Ruger 22/45 Mk. III problem

  • @BigAgitator I think that I am experiencing the same problem as tkolk13, since my mainspring assembly (??) won't pull away from the back of my handgrip more than about 1/2" or 5/8". This is completely contrary to how easily you extract it at 32s in your video. I'm currently at a complete loss as to how to restore my pistol to service, so I hope you can help!

Exact same problem as in the video. What worked for me was what was said in an earlier post. Turn the gun upside down with the magazine in and pull the trigger and hold it in. Then I tapped the upside-down barrel between the sights with a mallet and I heard something rattling inside. I removed the magazine and while still holding the gun upside down I easily swung the housing latch open and then pulled downward and the mainspring housing and bolt stop pin came out easily. "Hammer must be uncocked before pistol can be disassembled".

I have a Ruger Mark 3 22/45 and had the exact same problem as the guy in the video. I turned the gun upside down with the mag in, and kept the trigger pulled. I then used my rubber mallet and tapped the barrel a few times and the problem was solved. It is a trick of the trade that most people (including me) did not know and I am sure most gunsmiths don't want us to know.

This will help with Proper reassembly.
I found the Issue. I had the same problem with my 2245 and its extremely frustrating. The main issue is watching the videos online on how to disassemble/assemble. They leave out tiny details that will not lead to a proper assembly and function.
i had the exact same problem in this video. What you need to do is follow the manual exactly!
    1. have the hammer flat in the rear position when you insert the slide bolt,(not too far back just flat, also make sure the slide lock is in the down position)
    2. Insert the mainspring housing with the gun pointing down with magazine inserted
    3. at this point look into the rear of the grip and make sure the hammer is fully FORWARD now
    4. (this is where i messed up i still had the gun pointing down. ALSO make sure you can see the Hammer Strut. its a skinny piece of metal hanging from underneath the hammer. The hammer strut needs to fall into the oval cutout behind your mainspring housing) Have the gun pointing towards the sky, holding down the trigger with mag still in the pistol, close the mainspring housing as much as you can. (it wont go in all the way)
    5. with gun still pointing up (you probably noticed that you werent able to push the mainspring housing in all the way no matter how hard you tried) remove the magazine. ( now you should be able to close the mainspring housing).
HOPEFULLY IT WORKS OUT: My pistol is a Ruger 22/45 Mk 3 stainless steel 5.5 inch barrel, no mods.

Rubber mallet to the back then re-cock and fire, remove mag disassemble. Ruger tries to have very close and tight tolerances so their guns are very well made. Due to the clearances and tolerances being in the 1000ths of an inch it can feel tight trying to get them apart for the first time.
For the most part any Ruger firearm that does not come apart easily a rubber mallet is the answer. Stay away from the screwdrivers unless you are using it to remove a screw. Prying has literally fixed nothing without breaking something else. The gun comes apart that way so if it isn't coming apart reassemble and smack something with a rubber mallet. It helps to study the design and how it functions before taking any gun apart.
I studied the 1911 design and built one and have modified a lot of parts as well as hand made a lot of the parts of one. I can field strip it in about 30 seconds and some looser ones I've done it a lot faster. The Mark Series pistol requires a bit of design study to fully understand how that funky piece is suppose to work and if it gets stuck like that you will know what it likely is stuck on and know what to do.
Working on guns is like working on a car. You will certainly make mistakes but the more you work on them the better you are at it and the more you understand the design and possible problems of what is causing it.
Why it started working "funky" is because you lodged the part more that was resisting you by prying it. Some pins can be hard to get out or install but for the most part once you release a disassembly lever on any gun it falls apart without the need to pry anything.

Good grief. 12 years later and I'm stuck in the same position. Exact same symptoms. I'm at my wits and and about visit a gunsmith. Found this video and the tip about the upside down tapping. Didn't work first three times and again I'm about to give up when finally on the fourth try success! Thank you!. Only thing is now I'm afraid to re-assemble because I've never had this issue before in the 13 plus years I have owned this gun and I'm scared to have it happen again. Because I really thought I'd gotten it re-assembled correctly.

Maybe it's fixed by now, however that hammer tang seems to have lodge further up in the mainspring assembly. Unlatch the mainspring tilt the muzzle up with a magazine in and pull tge trigger and the bolt assembly back and forth. Objectively trying to free the dingus that is trapped, no muscle just jiggle those components and it should free the hammer tang (dingus)

Jeff Cole's fix is the correct one. The hammer has to be in the forward/fired position, to release the main spring housing more than 3/8" or so. I did not see either whether the OP ever responded back to any answers. Too bad.

