Successful lifeboat launch is a combination of proper maintenance, crew experience and safety practices.
Its easy to suggest that launching a lifeboat looks simple as can be observed outside. However, even experienced seafarers get uneasy when they are strapped inside the boat during the drop.
If you are used to riding rollercoasters, this may be peanuts for you. But to others, its a stomach churning in a micro level.
Additionally, a drop of 4 or 5 meters would seem like an eternity when you are inside the boat. In fact, it only lasts about 3 to 5 seconds.
The drop is usually made while at anchor during calm weather. Other freefall lifeboat drills are made while the ship is moored in the jetty.
Though there have been a decrease in accidents regarding lifeboat drills and launches, accidents still continue to happen.
