LoL Nobody cares who the fuck Chris Evans even is if he's not wearing the Captain America gear. But he acts as if he was hot shit. Pratt can CARRY multiple shit and he's an good actor. RDJ is an EXCELLENT actor and he sells in whatever he does. There's a reason the Avengers had to be made in a way to make Tony the lead and the Guardians got lucky with Pratt because the guardians are fucking NOBODIES in term of fandom. It's hilarious a lot of those actors forget that people go see the character not the actor and so few of them have range outside that little niche they fell into

There are no actors worth watching in a crappy movie.
I get the point but I think QT is jumping the gun a bit. Movie stardom is waning, and marvel isn't doing them any favors, but what about Tom Holland? that dude absolutely pulls people into theaters that they wouldn't already be going to. Actors should be on the same level as the people who bring those characters to life; the writer, director, costume artist, fx artist, etc. All contribute to make the character believable. So why does the actor is the only one who becones a star?
Always strange reading essay manifestos from randoms on socialmedia
Because at the end of the day as a society we value the “communicators.” The ones who take all that, and make it “work” for us the watchers/listeners/consumers. It’s the same with music. But what Tarantino is trying to get at here is something that's been going on since long before Marvel started the MCU. Hollywood started the drift away from being driven by the actors name decades ago. My friend and I have been debating about it for over 20 years because he's into the old school acting formula with theater style over-acting. He's a huge fan of Captain Kirk and Chatner. Clearly he's wrong or these people wouldn't be doing other massively successful movies. Chris Pratt in the Jurassic world movies, Chadwick Boseman in 21 bridges, Chris Hemsworth in Extraction, Jeremy Renner in the Bourne movie and Mayor of Kingstown, Chris Evans in Knives out and Grey Man.
They're obviously great actors and are doing a lot more than just Marvel.
This doesn’t disprove his point. He’s not saying that these actors don’t still get cast in big movies, just that they themselves aren’t a draw for audiences the way that past movie stars have been.
@@pieceofwheat Again, that's not true. They are the draw a lot of the time. That's the reason most people went to see the movies I listed is because of the main actor.
@@R3fug333 I would have to disagree with you about that. Obviously Tarantino knows infinitely more about the movie business that either of us, so I would tend to take his word on these things.
@@pieceofwheat Lol what? Sure, he knows how to make a good movie, but that doesn't mean he's right about everything. If he said "The Godfather is a bad movie" would you agree with him just because he made more movies than you? What an odd way of thinking.
People went to see jurassic world because its a Legendary franchise whether or not Chris Pratt is in it makes no diffrences...so just by your First example you are wrong.
Chadwick boseman in 21 bridges ? How many in a box office ? How many people saw it ,is it as much as any black panther movie in term of money ?
Jeremy renner made one bourne movie and it didnt work as well as Matt damon bourne trilogy ?
Again does knives out and the gray man are movie who does as much as captain America ?? Of course not , so chris Evans is only a Superstar when he's captain america.
I think you didnt understand what Tarantino was saying 😂
I think RDJ is the only one of them who actually gives a real performance as an actor.
Samuel L Jackson?
Benedict Cumberbatch?
Yep, I had not thought of it that way, but QT nailed it.
No, he didn't.
Chris Evans.
Chris Hemsworth.
Robert Downey Jr.
Scarlett Johansson.
Mark Ruffalo.
Tarantino needs to stfu and go look at feet pics.
@BongSabre what are you gonna do if tarantino doesn't STFU?
@@BongSabreyah, he’s painting all the actors from marvel movies with the same brush. The phenomenon he’s referencing has existed for decades. There are some actors whose character are more well known than they are. This is nothing new.
Absolutely right. There's a difference between an iconic actor and an iconic character. Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Sandra Bullock and Tom Cruise and a whole lot more isn't specifically tied to just a single famous character but their whole reputation and entertainment presence that made them big.
Scarlet Johansson, Anthony Hopkins, Cate Blanchet, Samuel Jackson. Yeah, they were nobodies before. Lol
That’s not what he saying. You confusing famous with stardom.
A classic typecasting definition
This clip should be edited together with that "Billy on the Street"-clip when he's joined by Chris Evans who they introduce to a dude on the street who has no idea who he is and starts walking away until Billy says "Captain America?!" and the dude just freaks out and turns around like "oh shit" as Billy goes "TOO LATE!"

