GETTING LOST IN BRAZIL 🇧🇷 ROADTRIP TO CHAPADA DIAMANTINA

- We are driving on a little roadtrip around Brazil. Today we leave Itacare and drive into Chapada Diamantina, an area of Brazil that looks nothing like the rest of Brazil. We are trying to get to Lencois. On the way, Google maps take us to the wrong location and our car cannot drive any further. We take some of the worst roads we've ever seen and decide to call it quits and turn back. This is the Brazil Road Trip Travel Vlog (Itacare to Lencois)

Iam from Salvador / Bahia but live in Germany and Iam really enjoying watching You guys. Miss my Bahia ❤ Thank You!
Just be careful with Snakes And scorpions at Chapada. This is the time of scorpions get our of the plumbs. Só always check the toaliet before sit. Go to the Buracão Waterfall in Mucuge. The Way to Mucuge is amazing. It is time of the butterflies mating season And the way is full of yellow butterflies.
Use the WEZE app, it is an excellent GPS, we in Brazil only use it. And it’s better than Google Maps.
Hey Guys! I'm presently in Ollantaytambo, staying in the Apu Lodge. If you need anything from here or Cusco, let me know. Heading back to the States in a week.
Jus remember the Jaguars and anacondas dont want you guys get mauled or eaten
Hi guys, you should've selected "paved highways (roads) only" on the GPS. Chapada is a very famous and touristic place, so the roads to get there are very good. The thing is that the gps sent you to the rural roads cause it's faster ( you problably selected that option to get there as soon as possible). I recommend the next time u go through the paved highways and avoid rural roads. The trip will be a bit longer but it's safer and you'll be able to enjoy the view.
Perfect!
Yes.
BINGO
This is actually an excellent tip everytime you are not in a big city in Brazil.
Wrong route. Look at a paper map once in a while to identify larger roads or maps.me

in brazil there is a definition for your day: PERRENGUE! ..but after every storm, there is always a rainbow
I think in São Paulo we say “perrenho” which means going through a tough situation.
Perrengaço isso aí hahahahahah
You are crazy, about to enter the caatinga savanna without a guide. It's a semi desert, very vast and sparsely populated. Be careful, dnt get lost or break the car in the middle of nowhere
And ever download the main regional maps on google. I use to trace paved roads to bigger cities, from there you go to the smaller ones.
I see people give them plenty of advice. Hey, they will learn as they go.
I have been to Brazil many times. I met my wife there. So our family are there. Been in this exact area. Love it! Moving there in 5 years.
only paved roads folks. and if your car broke? no phone, no people, no food, no water... Don't do that again!!
True. Alex, you are puting yourselves at real risk in some videos. And I bet both of you are feeling stressed having to deal with this kind of crazy logistics. Spend more choosing less places to go. Its all about the trade off between quality and time. And do the planning along with professionals or foreigners who had already been or live in the places you go. You are missing lots of things just because the language barrier. Even the food you have been trying. Almost nothing of regional experience.
Vdd...
Exactly.

Really the northeast of Brazil is in bad shape. It’s their fault. They don’t read they know nothing about Brazil. Interesting to watch except for the beaches which bore me. LOL, .
It is almost impossible to enjoy Brazil like you guys are trying. You'd better choose a few selected places and spend more time in each one. You're only maximizing risk and getting tired.
as a brazilian myself, I felt like watching an american horror movie in which a happy couple doing a road trip gets their car broken in the middle of nowhere and then a crazy guy starts pursuing them. Be careful, guys hahaha

