  • This video is a response to the Vibrato Stick Exercise #3 Video asking viewers if they’d like to learn vibrato with the Vibrato Stick, a simple teaching tool that, I hope, helps teach the awkward fundamentals of vibrato for violinists, violists & perhaps other string instrument players, too.
This (just under 30 minute video) explains how I created the Vibrato Stick, why, and a quick rundown of the exercises to help a violinist learn the difficult, perplexing & unintuitive movement that vibrato is.
    It explains the Vibrato Stick:
    1. Backstory
    2. What IS it?
    3. Vibrato Stick Exercise - Knuckle Touch Release
    4. Vibrato Stick Exercise - Knuckle Touch Release, Tap Tap Tap
    5. Vibrato Stick Exercise - Knuckle Touch Release, Wiggle Wiggle Wiggle
    6. Vibrato Stick Exercise #3 - Mirror Neuron/ Mary Had a Little Lamb (Twinkle Twinkle Little Star)
This video also says thank you to the surprise of the Vibrato Stick Exercise #3 video that has gotten over 1,000 views.
And this video also asks…do you want to learn this Vibrato Stick Method? And if so, to please comment and let me know so I can create vibrato sticks, instructions & videos on how to make or use the Vibrato stick and get them to you.
Thank you so much for watching the Vibrato Stick #3 exercise and for watching this video too!
My hope is to help you learn the fundamentals of vibrato and hope to help you reach your violin goals and put something beautiful in the world!
    Thank you, Hugs & Blessings!
    Vanessa

I know this tutorial may be two years old, but I am just finding it now. I am an adult learner and I a totally grateful for this video and admire your passion. (I will pass it on). I live and work in Africa (but Irish) and locally they use a stick your length for stirring the maize meal in the most places. This stick is called "mtiko". So, can you imagine what our people here are going to think when I start using the mtiko for violin vibrato practice.., can't imagine. They will probably put me away. No, I think I will use a bamboo rid. Thanks a million. (Hope I dint finish up in the pot!!). 😂

It is so wonderful to meet you!
I am so glad the vibrato stick exercise was inspiring and YES!!! Failure is the Pathway to success! Mastery is not about talent...it's about tenacity!
It is inspiring to me that you are a self study violinist! Taking on self learning is an act of courage and it's an honor to speak with you!
I am a teacher in Lake Charles, Louisiana and my hope is to love God and Love Others....and one way I hope to is to help people master basic violin.
So, may I ask, is there anything in particular you'd like to know? I'm planning on making videos and handouts that will teach everything I know to anyone who wants to learn.
But is there anything in particular I can help you with? Can you read sheet music? How is your bow hold? Would you like to know more about how to place your fingers on the strings for different notes?

VANESSA. great video. Im picking my violin up after about 8 years. this time without an instructor. I know im not ready for the vibrato but i find what seems to me as good thoughtful videos and download them. so thanks. your instruction on the stick and holding was different than ive seen before. I always thought there should be a gap or hole between the index fingers and thumb. that was interesting. anyway, this was a great video and i plan to use your ideas as i progress to the next level. your use of words with the explanations was top-shelf. I appreciate it. thanks. oh and the mirror neurons thing was right on. taught painting for years and broke it down step by step for my students. the mirror neurons thingy really registered with me. most of my students figured if they just watched what i did that it would be enough. by giving them the steps, as you do, it seems to work better for learning. at least in this old ape.

    Hi Vanessa,
Thank you, that was fun and illuminating. I notice that you have a double jointed lower thumb knuckle like me and it has encouraged me to see it hasn't hampered your ability to play beautifully. Also the information about releasing and pivoting on the thumb was really helpful because I play like that normally and I was worried it might cause me problems further down the road but watching this it seems maybe it will actually help. Thank you for taking the time to make and post this video. It's funny that there are so many vibrato videos online yet somehow they don't get that special light up moment across. We need lots of different ways to communicate the same thing because we all learn and comprehend things in a different way.
    Thanks again.

Thank you for this excellent lesson!!!
I am a beginner and have difficulty with vibrato, one big issue is I have trouble with right and left hand independence...as I speed up the vibrato my right hand speeds up....

