    The biggest fail is announcing that these watches will be available online few weeks after launch and then few days later announcing that it will be stores only. It's the biggest marketing fail I have seen in a while.

      As an Omega owner and lover the epic fail ; planned or by happen stance is a black eye for people wanting to get into the history and make of Omega. As stated. DONT pay over list and put cash in the pockets of the scalpers! They are no better than ticket scalpers and now with all the faults being discovered with the QC of this offering, wait

      First, I was about to buy a Moonswatch. But since the movement inside cannot be replaced in case of a failure, I decided not to buy one.
      Coincidentally, I found an unbeatable offer by Bruno Soehnle for one of their high-end quartz chronographs at a price just 49 Euro more than a Moonswatch. So I got a high quality watch, instead of a cheaply made Swatch for about the same amount of money.
      Bruno Soehnle even decorate their quartz movements with Geneva stripes and polished and blued screw heads and put them under a display case back!

      Well in their defense they never expected the reaction that this release caused, so naturally their strategy had to change. Let's say they did release this online, then we would be experiencing the same issues we had with the Playstation 5's and all the other hot items that were bought up by bots. Does this situation suck for us as consumers? Absolutely yes, but remember at the same time this problem was also caused by the consumers. I'd say just be patient and eventually they will be more widely available.

      Yeah it was an epic fail. I think they fell for the "make it scarce and then it will be cool" BS that everyone is attempting to do. It's so transparent and embarrassing what they're doing.

    Funny thing - at time of release, I would have gladly paid and placed an order online even if delivery was “fall 2022 or winter 2023.” A month ago, I would have stopped by a store and grabbed one if I was in a city with a store. Now, I truly think I would walk past a full display in a window with little more than a shrug. I just don’t want to be associated with this silliness. Nice idea, off putting execution.

    I own several Omegas & love the brand. At first I thought the Swatch Moon Watch would cheapen the Omega brand. Then I realized this is a fun watch available in fun colors so you can wear the watch to fit any mood or situation. It is cheap enough to buy all of them. Then reality set in. Swatch said it would be readily available and it is not. Swatch said we could buy it online (since there are not many Swatch stores) and it is not available. As of today, I have soured on this limited supply strategy and no longer want to waste my time to keep checking the website to be continually disappointed. I have lost interested in buying the watch. Kudos to the Swatch marketing department for breaking its promises.

      Is some of this down to the fact that they just can't make them fast enough and it was a much larger success than they ever expected? I'm not sure if this is a case of trying to copy Rolex, PP and AP with limited supply or it was just much more popular than they could have dreamed?

    The MoonSwatch is a classic case of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
    Swatch took a marketing coup of massive proportions and they turned it into a Mack Sennett Keystone Kops comedy.
    They could have sold tens of thousands of watches and created thousands of new customers who could buy their products for years, but a bungled roll-out and a totally screwed-up supply chain has resulted in a black eye for the Swiss in general and the Swiss watch industry in particular.
    I wanted to buy two or three on March 26, but now that I’ve had a chance to reflect on it, I wouldn’t buy them at any price.

    • @TECHFIGHTER
      @TECHFIGHTER 2 года назад

      Doubt this. You’d buy and if you didn’t given the chance then that wouldn’t be a very smart move. Btw, my kids and their friends know what Omega is and had no clue before this launch. I’d call it a win.

      @ichkommentiernurkommentare7237 2 года назад

      I actually had the chance to buy one at retail a couple of weeks ago, but didn't do it.
      When they launched I was basically ready to buy 4 of them, but after having to wait for so long, the hype died down somewhat. I'd still have bought one at this point tho, the final nail in the coffin was when I learned that the "crystal" is so cheap that it can be completely destroyed by the paper the box is made out of - and can't be replaced.

    • @danieldravot341
      @danieldravot341 2 года назад +3

      @@TECHFIGHTER, your response is hilarious!
      You don’t know me, and suggesting I’d buy one of the things at this point is absurd. I was swept up in the hype, but the worse the roll-out became, the less I wanted one. That they were not available on-line was dismal, and the suggestion that I “drop by“ one of their stores hoping for the best (with the closest one five hundred miles away) shows that people from small countries don’t understand the vastness of the US west of the Mississippi.
      I don’t need a MoonSwatch because I have two Omega Speedy Moon watches, along with thirty or forty other various Omegas, vintage and modern. I have been collecting / accumulating watches for thirty years and the last thing I need now is a MoonSwatch.
      As one person said elsewhere, you’re not getting an inexpensive Omega, you’re getting an expensive Swatch, and one purchased by Bark & Jack two months just had a chrono pusher snap off! I see that as a dead loss . . .
      If your kids and friends now know about Omega, good for them. I’d say they learned a lesson in how to fail miserably in marketing . . .

