. I built this in 2010 and it's still going strong. Now I want a Dirt Cheap 200cc scooter because I need the speed for interstate driving and want way more range than the electric bike can give. Redfox Powersports has some for $1049 but I can't afford that plus the 250 dollar shipping. Looking for used willing to pay 600 bucks.

    • @umamifan

I've always considered buying an e-bike conversion kit with the batteries and assembling it on my bike (it's a hyper-brand walmart bike). I got it cheap $50 off of facebook marketplace, the dude just wanted it out of his basement and it rides well. Could I potentially just buy the e-bike kit + batteries for it and save more overall? In my state e-bikes are considered just bikes so I can ride one without a license to and from work (summer job) and potentially school

    • @DivergentDroid
      @DivergentDroid 3 года назад

@@umamifan Sure you can, that's what I did. The ebike kit comes with everything you need. Depending on place you buy it from, batteries can be offered. I got mine from AmpedBikes but not sure they are around anymore. 4 SLA 12v 20ah batteries for 48 volts will cost you about 130 dollars and may last you 2 years. If they offer Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries, they will run you about 700 (or more) at least for a 48v 20 ah battery but they are much lighter than SLA's. I would up buying a 150cc scooter from RedfoxPowerSports and love it so far. It has much more range and power than my ebike and a few dollars to fill the tank is way better than waiting 5 to 8 hours to charge a battery. Depending on how much you are willing to spend, you could build a pretty powerful DIY ebike cheap but you'll still have long charging times.

Please modify it!. I got one out of curiosity a few years ago and went through some modification on it and honestly love it it's just fun to piss with because of how cheap everything is

I had one of these scooters. I had it for 4 years before it got stolen. Doing Uber and door dash. Had like 15000 thousand miles or honestly way more because after the 2 year the milage meter cable thing broke. I never changed it. Just normal maintenance and this thing would be extremely loyal to you I promise
