Beautiful comment... made me happy to read that! 'My Prayer' by The Platters is one of my all time favorite songs... from any genre! Powerful, beautiful vocals & music... the piano melody and haunting backing vocals are superb! ☺
I listen to a crapload of heavy metal. But at the end of the day, I often come back to the Platters. They just don't make music like this anymore. This song is so beautiful.
Same I listen to a lot of rock rap indie hip pop r&b country etc and at the end of the day I always go to listen to the platters because their music is beautiful
The chord changes & chromatic modulations from major to minor... fuggedaboudit! In the age of Melodyne and Autotune, who is even trying to learn such works of art, let along sing them. Same reason Nu Metal avoid the metal I grew up on like Sabbath, the Ronnie Dio years.
My late Dad loved the Platters. He was dying when I was married the first time.. My second time he was gone... My Husband and I danced to this song for our first dance at our wedding reception.. To this day... (34 years later on August 1, 2021) I still tear up... Rest in Peace, Daddy, I found my Mr. Right..... Love, your mad cap first born...
Your comment brought tears to my eyes. That is so beautiful. Thank you for sharing this. God bless you and your husband. And your Dad who is with the Lord. ♥️🙏♥️🙏♥️🙏♥️🙏♥️
High school in the mid 50's was a trip.My class back east was '58, and THE PLATTERS were just terrific back then, hit after hit, the BEST slow music to dance to ever. We were so cool, we never even knew how lucky we were, or how it all would change forever shortly thereafter. That fabulous music, those beautiful girls, the unbelievable cars - what a time it was to be young & alive! Hail hail rock 'n' roll!
I've heard many versions of this song. But they shouldn't bother. This is absolute perfection. One of, if not the finest vocal performances I've ever heard.
This song really reminds me of my father. The scent of childhood, when the dawn is fading and Papa plays this song welcoming the morning. Such a nice feeling..
I just love all of the songs the PLATTERS sing. I was so sorry when Tony Williams left the group & went solo on his own. He had such a short life, died at age 56 in 1993. Another beautiful voice silenced.
I thought you did not allow disrespect of a person on your comments. This person called me by my real name saying I was a musical MORON. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO?
My 1953 Cadillac convertible had the sweetest AM radio and The Platters were frequent visitors to that silver bullet at one of the most memorable times in my young life. Just try to wipe out memories like this. Nothing today can do it.
My dad wanted to use this song when we buried my mother. I grew up with this song and even now at 43 years old I still know it, and I sing it and I cry to it.
In terms of talent, power, lyrics, and arrangements, there was no better American group (not including solo performers here) from the 1950s than the Platters. No other group was even close.
almost 3 minutes of pure class. the harmonies are just so good. you can always tell the quality of a voice in slow songs. any imperfections are more noticeable. the vocals in this are top notch. x
My, my! So melodic. So transforming I love this song. I always have. I must have been four or five when I first heard it. As a little boy I would sway back-and-forth to this song in kind of a daze. I was obsessed with music, especially music that stuck, and this song stuck like a few of others that they did as well. The way they did their vocals, and touched each others talents. It’s rare when that happens, but it’s a wonderful life remembering thing.
My prayer story It must have been 50 years ago. I saw the platters do this live in a small Club off to the side of LaGuardia Airport in Corona Queens. The group does the opening numbers without Tony Williams. He comes out to lead. He trips and falls into the drums and cymbals. (Small stage). They pick him up, dust him off and he sings “My Prayer“ exactly like the record, exactly. We’re standing ten foot from the stage. This song was drilled right thru us….you don’t learn how to sing like that, he was born that way. If I remember right, I think it was New Year’s Eve.
These classics now days make my eyes watery. A great slow dance number that I never get tired of. One of those classics that never becomes outdated. It's lead singer Tony Williams (1928-1992) brought the magic touch to many of their hits.
"Mi plegaria" excelente canción tan bien cantada y tan significativa para todos los que oramos a DIOS al inicio y al fin del día. Muy buen y vale la pena escucharla.
I had the chance to see the Platters in concert just before moving to Texas. The lead singer's daughter has replaced him, but all the other members were there. It was absolutely sublime to hear them do all their old hits.
This song came out , when I was 4 years old. I am now a mother, a grandmother, and a great grandmother. I remember my mom and dad dancing to this song. And now my guy and I ( at least 2 times a month) pull out our parents music, ( album’s and 45’s) and dance and listen together. Nice to have when you want a little peace of nice, and a little slice of calmness. “Thank God”, for smooth jazz and easy listening.
I've been listening to this since I was around 6, and I'm now 12 and revisiting it. My parents love this group, and I'm tempted to agree. Have a nice day/night!
Well you stumbled on a great song from 1956 right before I was born in 1957, I was exposed to all of the music by my parents thankfully they are here on RUclips!! Keep exploring there are many artists from the 50's here!! Put Your Head On My Shoulder by Paul Anka, his 1963 recording is amazing, Since I Don't Have You by the Skyliners, I could go on and on!!
Mariah brought me here! 😊 I love both versions of this song. Mariah's cover has her signature melissma sound, mixture of soft vocals and beautiful belts.
@@annasnider5466 I would say her version is better. The singing styles are completely different, you can't compare them. Which you think is best is dependent upon the style of singing you like.
I was just a kid but I remember most of The Platters song. Having older siblings helps a lot. Them playing these type of songs on our record player having parties. Or just listening to the radio. I come back to these types of songs often remembering those days being at home with them and my parents. ❤️🙏😢