    Welcome to the sneaker world especially two years ago and especially hype collabs. I personally had no clue about this moonswatch release But for anyone into sneakers or familiar with that community this is pretty much the norm with any hype/limited /collab release. Only limited locations, long lines, impossible to buy online unless you're lucky, resellers somehow getting most of the stock, insane resell prices sometimes into the thousands that people are actually willing to pay supporting the insanely high resell price, OG collectors and true sneaker enthusiasts frustrated at the situation etc. Swatch like Nike when it comes to collabs in particular could easily make more to satisfy demand and release the product as a general release but that's not the point. Scarcity and difficult to obtain even for an item that does not cost much money is a big win marketing wise. Watch them try this with the Seamaster next. If Swatch owned Tag Heuer they'd probably try this with the Monaco next. Wheather purists agree with it or not This wasn't aimed at them. This came straight from Nike's playbook. I swear Swatch must have sought advise from Nike. I actually own a Speedmaster. I bought mine in '08 but I gotta get it serviced. Love my Speedmaster!

True fact, a good number of people I saw buzzing between the two London Swatch stores were already carrying a Swatch bag with a moonswatch in AND 2-3 pairs of trainers from the hype / tier zero or whatever sneaker stores. I dunno, it's like someone is giving them the heads up. Or they are good at guessing.

    I went to the Frankfurt Swatch store to buy a first watch for my daughter 2 weeks ago and when I arrived there was a big queue ~20 people and security outside the store. I guessed it was about the moonswatch as I could see inside the store no one was inside shopping. Had to ask security if I could go in and they then got a store assistant to come and speak to me. I explained I wanted a field type watch for my daughter to learn how to tell the time and they let me in and were very helpful.
    Chatting to them they have had scalper’s waiting outside the store since the release just in case they get a moonswatch delivery and they now have security to keep them out of the store. The staff don’t even know when they will get new stock.

    At its price you should be able to expect that the chronograph hand should line up against the minute markers. The scratches on the glass should be able to be polished out. The case shouldn't leak dye. We all know that the watch is not a true speedmaster but there is a level of quality to be expected that both Omega and Swatch should have insured. They have let themselves down in this respect.

    I think your nuanced breakdown of the MoonSwatch is one of the best out there. I love mechanical watches but also really like these, especially the design details from other famous Speedys. But... I must say trying to buy one in London has been a truly awful, traumatic and miserable experience, I have however met many great people in the awful queuing system in London, they have made it worthwhile, but the flippers are still there and they rush to the front of the queue everyday, I have been determined to get one that I like, not to sell but for my collection, and have been number 8 in the queue even number 3, but I have NEVER in many attempts got the watch that I should have had the choice of because the bullies (around 20 or more of them) ALWAYS push in and intimidate the legitimate customers, it's sickening and happens EVEY SINGLE DAY!! Really a rotton thing that Swatch simply cannot control the intimidating gang of flippers. The watches however are brilliant in the 'plastic' as it were!! So a double edged problem, a great product that is scarce and able to be sold outside of the store immediately for double or more. Thanks for your insights.

    First time viewer of this channel and liked your take on this...strange case. I was unaware of this product until a few months ago and was also exited by the prospect of a fun, inexpensive and colorful take on a classic, the inexpensive and colorful aspect of it being critical to why I liked it, but I was taken aback when it was not available online and saw what a mess it is to get it, and really not impressed with the cheapness of it. I enjoy watches and astronomy, but I'm also aware that this is money I can't be affording to throw away as I have kids, a luxury item is not high on the list of things I will spend on, and frankly my wife (who'd be the recipient of a colorful swatch-speedmaster) wouldn't be too crazy about it, as neither of us are big on jewelry, don't have a need for it and already have watches to cover our needs.
    I'd still rather look for a nice vintage Omega Constellation and give it to her as a gift, but again, she'll probably enjoy it more if I use that money on a nice trip or something she uses more day in and day out. If it was for me and watches, I'd still rather have a Bulova Lunar pilot.

Over 50 years of creating stupidly affordable automatic movements and all original designs... it's virtually impossible to beat Seiko for what they offer (and that's why we love 'em) Congrats on the pickup brother! Given price was not a factor, I wish they found a more creative way to distribute these, like maybe requiring you show up with a >5 year old swatch to get one.

Spending 2 months in Hospital caring about something unnecesary as the topic of watch colllecting gave me peace and was a nice distraction from anything related to pain, death and suffering. I did wait though until the price went down to 500€.. paying the extra 250€ for my curiosity, knowing that the true value of the watch is not worth it. Yes, it Looks Like a plastic watch and honestly not the best of quality. I own Rolex, Tudor and also brands Iike Orient and the Seagull, so i can compare it to watches of real quality. It really Looks Like a 50€ watch to be honest. The Second reason why i bought it was that it has the tiny 2021 on the Dial. I Figure that the newly Produced moonswatches come with a 2022. The whole Moonswatch thing is very interesting. I mean, watches are jewelry, and people lining up to buy... cheap, disposable jewelry... is weird to me. On the other hand, I was looking for a nice cheap moonphase / day-night complication watch (being an astronomy aficionado) when this whole thing exploded, and THAT got me thinking moonwatch, and THAT got me thinking "but for this price?" and it all lead to setting my mind on a Bulova Lunar Pilot, 100US more than the official price of the Swatch/Omega plastic, yes, but certainly much more sensible that whatever inflated prices people where paying for those. And the Bulova is a NICE, quality watch. So to address one of your points, I guess this launch DID make some people get into a bit more quality watches, and that´s alright.

