A top USL team could probably get more points in MLS than the New England Revolution, Chicago Fire or Sporting KC. MLS sides are more talented but a well run team with less talent is going to be more consistent than a talented team that is run poorly.
I would want to say yes, but the closest example we had of this was when FC Cincinnati came up from USL in 2019. I believe they had more USL players from 2018 than any other expansion team ever and they came dead last.
Ordinarily when a team gets promoted, they get a few major signings that can potentially help the team in the top flight. And I wonder if Cincinnati might have had a different season if they were promoted instead of being an expansion team.
@@erickbyarushengo4726 it's a very fair point you make. Cincinnati had just paid a massive expansion fee and was also spending hundreds of millions on a new stadium they absolutely went cheap on the roster the first season in mls
@@RogueHetero you mentioned something that I never thought about. In other leagues, where they have promotion/relegation, they already have a stadium in place. Whereas these MLS teams have to spend so much money on an expensive stadium. And there are times when a fancy new stadium isn’t so necessary. I can easily see Sacramento or Louisville doing fine with the current venues they use. If only every expansion team was given the privilege of not having a stadium planned ahead of time like they were told and just play in a baseball stadium instead for the unseeable future.
San Antonio FC was pushing hard to be moved up a few years ago. Then MLS decided to give expansion to Austin. The fans in San Antonio just have another reason to not like Austin
Tampa Bay Rowdies would compete. But they won’t let them move up because Orlando has a MLS franchise and they don’t want to compete in central FL for the fan base. Same reason the NBA won’t place a franchise in Tampa with the Magic in Orlando. Thing is, neither the Magic or Orlando City get any sports coverage on TV in the Tampa area because Tampa isn’t interested in Orlando sports teams.
I mean once they get the money, and can get in better players, probably a lot of them. Some of the MLS teams just don't have any passion, and would lose out.
The question was not if a USL could WIN an MLS conference, it was if they could avoid relegation. The fact Sacramento FC went to the open cup final shows that they could compete in the MLS not just avoid relegation. Louisville City, Indy 11, Tampa Bay all could displace some of these bottom MLS teams. It would challenge the owners to make more investment in the team to keep them competitive. John Fisher is doing to San Jose what he has done to MLBs A’s, it’s a disgrace! The problem would be condensing the league to 20-24 teams with home and away fixtures for all. Then USL teams would struggle being on level playing field with solid mid tier MLS teams.
The answer is yes because all MLS teams have shit defenders and goalkeepers. They spend millions on forwards or a midfielders and hire amateurs for defenders. So yea a USL team would probably win their cup if they signed real defenders.
MLS has to incorporate promo/relegation. Until then, it’s a gimmick league. Games means nothing. It’s unwatchable for me. Can’t wait for euros and copa and the start of the 24/25 top 7 leagues.
29 teams soon 30 with San Diego coming and no relegation. Merge both leagues and start relegation. Take the bottom 10 throw them to the 2nd division. 3 up 3 down every season.
I’m for pro/rel and would like to see it happen here, but I can’t see it happening anytime soon, even if MLS buys out USL, etc and puts it all under the mls umbrella. they want that nfl socialist style even though a good chunk of the nfl owners are also in the EPL or English league. playoffs will remain because there’s to many teams in the league and they don’t all play each other. Unless you switch things up with divisions but then it’s unfair as well since they won’t play home/away. There is a salary cap to an extent in Europe but it’s different compared to the hard-cap in nfl. The roster rules are even more complicated with gam, tam, etc
@@Kyleterp1 In summary....MLS will never be a real league, and if you spend your money supporting it you are being scammed......Lastly those complicated roster rules you site, the league is more than willing to throw them out the window if they get in the way. Why does Chicago Fire deserve to be protected, if they aren't going to put up the effort to stay up? How did the MLS survive prior to NYCFC and LAFC if they are both so crucial to the MLS' success, and weren't there at the start? Why are the MLS fan bases so weak that going down a division is seen as instant death for their clubs? What's the point of all the ownership rules requiring the owners being the richest of the rich, but if they were to get relegated somehow their clubs wouldn't survive?