Make sure to choose paved roads on your GPS. Electing 'shortest way' is the shortest way to get your car stucked in the middle of nowhere.
I'm glad you have arrived to your destination safe and sound. The north and northeast regions are not the best when it comes to infrastructure, be careful when you plan your travel around there. I'm looking forward to what you're going to see and show us next.
Brazil looks like so much fun!
About the birds: What you see in the interior of Bahia is illegal trade of wild animals, which, incidentally, is a crime in Brazil
Oh, that is good it is illegal. Hopefully they do something to prevent this more in the near future
@@TheTravelbum they won't ... :(
yes but also you can find legal birds that's why it's hard to keep track of it, you need to get closer to see if they have identification and ring, in the south is very common in interior cities do have people walk with them and meeting with other people that have birds, like a pet animal and they are legal. they even have some sort of competition of birds, but again, not every bird you will see in cages with people walking them, most who have them illegally don't walk with them on the road at least where I live because cops will get them.
You need to ASK FOR ADVICE before getting in your car to Travel in these REMOTE Locations, you can get in a lots of trouble just embarking in Trips without knowing how to get there before and safe tips . Google Maps DON'T KNOW everything about it theses Locations LOCALS DO, so ask before taking the Trips is always recommended. Be safe guys. 😊💗
Yes! 👏
Hey, guys. A tip that can be useful on Brazilian roads: State road names start with the state initials and then a random number (e.g. if you are in Bahia, BA220, or if you are in Pernambuco PE120, Rio de Janeiro, RJ116 and etc); federal roads start with BR, like BR101, BR040... Road conditions are likely to be much better in there. In the interior of the country there are MANY unpaved roads like the ones you took. Sometimes these will be the only options for isolated places. But to travel between cities the best choice is State and Federal roads.
Small tip: when driving long distances in Brazil always take food with you on the car :)
We will now
I told them when they rented the car, and wrote here again -- let´s keep our fingers crossed they do this in the future. I used to do the same when I rented cars in the US and traveled over there, always a good thing especially for water (much cheaper when we buy it in supermarkets...).
Big tip: never do that again. Brasil has one of the worst tourism infrastructure in the world. It hardly pays off traveling long distances by car.
@@kefnl and how are they supposed to get to lençóis?
Pega um pacote com guia. Até irresponsabilidade deixar eles viajando dessa maneira. Segundo vídeo que eu vejo e é a segunda vez que vejo correndo riscos.
Couple of tips about road trip in brazil: if you're traveling a long distance way, put the name of the city you want to go to on the GPS, not waterfall or national park. Then, when you reached the city, search for your final destination. The "BR" roads (e.g., BR 101) are ours federal highways, and in the mosts states, they are the best options. Besides that, you cold take the states roads, like "BA" roads (e.g., BA 148) in Bahia state or "PE" roads (e.g., PE 060) in Pernambuco state. I do not recommend going if it's not one of these options.
It's pretty cool they are travelling here, but come on... The information you are giving them, they should look for. What about study the place before hand or try to get information about the roads etc? Road tripping without doing some research is not a good idea anywhere.
What a journey! I'm so glad you're safe. Wee uuuu. Can't wait for the next super show. Please remember to listen to your intuición. If in doubt don't. If it feels good do! Blessings on the rest of your journey and heal quickly Alex.
Hello couple, when you are going to plot a route to a new destination, look on google maps for the nearest city, so you will be guided to follow paved roads. If you put them on the GPS, waterfall, mountain, park, river, lake, you will throw them on bad roads, secondary roads, which are terrible and without movement. Loving the adventures of the two of you! Good Luck and have fun! 👏👏👏👏
Bahia's interior is very interesting with a culture very different from the coast. Amazing state! Bahia
The afro brazilian culture at bahia’s country Side is not that strong. Very different from Salvador And around.
There is no need to use secondary roads without asphalt at all times. Use the TomTom Go Brasil GPS is free and you don't need an internet signal to use it or use Google Maps which is also very good. But for trips I prefer TomTom Go Brazil as it provides better and safer roads.
For these destinations it is better to hire tour guides.

I'm Brazilian and I never saw those kind of roads you guys are driving through. I think you must be selecting the wrong options on your GPS.
Enfim. Tô vivo
Thank you so much for sharing with us your road trip in Brazil 🇧🇷 I am from Bahia but I live in the USA and I miss being there so much!!! I love that you guys upload videos very often:) can’t wait for the next destination.
Relieved we made it to Chapada 😅 most stressed we have been this entire trip.
You were literally in the middle of nowhere, with no cell phone signal, no internet, no water, no food, if your car had got stuck there, it would have been a chaotic situation. Thankfully, everything went all right in the end and it will be an adventure for you guys to remember in the future LOL
Choose paved highways, they might look like a longer way, but the dirt roads are so bad they're the ones that will take longer because of how much slower you'll be going.
Also remember Brazil is about the size of the USA without Alaska, so if you venture in the middle of nowhere again, might take a long time to get back in track.
Lindsey even with the hard comunication you must try talk to the people, use the google translator, whatever, if you talk more with the people you were not passing by this situations. Brazilians have a lot of patience and they don't mind wasting time to help someone else.
Hey Lindsey, I'm Brazilian and I went through the same situation as you. I live in Belo Horizonte and was going to a city called Ubá. In Brazil we currently have good paved roads in almost the entire country, but GPS usually traces rural secondary routes. I spent the whole day driving on the dirt road lost with a sedan bumping like crazy ahah. As the friend said above, try to focus on the routes that appear to be the main ones, which pass through relatively larger cities. I learned this the hard way.
People have said several times not to use Google Maps but you continue to use it. For those areas outside the big centers, you have to do a previous study of the route, talk to the residents of the surrounding areas about the best routes, or look for information online. Then plot a better path and follow it. The experience will be much better than simply defining your destination on Google Maps.
On rural areas, internet signal is usually very poor. Download Google maps offline before hitting the road.
Jimmy Page, Led Zeppelin's legendary guitarist, lived in Lençois for a while. He said that a strong connection with this place in Chapada Diamantina.