I just bought a new one and have fired about 150 rounds through it. Experienced numerous problems chambering rounds and stove piping. Talked to the guys at the range/store where I purchased it and they suggested giving it a complete field strip and cleaning to remove factory lube coatings. That's where the problem got worse. We had extreme difficulty getting the mainspring assembly out and we couldn't get the barrel to disconnect from the frame. There were very pronounced scars on both sides of the barrel pin. We performed some cleaning and commenced to reassemble. During this process, there was a very noticeable dragging on the slide when it was about 3/4 of the way back. I could feel and see an inconsistency on the diameter of the slide and measured it with a pair of dial calipers revealing there was a runout of .011 from one end to the other. That would explain why the gun was stove piping as the slide was encountering a dragging before it reached a full stroke and the spent brass was not getting ejected fully nor was the next round being pulled from the magazine. The gun will also not chamber the first round by releasing the slide, I had to close the slide, insert the magazine then manually pull back the slide and release quickly. The QC of machining is terrible and I have completely lost confidence that Ruger is making a quality product. Heading back to the range/store tomorrow and will make a plea for an exchange for a Buckmark.

There is a video about this. Long story short you put in the mag, point the gun down, depress the trigger, and hit the back of the gun with something non damaging. This will knock the hammer to where it needs to be. If the bolt wont come out after you get the mainspring housing out point the gun up and hit the front a few times with your hand.

you can do two things first insert the mag t r y to fire it keeping your fingers around the housing barrel face up shake the weapon this should disengage . if this does not work remove the mag. use a rubber gamer. place the gun on a wood board barrel down hit the top of the charging Handel a couple of time this will set the housing latch open. I just got the same gun same problem and this does work. fires fine .

Freeing the backstrap easy enough. Just pull the trigger and wiggle the gun up and down. Freeing the bolt action, however is a different story I have been unable to solve. I see no one has address that part of your (and mine) problem.

I didn't follow the instructions when reassembling the firearm and wound up with the same exact problem. Took the it to a local gun shop and the gun smith it was totally locked up and I needed to sent it to the manufacturer. Found this video and tried the recommended solution and it worked. Doe that make me smarter than a gun smith LOL.

  • @MrTheree

Start by pulling the trigger at the same time pull the main spring arm back it should release then hit the muzzle on a firm but padded surface. You got to give a little power this will rotate caming pin so it can lock into the main spring cup like it's supposed to. If pulling the trigger doesn't free it up skip that step and hit the muzzle on the padded surface. This is how I fix the same problem. Best of luck.

  • @texasraider1137
    @texasraider1137 Год назад +1

I know this video is ten years old and it seems you corrected the problem. The steps are: safety check the gun with magazine in; pull the trigger; remove the magazine; remove the main spring; remove the bolt; separate the upper from the lower. Reassemble steps are: attach upper to the lower; insert the bolt; insert the main spring/bolt pin until it's fully engaged (do not rachet the spring at this point); point the barrel at the sky and insert a magazine; pull the trigger; rachet the spring back into the handle except the pointed part; release the trigger and remove the magazine; fold the last part (the pointed part) back into the handle......done. Here is a 40 second video demonstrating. ruclips.net/video/8za9QXR6Egk/видео.html Here is the longer version. ruclips.net/video/-LShRX-hTik/видео.html

Before disassembly, always cock the pistol and dry fire it to get the hammer forward. As you say, since you have it back together, hold it muzzle down and with the magazine in, pull the trigger and hold it while tapping gently on the back of the bolt to get the hammer forward. This is a religious issue folks. THOU SHALT HAVE THE HAMMER FORWARD BEFORE DISASSEMBLY. Marvinator, this video doesn't show disassembly so it's not much good for reassembly. I figured it out a long time ago but I always get a Tandemkross hammer bushing to simplify things and get the magazine popping out properly.

Yeah. Just an idea, but 1. put the mag back in, 2. hold the gun upside down, 3. pull the trigger back and hold it there, 4. tap the top of the gun on the ground. It may raise the hammer and allow you to remove the bolt stop.

Hammer strut (dangling thing) not seated properly. You SHOULD be able to tap the main spring housing out from the top of the gun with a wooden dowel and hammer. Check out some videos of MK3 strips or if you are old school like me read the manual that came with the gun. If all else fails sell your gun to me, I will fix her up and have it at the range in no time!

I pulled grips and pushed out sear pin and hammer pin, then removed main spring assembly. Then put all pieces back together and reinstalled main spring assembly. Seems like this happens everytime I take it apart to clean. Nothing like two hours of gunsmithing to make a great afternoon...not.

@pocatelloak Based on the geometry of the hammer, it just seemed that banging the muzzle would be the most effective direction- a few sources seem to concur with that theory. However, if the other method works better, i should add a note about that to my video.

+SurvivingSlim Put mag in, point gun down, pull trigger and shake the gun downwards sharply. A robber hammer doesn't hurt to persuade it but shouldnt be necessary, there is no spring pressure preventing the hammer from rotating forward.
Some people remove the mag safety to ease the assembly quite a bit.