    Well I missed this launch and through this launch I revisited Omega as I wasn’t up to date that the brand launch some cool pieces and end up buying a real speed master , and I’m happy to include it to my rotation. This collab imho is shocking but cool a good or bad way to generate attention and disrupt the norm. These are battery powered and in a year or two people will be laying them down but one day when they could afford a piece I’m pretty sure they’ll gravitate to the real one as it will remind of the year 2022 when they were just starting and still in their way up that they were introduced to a cool watch called Omega. We have to remember humans are very nostalgic in one way or the other so I’d say more power to both brands and welcome to the new and upcoming watch collectors and don’t mind the negative vibe u get these people are just tired maybe lol but most watch collectors enjoy and have a good sense of humor. You've pretty much said it all about the Moonswatch 👍. I wasn't at all surprised to see the aftermath of this launch (hordes of people scrambling outside Swatch boutiques; Moonswatches appearing online being sold for far greater than retail). Good or bad, these are the realities of life in the digital/social media age.
    My personal opinion of the Moonswatch is this: At $265-270 it's waaay overpriced for me. I get it, the Omega and Speedmaster name holds weight, and that in itself--the brand, the prestige--is the main allure for getting one...or two...or five. Fear of being left out also comes into play, I guess.
    It's kinda funny that you're wearing a Seiko 5 in this video. Upon hearing about the Moonswatch and its pricetag, all I thought about was the Seiko 5. I'd like to think that I'm responsible with my purchases, putting extra emphasis on price and value; I don't care about "experiencing" a Speedmaster made out of bioceramic or what-have-you, I'll get a Seiko 5 Sports...with a cute anime dial 😄.
    I've said my peace. Cheers 🍺

The idea of this watch is great in the fact that it allows those who cannot afford a true Speedy to have something that draws inspiration from it. True, no one will be confused that these are as good, but I believe that is not the point. The point it is to have something fun and affordable. In that case, the folks as Swatch & Omega succeeded.

    At the start I didn’t understand the “this has cheapened my moonwatch experience “ crowd. Now I do, totally.

    Great video. It's brilliant marketing IMO. Swatch get a push, and I'm guessing at least 1-2% of their moon swatch customers won't scratch that itch they have and will buy Omegas in a year or two. I wanted a swatch for myself for nostagic reasons, but waiting in line is ridiculous. For Harry Potter, Apple products. a swatch, black friday sales. It's all ridicious.

      There was a time in South Africa when Burger King first arrived in Cape Town and there were queues for DAYS to get one... I remember that fondly (seeing the queue every day during my commute) ;) It's all ridiculous (but hilarious)

    I personally think that Omega is an aspirational brand (it not being the only one, of course). It has a history, quality and story it has been and still is creating. All Omegas in my eyes should be the prices they already are - in short offerering very good value for money, high quality and capable pieces. They should not be 'watered down' as such. I think a quartz Speedmaster or Seamaster (in the normal case and with the same everything else) at slightly lower price would have been a more suitable release whilst sticking to the brands values.
    Buuuut....that's just what I think. 🤷‍♂️🙂

    To me this launch is really something that comes from hype culture, it’s similar to what we see happen with sneaker releases several times per year, scalpers pick them up asap and flip them for profit on stockX or similar platforms. I do see a lot of cross over between sneaker culture and the people who are new(er) to watch culture, I knew this was going to be big when sites like “hypebeast” started to pick up on the story before the launch. Also in general these “hype” sites have been publishing more watch content over the past 1 year or so. I think this a very interesting direction watch culture is going.

    I have a 1952 Omega Geneva. It’s all original with 3 different color bands you can switch. It has a tool for removing and replacing the band. I have never seen another one.

    I thought of getting to the Swatch store that morning but when I saw the lines all over the world I just said “forget it”! If Omega can’t sell it online, I don’t want it.

    I think it’s cool to be able to covet something that costs less than $300. Usually this type of desire is out of reach.

    I bought one in Milan with no line. It’s was the last one in the city. I along with everyone else was told they were sold out, but somehow there was one in the back room. It’s a cool watch but I have to agree my Seiko 5 field watch is definitely a much better value.

    Have you never seen the Maurice Lacroix 'TIDE WATCH'? (pre omega x swatch.)

    The people in those queues were largely people who had no interest in watches. They had seen the Ebay prices for the handful that sold for stupidly high prices pre-release and simply wanted to make money. It could have been any 'product'. It was a modern-day gold rush. And most of the people in those queues were actually poor people being paid to stand overnight in queues to buy watches for dealers with deep pockets.