guys, you should have asked someone about the best way to get there and checked it on google maps before heading to Chapada. Check the
routes on google maps before leaving next time. Take at look at alternative routes etc.
For you to travel in Brazil you must use the Waze app. in the configurations remove dirt or back roads. good trip!

these dirt roads are completely terror in Brazil, and I guess you already read about setting GPS to paved road only. BUUUUT... these drone footages come out incredible!!!! Realy beautiful and cool

So nice you are in Chapada!!! There are amazing places like Morro do pai Inacio for the sunset, Poço Azul to swim in a cave, Cachoeira da Fumaça... you will see beautiful nature in Brazil. Not only beaches... 😍
Próxima vez contratem um guia!
Tiveram sorte......
Wow, guys, that was scary, very scary, you could´ve run out of gasoline... You need to do more research - ask people around before you hit the road... many farms all over Brazil have waterfalls... Google is not a good reference, even in the US... Get local maps, talk to people - good hotels have bilingual receptionists (no need to check-in, just ask for information, they´ll help). Chapada Diamantina is a tourist place, tons of tour buses and vans go up there, so that road couldn´t be it, clearly... You also gotta get some supplies and leave them in the car -- spoons, knives, forks (not the plastic ones, but real silverware - you can get two sets for about 5 dollars), plastic cups, lots of water, snacks, some canned food and a pot to cook something in an emergency, matches (get these supplies at a grocery store to save money) -- a minimum survival kit, if you´re traveling in unknown roads in a strange country, you need to be prepared. Actually, I went on a field trip to the Canyons (Bryce Canyon, Arches Park, Monument Valley, and the Grand Canyon) with a French guy and an Australian guy back in the 90´s - we met at a hostel in Las Vegas - and we took exactly that in the car, they were very useful, especially on the way back that we couldn´t stop because of the time to return the rental car... The French guy was excellent on the roads, he had old fashioned paper local maps and was very experienced - he was traveling the world on a motorcycle, but for the canyons, decided he would do it in a car - hence two guests to help pay for the rental.... Anyway, good luck on your next adventure, but please, do not take roads that you´re not sure are safe... Ps. Also, be careful with the coxinhas in gas stations or convenience stores, they sit there all day, sometimes they get spoiled, choose some crackers or packaged snacks, then find a clean place for a full fresh meal... in the south, the safe one is always pao de queijo in padarias or kiosks.... up there it gets complicated because it´s too hot...
I was so relieved and happy when you finally made it to your room for the night !
09:09 Realmente vocês estavam no meio do nada.
If you guys have some extra time, you definitely should come visit the south, there are great places down here, specially at Santa Catarina, witch capital is an island with more than 40 different beaches (its called Florianopolis). If you plan doing that, let us know
For sure, the best infraestructure is in the south. But I noticed that they like of wild places, I noticed in some videos that they like to show how poor is our country as well, not with words, but with images. They try avoid talk about it, but they love to show it! I know some dangerous cities in US, be careful if you'll to Chicago e.g.
Guys, you have totalk to locals before going to this places, so you get some tips and avoid this kind of troubles, its safer for you! These roads can be dangerous for many reasons...
Is hard to believe, but Google its not The best gps. Try waze and set main roads on adjustmensts
I'll stay tunned for the next vídeo 👏🏻
you took the wrong path, the roads are fully paved from itacaré to Chapada!
Be cautious with getting dirt roads to travel long distances. Specially up north where the infrastructure is not the best. You may be more lucky driving freely in the south countryside.
A hint...travel with your own metal spoons...they come in handy.

The Chevrolet Onix can use any mixture of fuel, E27 gasoline or E100 ethanol. You can choose by cost or to be ecological. If you choose by cost, you can multiply the price of gasoline to 0.7 and check the result. If is less than ethanol, would be cheaper to use gasoline because the fuel consumption is less than ethanol. If you want to help the world to reduce CO2 emissions, please, use always ethanol because it is 100% natural and if you consider all the cycle of our ethanol fuel, the CO2 emission is zero. ( Yes, we don't need electrical cars to be ecological here).
The other advantage of E100 Ethanol is provide more power to the engine and the engine doesn't lose power in warm weather. It is very good to drive in the roads that you need power to pass other vehicles in safe.