Leo DiCaprio Tom cruise and Henry cavil are movie stars to me. I like them in most of their films
Tom Cruise is a cool guy, but Tom Cruise is always only ever playing Tom Cruise, guy has zero range, not really. I like Cruise because he's a cool dude, but I'm not going out of my way to watch a Cruise movie. But I will keep an eye open for RDJ movies, in the same way I keep my eyes open for something with Pacino in it, even though that guy's ancient. Scent of a Woman and Devil's Advocate were just splendid. But DiCaprio? Definitely an excellent actor, Cavill? He's good. But his range either seems to be kind-hearted jock or brooding stoic warrior.

I for one do not cry over a reduction in celebrity culture
It's changed from celebrating talent to celebrating a multi-billion dollar franchise, I'm a marvel fan but it's true that the way things used to be was probably better
@@drbanana1535Nah if anything, it's better for us, the audience, now than it was then. Before studios could bank on a big name celebrity like Schwarzenegger or Stallone to sell whatever movie they wanted, regardless of its quality. But now, the characters they're working with have pre-established fanbases, and have had them for decades. If the actor portraying the character isn't good enough or doesn't fit the role, people won't be distracted by their name alone, they'll also look at their actual performance/talent
@@Unknownigen well many big names only get big because of their talent. I feel like with superhero movies we don't really care if the actor is good or not, because we came to see the superhero, not the performance. It doesn't matter if Tom Holland is a good actor or not, because either way we're going to the theatre to watch spiderman and are going to judge the movie on its story and fanservice, not the acting quality
You know.....there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. It helps the audience stay captivated in the world of the film and be fully immersed. If you're suddenly aware of a famous actor/actress in a role, that will momentarily take you out and back into reality for a few seconds. It ruins the flow of immersion
You are one of those chosen children that doesn't know there's a real like actor playing his favorite character he's watching on screen... I got bad news about Santa and the tooth fairy, for you too, little Man...

So in the past year I have asked About 8 different people who are actually movie fans about Chris Hemsworth and they had no idea who I was talking about until I told them the "its the thor guy"... Where is if you ask somebody who Tom Cruise or the rock is they know exactly who you're referring to... Sure these actors have developed small little micro fan basis.. But by-and-large Tarantino is absolutely right here
@InshaneMedia I personally don't know anyone who doesn't know the name.
I have never heard of a Chris Evan movie going phenomenally good in the box office other than captain America
Lmao where were you for Chris Evans’ “Before We Go?”
$483,938 at the box office. Ouch.
Chris Evans & Chris Hemsworth are not known outside of the MCU.
Idk if I agree with this one. Some MCU actors are definitely movie stars bigger than just their marvel characters
No, like we all saw what happened with Dr dolittle
There isn’t one that is a star. Even RDJ isn’t attracting people to his films just because he’s in it
Even RDJ ain't shit anymore. He's basically Cillian Murphy's side character now. Which I can understand Murphy is a better actor. So maybe MCU is just telling us which actors just aren't that good. Unless your Anthony Hopkins who is just doing it for the money
You do realise that rdr had an extensive career before iron man? He's still extremely watchable, he doesn't need to work because he earned ridiculous money being a superhero. I'm looking forward to Sherlock Holmes 3.
The only movies i saw of RDJ other than iron man was Sherlock Holmes and he literally played tony stark init. Plus was not a great sherlock movie
The thing about the MCU is that almost every actor they cast was already a huge star to begin with, and that what made the Avengers so special.
Whenever I see these clips I think this is the definition of Old and Out of Touch. He made some iconic movies take the dub, but some talking down on these wildly successful movies
It’s called typecasting and it’s been around forever. Granted it’s easier to do in a massive franchise where they put on a superhero suit. But there have always been actors who were had a small range in Hollywood, sometimes by choice and sometimes because that’s the only role they could get.
RDJ got to shine as a MOVIE STAR in Oppenheimer

