Violin/Viola Vibrato Tutorial (Training my non dominant, bowing hand, to vibrato.)
In this violin & viola vibrato tutorial, Vanessa demonstrates how to do do the #vibrato movements with her non dominant, bowing hand
We will go through a condensed explanation/demonstration of:
1. What I sound like playing with my normal, left fingering hand
2. How Vibrato is a Radial and Ulnar movement
3. How we already move our hand/ wrist in the Violin & Viola Vibrato moment by Drinking From A Glass - just backwards
4. Position of our Knuckle Touch Dot and Fingertip Dots
5. How we move our hand “Forward and Back”
6. “Knuckle-touch release, Show (the dot) Hide (the dot)” closer to the body of the violin or viola (III, IV, or V Positions)
7. “Knuckle-touch release, Show (the dot) Hide (the dot)”...

This was a simple and helpful way to understand the movement of vibrato! Thank you for this explanation! As someone who is trying to learn on her own as an adult I really appreciate your desire to make this as easy to understand and learn as possible! God bless you also!!

I'm an adult learner. Currently at the 6-month mark. I know I'm waaayyy too early to even begin of thinking about vibrato🤭 but I have a question. So I went and bought a free-standing fingerboard. I guess you could call it a spare. No strings on it, just the sticker with the note placement. Would a free-standing fingerboard work in lieu of a vibrato stick? If not, I'm heading straight to Home Depot for my wooden dowel! 😂

Excellant! You have made vibrato much more clear. So if I understand correctly? Vibrato is the reverse of using a drinking glass in that the glass would be reversed? Or the whole hand? I think Im beginning to understand a little. So the wrist pivots on the bearing of the thumb. Would you believe I gave up on this over 40 years ago. IT WAS LIKE MASTERING CHESS. THIS WAS A MUCH CLEARER VIDIO AND I THINK I UNDERSTAND THE MECHANICS OF VIBRATO NOW. THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART! MOST GREATFUL. ILL GIVE THE DRINKING GLASS MOVEMENT A TRY AND MY INSTRUMENT. THANK YOU VANESSA!😮?

Im sorry maybe im just dense. What is this knuckle touch release? I thought the knuckle was at the back of the hand? You need to do a slow motion of this you claim. I understand maybe half of what your saying. I like the part about see the dot hide the dot. The rest I do not see represented in your fingers. Im not trying to be difficult. I think you have an interesting hack with the vibrato stick.I think your a wonderful teacher but I just dont get knuckle touch release, please edify. Your humble student in Oregon. Usa. Thank you!

I live and work in Africa (but Irish) and locally they use a stick your length for stirring the maize meal in the most places. This stick is called "mtiko". So, can you imagine what our people here are going to think when I start using the mtiko for violin vibrato practice.., can't imagine. They will probably put me away. No, I think I will use a bamboo rid. Thanks a million. (Hope I dint finish up in the pot!!). 😂

Thank you so much @itzikovadia851! Thanks for letting me know “Show the dot, hide the dot” helps! Yes my Friend, the vibrato movement is just weird - and because our violins are so precise, when we’re learning a new technique, our unforgiving instrument sounds so screechy that it seems as though we’re doing something wrong, when, in fact, you’re doing something correctly! So hugs & blessings my Friend! I’m teaching myself to play violin with my non-dominant hand so as to walk with you, so to speak, but figure out how to develop vibrato as quickly & efficiently as possible so I can pass what works onto you! So again, thank you!!! May you, your loved ones, and enemies be blessed! Vanessa

Helloooo @ThomasSicard3733! Hugs & Blessings to you & ur loved ones! Thank you for reaching out and telling me about your Viola playing challenge! I was thinking of your comment when I made this current video where I go through the Vibrato Stick exercises closer to the body of the instrument & also back in 1st position. Because I learned to play when I was around 13 yrs old in public school, I don’t remember how hard it was to develop my violin vibrato. I remember just trying and doing it. But because I’m trying to teach this unintuitive, difficult technique, I am practicing learning vibrato (and playing) with my bowing, non-dominant hand. Yes my friend - this is HARD, but it is doable. How are your fingertip calluses coming along? I think having fingertip callouses are essential to pain free vibrato, too. Question: As a pianist, why are u learning Viola too? Thoughts? Thank you! Violin/Viola Vibrato Tutorial (Training my non dominant, bowing hand, to vibrato.) ruclips.net/video/iC_7v0wTCk8/видео.html

VANESSA. great video. Im picking my violin up after about 8 years. this time without an instructor. I know im not ready for the vibrato but i find what seems to me as good thoughtful videos and download them. so thanks. your instruction on the stick and holding was different than ive seen before. I always thought there should be a gap or hole between the index fingers and thumb. that was interesting. anyway, this was a great video and i plan to use your ideas as i progress to the next level. your use of words with the explanations was top-shelf. I appreciate it. thanks. oh and the mirror neurons thing was right on. taught painting for years and broke it down step by step for my students. the mirror neurons thingy really registered with me. most of my students figured if they just watched what i did that it would be enough. by giving them the steps, as you do, it seems to work better for learning. at least in this old ape.

Hey Vanessa - this is a great video that is so useful to connect natural relaxed movements that we are already doing in our everyday life. We hardly ever aggressively hold and drink from a glass or else we will have the drink flood past our mouth and down our neck or maybe up our nose. The idea of our thumb being a fulcrum point on a glass is something we take for granted and hardly ever think of it in that way. What a great relaxed way to relate to the violin. No fighting, no trying to tightly grip. I like it! Thank you so much.
