Fascinating. Is it just a "homespun" effect they are after, or does it have some functional benefits too ? Also, are you using an optically clear resin mix, or just the standard stuff?
I know a few people who have embedded colourful nylon fabric in the epoxy, with good effect. First time I have seen a textured use.

There are strength benefits to cloths like flax, hemp, basalt etc. They are generally thicker and less malleable than glass cloth so not good at curves but for impact on flat surfaces its strong! I use Entropy CLR epoxy, it has optical brightener and UV inhibitors.
There is a video on this channel of a board I did a cloth inlay on. It was a poly board though, not epoxy. Any thin cotton will work, like a sarong. Natural cotton will have less potential issues though.

Why do you do both layers at the same time? Could you laminate the cloth and the the fiber glass?

Because it's epoxy, every coat needs a sand befire the next pour. Sanding the flax cloth will ruin it so I need something on top as a buffer.