He’s actually got a point.
The people who go see the Marvel movies are not people who will go see Chris Evans or Chris Hemsworth in other things. They go to watch the character they play.
They go to the MCU films to watch the superhero, not the actor.
Nothing against Chis Evans, he’s a great actor who plays in some good films, but his name doesn’t get people in seats. Neither does Chris Hemsworth.
Funny thing is I’ve had to tell people who he is by saying, he played Captain America. “Oh… yeah, he was in Knives Out. I didn’t remember his name but I knew he was the guy who played Captain America.”
Quentin just discovered type-casting.
That is not the point here, Arnold for example is absolutely typecast a lot and he is a star.
This doesn't have to do with anything that was being said. Take an L.
@@zoomingbyit does. You just don’t get it.
There's truth to that, as how the hell did spider man no way home earned 2 billion dollars as the overall plot was so lame and stupid as hell. But that worked coz every one was hyped for other spidermen to come
Shut up
Exactly... That movie worked only because of the nostalgia factor and nothing else!! The plot was so fuckin lame,it might've been one of the worst MCU movies out there...
It worked because of tobey maguire and Andrew Garfield as spiderman.
Because of their characters
At the same time, movies have always drawn inspiration or complete stories from books or real life events. So, the reason they do so well is yes, it's our comic book heroes and villians brought to life. But, it's also that it usually has great casting and we want to see that actor/actress play the role.
This is why people do Leo Dicaprio, Brad Pitt, Keanu Reeves, Tom Cruise, etc even Nolan, Tarantino, Fincher Movie marathons! Because they want to see their Stuff. Not 'many' people do RDJ, Chris,Hemsworth etc. marathons.
People who are disagreeing and saying mcu skyrocketed their career n shit didn't even get the point. And you cant say majority of the mcu chars were stars before MCU coz for starterd I Never knew them before marvel and many other people will agree. Some of you may have but that doesn't make them stars. Does it mean they cannot be stars? Ofc not. Theu just have to do more movies that catches attention
The story should be the star.
Characters make stories and franchises.
The actors bring the characters to life. No one can think of a better Tony Stark than RDJ. Or Captain America than Chris Evans.
Sorry Quentin, but you can’t just undermine the performances because you don’t like the movies.
But there is truth to what he’s saying. Take Stallone for example. He was able to bring two iconic characters to life with Rambo and Rocky, but he was so big of a star…he made tons of other films that people wanted to see that had nothing to do with his most famous characters. He made Cobra, Lock Up, Tango and Cash, Demolition Man, Cliffhanger, Daylight, Cop Lamd, and now his fourth Expendables movie. His career has spanned almost 50 years! Only time will tell, but most likely the only star of Marvel that will have that long of a career is RDJ, but even Hemsworth will fall by the way side. He’s great, but after Thor…he’s not really doing much except Netflix movies and I like him as an actor. He’s no Stallone though.
To be fair, whoever saw Anthony Hopkins as anything other than Hannibal Lecter after SOTL? I'm mean, typecasting is a real thing.
Chris Evans, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Kurt Russell, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Tom Holland, RDJ, Anthony Mackie, Benedict Cumberbatch... and that's just Marvel.
Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Ben Affleck and Kevin Costner from DC.
I'd say that they're movie stars.
And you’d be wrong. Hence most of them have had many major flops since marvel and DC hired them.
All 3 of the chris's have been in many additional films since their marvel breaks, as well as tom holland and bautista. Tons of people go to movies just for hemsworth. Scarjo, rdj, renner, sam jackson, martin freeman, paul rudd and cumberbach were already stars and continue to be. He is just upset that these movies can make more money than films that actually have something to say. Its nuts to say they aren't stars. Most of them draw crowds just from their name and half the cast were already stars before their mcu appearance
Additional roles but none of them as successful as their Marvel roles because they are not the stars their characters are. Recently RDJ said Ironman destroyed his reputation, Antony McKee said a similar thing to Tarantino about movies stars and everything Tom Holland has done besides Spiderman has floped.
Also many of the actors you mention were already famous before Marvel.
Most of the people you mention were already famous before Marvel. Also all of them have done work after Marvel but none of that work has been as successful as their Marvel movies because they are not the stars their characters are. Everyone wants to see Tom Holland in Spiderman but anyone wants to see him in Cherry.
Robert Downey Jr was definitely likeable as both Sherlock and his character in Tropic Thunder though.
He was a star before iron man though. He was already a very well known proven actor. After he got in trouble iron man just reignited his career,
Why choose wolverine at the end? Hugh Jackman is immensely famous. like 1 of the few major exceptions with another example being robert downie jr.
“Keanu reeves isn’t a star, Neo is.” Bruh
👺I AM AN FBI AGENT
You mean Ted "Theodore" Logan?
He talks about Marvel movies and you use Matrix as your example? At least stay on topic
I mean even after 24 year later people link keanu with the matrix, now it's john wick for the newer audiences. Look at the first john wick box office it made like just 80 million now look at the fourth movie made 436 million, and many people go to watch john wick kick ass.
And to make my point clear in 2013 keanu starred in 47 ronin and failed at the box office making 150m at the box office on 170m budget, in 2015 right after the first john wick movie he starred in a movie called knock knock it was really bad one alsp bombed at the box office making 6.3m. He made a couple of bad movies in between like repilicas and bill & ted face music, none of them are good, the only good movies it did good was his john wick movies
for me the 70s-90s is the time for real World Stars. Arni, Sly, Willis, Murphy, Pacino, De Niro etc....
Personally, I think the only movie star that was very famous before making any marvel movie was Robert Downey, Jr.
I'm all for marvel slander but this not even remotely true
Chris Evans played Johnny Storm in the original Fantastic Four movies, if you might remember.
We won’t go into the non-starring roles like Jeff Bridges, Tommy Lee Jones, or Natalie Portman, to list a few. Admittedly, RDJ was famous for his Heroin-Boy saga, as well as being one of the best actors of his generation.
name one movie pre-Iron Man. I'm a fan of his acting but even I don't know him that much in other movies. If anything he's being wasted
less than zero,back to school.
I see what he's getting at. OGs have a different perspective of "cinema" compared to younger folks we just see them as movies
Awe what a terrible shame that people who say lines of dialogue that other people write are no longer put on pedestals in our society... Oh the humanity!!!
Nowhere did he say that celebrities should be put on pedestals. He's just stating facts about how things have changed over time. And you also fail, apparently, to see the deleterious effect of what a loss of star power means for movies and budgets and cinema; and it's not a good thing. And simmer down, not everything has to be turned into a social justice issue.
The character should be the focus… he writes characters, he knows this.
A few exceptions still exist. Robert Downey Junior, Scarlet Johansson, Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, Mathew McConaughey, Margot Robbie, Willem Dafoe, Nick Cage, Pedro Pascal are just a few names that come to mind that can still carry a movie
I got to know who Robert Downey Jr. is through Iron man movies. I've got to know Tom Holland, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Prat, Chris Evans, Ryan Reynolds. All those have amazing movies in other genres as well.
And still. Did you watched Tom Holland on others movies outside of Spiderman? Most likely not. They are famous but they are not stars.
"Everyone fell in love with Sandra Bullock"