Btw I loved the chills this video gave me as you were driving on that road. Kinda creepy scary thrilling vibe that kept me entertained - this was different, I liked it :P
One more thing - I think you should consider going to Lençois Maranhenses - I'd love to go to that place someay and maybe Foz do Iguaçu in the South would be a nice spot to go too.
Keep up the good work you guys are doing! See ya
No Brasil tudo é longe e distante my friends
@@soobservo741 Porto Seguro é show
A chapada Diamantina também é show
At least you made it to bed! :)) cool and funny trip. And the room is not that bad. I guess after a day like this, all you need is a roof over your head :)
Looking forward to the next video!
Hugs!
Hello, you should´ve selected one city, Lençois or Mucugê , not Chapada or water falls or National Park.
Chapada is beautiful, enjoy! You remind me of Kara & Nate with the post card thing:)
Lol this dude is doing really nice because he already loves açaí
Guys, please be careful, if your car got broken and you had to call someone I think that won’t be possible. Watching it I was afraid, please try to find a tourist guide or avoid drive in roads like that, it will be much better for you guys
Hi. I am Brazilian and I’ve been living in U.S for about 4 years. It is such a pleasure to see you guys traveling through places in my country that even me have never been there.
Just a suggestion, please add the state where the city is located in order to help us to identify where are you guys. I hope you enjoy the Açaí.
Keep going guys, and a lot of good things still to come. Try to talk to those people as best as you can even when there's a language barrier.. People will do everything to understand you, then for sure the idea of thoses places will feel much more interesting and vou will feel a connection. P.S. Lindsay, when you get to a pharmacy get bepantol derma for your sunburn and use it on Alex to. Beijos kisses 😘😘😘😘😘😘
Hi Guys!! i'm watching all the videos... they are very very nice!! Well i would like to suggest to visit the Minas Gerais state ('mother" of the Pão de Queijo..), more specifically the SERRA DA CANASTRA NATIONAL PARK. The park stays in São Roque de Minas city (there is the mainly entrance of the park, because there are another 3). In this area you can visit one of the most beautifull waterfall of Brasil, is the Casca D Anta waterfall, in the São Francisco River (also one of the most important rivers of the country, which starts there, in the park and finish at in the corner of Bahia estate and Pernambuco estate).. In this city you can also prove the Canastra cheese (for me, is one of the best of Brasil), which is the natural of this area (only in there is the original)...Tou can Go to visita farms that produce cheese (in special the Canastra Cheese)
Caution!!! You are taking too many risks !!! Do not underestimate the size of Brazil because you can get lost in a remote place and unable to call for help !!! It is good to have a guide of the region to help you have a better experience !!! Not all Brazilians risk exploring distant places without having the proper knowledge !!!
Oh! And there's a magical place called Poço Encantado!!!
Birds in cages are very common here, and my personal opinion is that the people that keep birds inside cages are very stupid, it makes no damn sense to me and it's very cruel.
Totally agree.
Hello, The Travelbum We hope all is well . Great to see you again. We wish we could be in Brazil right now . We are hopeful Travel Restrictions will soon begin to ease. it looks amazing there
We just want to take this opportunity to wish you a very Happy New Year. Love and Light Sarah and Glenn
I don't understand where you are walking, you see, from what I know you don't have to go through such bad roads to get to Chapada.
Wow!!! Folks, you're a little bit crazy... 😳...rsrsrs...Take care about this kind of ride!! 🙏
Q&A: In your rental care contract, were there any restrictions on driving off road or on unpaved roads?
So the same thing happened to my friend in Ireland. Maps took him through a very bad road that was full rocks and holes everywhere, not really a road. Had to back track and checked maps and it was set for scenic or something like that. I'm sure it won't happen again but check map settings 😅. Have a safe trip, and stuff like this happens when traveling
Since watching you and your love of açaí, I have been searching for a restaurant in my town so I can taste and understand your love of this meal. Finally, I did locate a place but it was closed. But, at least, I know where I can find it ;-).
You’ll love it! Hopefully the one you have near you is a good quality one
Where are you looking? Would be interesting to try for the first time!
The Travelbum I live in Savannah. You make it look so good; I am intrigued.
Lindsey Fw I am hoping; will let you know how it is.
@@joannedefalco8789 if you find brazilian market;online market or brazilian bakery u easily can find: açaí, tapioca flour;brazilians fruit juice and pão de queijo