    • @vanessavera-bernard3419
      @vanessavera-bernard3419  11 месяцев назад +1

Hi @jackloganbill605! I am so sorry! I had not seen your message till just now! Right/left hand independence…that’s something I had not thought of. Excellent question. In beginning learning/understanding & training (your muscles) vibrato, I’d recommend not using the bow at all.
Our instrument is intolerant of unskilled movements and, psychologically, I think us violinists know that. There appears to be a very real anxiousness for us to to get things “right.” And I think the stress of that, the pressure of learning vibrato, makes learning the movement and coordination even harder.
Thus, my friend, I recommend no bow at first.
Now, Incan think of a few things to try:
      1. While practicing the vibrato movement with your fingering hand, simply lay your bow on a string at the bridge and keep ur bowing arm still.
So move your fingering hand. Bowing hand stays stationary.
      2. Shadow bow & vibrato while watching someone on RUclips play the same piece.
RUclips is a treasure of performances. Choose a piece of music and see if u can find someone skillfully performing the piece on RUclips. Then, if/when you find an appropriate performance, watch it and let your mirror neurons do the work.
As you watch the video, watch the performer’s fingering hand and mimic the movement while shadow bowing.
Shadow bowing is a way to practice bowing without making sound.
To shadow bow, while in playing position, instead of placing your bow on a string, you turn your bow stick side down and slide the stick in the crook of your fingering hand’s elbow.
Thus, if you’re playing a right handed violin/viola, your bow’s stick rests in the crook of your left elbow.
If you’re playing a left handed violin/viola, your bow’s stick rests in the crook of your right elbow.
Then, once you’re in playing position with shadow bow ready, simply watch the violinist play and mimic the movements. You can isolate the vibrato movements of their fingering hand. Or you can concentrate on the movements of their bowing hand.
I’ll try these suggestions too and see how well they work.
      Any more questions?
      Thank you for reaching out!
      May you be blessed!

I am working on recording the exercises so you can hear what these exercises sound like…and…I’ll be crafting & giving out all my tips and tricks…I hope to get those things to you by the end of next week.

Also can u share vibrato daily exercises for the ones who know the basic vibrato but want to gain more control over the speed and width of their vivrato
And plz plz also teach different bowing techniques…not everyone is fortunate enough to have wonderful teachers such as you,( some like me have only 1 teacher in their city)

Hi Parth! And thank you for this comment too!
I will see what I can figure out for more advanced vibrato exercises. I had not really thought of anything advanced so will begin thinking on it.
      : )
And yes I can do some videos on bowing technique. I’m so sorry that your town only has 1 teacher.
If I had not been fortunate enough to be in a country where we can be taught in public school, I wouldn’t have been able to learn to play violin at all.
So I just want to say I am so glad you do have 1 teacher and I am sure that person is doing their best!
But we can all use help so yes..l will try to do a bowing video as soon as possible to help you and at least 1 other fellow violinist with bow control.
Thank you for messaging and I hope to get that video out in the next week.
May you & your teacher and loved ones be blessed!

I’m working (and have been working on) on a concise version of the Vibrato Stick Exercises…Lol…it just takes soooo much time to get them done!
But as sooon as I’m done, I’ll be posting that video, too!
And I can make you a Vibrato Stick and send it…but it will definitely be faster if you made (and decorated) your own! Plus, the struggle and tenacity of creating your own VStick would help you to become familliar with the idea even before you began!
      : )
However, if you have any questions…about how to put the vibrato stick together or just general violin questions, please comment and ask!
      Okay?
Thank you soooo much for messaging Edward!
May you be blessed & have fun!

Any reason why my left wrist hurts so much….i play successfully with the knuckle touch release…
It didnt pain when there was no release…..and now after that release and practicing for 18 days still my left wrist hurts if i play over 30 minutes

      Hello Parth! Hugs & Blessings!
I’m so sorry but I didn’t see your message till just now!
I’m so sorry your wrist is hurting. It’s okay to be uncomfortable but not okay to be in pain.
It’s difficult to say why your wrist is hurting because I can’t see what’s happening.
Would you be willing to post a short video of you doing the knuckle touch/release movement so we can figure out why you’re in pain?
At this moment too…if you’re still experiencing pain, please take a break from the movement. We certainly don’t want to cause you more pain or injury.
So if you’re able to post a short video of you doing the knuckle touch/release exercise, I’d appreciate it so we can figure out the source of your pain and try to correct or augment the movement.
      Okay?
Again…I’m so sorry Parth that I didn’t message till just now! I just saw your message!
Hope to hear from you soon!