Characters should be more important than actors.
For you
@@seewhativescene No that is just reality.
Yes and no actors shouldnt be held down to one franchise they still need unique roles.
For example christian bale he is like a shape shifter he can sell the actual characters and not play himself in each role.
The main things that sucks is if a movie star is only playing the same character or role in every film instead of taking risks.
I prefer great characters to movie stars. I think Tarantino is just talking from nostalgia, watching the digitalization and depersonalization of cinema. But it's just change.
Tarantino is in the wrong here. The actors made the characters stars. Just take a look at the previous hulk movies. Mark Ruffalo made Hulk a star, even Edward Norton couldn't do it. And yeah what RDJ has done with Ironman will be part of history.
To be honest after watching the actors in Avengers I went all out trying to catch up on the movies of them. That's how I found out Chaplin and I was intrigued to watch Foxcatcher. And yeah I watched X men and Nolan Batman before I went ahead with Prestige.
So to write them as not movies or by reducing the actors as "non stars" I feel it is petty on his part. Same goes for Martin Scorsese. It is like bigwigs of silent era dismissing the success of talkies.
Yes, they are just old dudes that can't understand the brilliance of Antman Quantumania, Madam Web and Morbius.

The only thing more tired than super hero movies is directors giving their negative takes on super hero movies.
It's true. I watched Miss Congeniality because I like Sandra Bullock. I can't think of a single movie I've watched because one of the Marvel actors starred in it. I like a lot of the Marvel movies too
Tarantino has a real god complex
Oh absolutely he does. All of the Marvel actors have great careers besides the Marvel stuff and even Disney is toning it down with the releases.
Quinton is at the end of his career, and is doing what old cranky men do. Bitch about young men succeededing.

Toby McGuire as Spider-Man, he’s the star, I can’t see anyone else play that part. Both can exist
yeah but these actors are playing hugely popular and loved characters that have been around for 30 years before their careers even started, characters who have an entire life of deep backstory, not just written for the movie in 6 months..
I think people wanted to see Wolverine to begin with, but then it became that people wanted to see Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.
The rest i completely agree with
Double edged knife. It also means directors and studios can't put out hot garbage and expect a return based on the star power of the actors involved.
Spoiler alert, they’re releasing garbage based on the characters that are starring in it
A good example of an actor portraying a character correctly is joker. Phoenix did a fantastic job with his role is a solid film that could essentially be considered a character study. It's dark and gritty obviously more tuned for mature audiences. Marvel has good actors, and the roles are fitting, but with how they handle plots the main focus is what can the character add to the actor not vise versa while maintaining a kid friendly record to garner the attention of children and therefore the parents who fall in line.
That's oversimplifying it, if you put any other actor in those roles it won't work. Just ask any 90s or 00s actors who played those characters and were very unsuccessful. Does anyone remember Ed Norton as Hulk, and Reb Brown as Captain America?
RDJ and Sam Jackson are legit stars as well not just Thor and Captain America. Their all great.
