Living on the Edge - The Hardest ROM Hack Ever!!!

- Finally, after two months of work, I have finished my 200 Subscriber Special!! For this milestone I decided to make the hardest ROM hack ever, so I made a level that went beyond pit difficulty! Have fun in the deadliest hell hole you will never attempt because watching it done on RUclips is way cooler!

The beauty of this level is that one can only truly know how difficult it is if one is an avid romhack player. From the outside looking in, this might seem like a modded SMW game that allows walljumps or something LOL

agree. seeing how every single jump, juggle, and glitch *has* to be pixel-perfect drives me insane. i'd like to see a real person try this though. juzcook, ryu, dram (maybe barb... but he became lame)

ignoring the question if the previous comment realized he was replying to the uploader; NO, isn't necessarily obvious from the video, to people who've never heard of TAS. Having a term in the description they're ALSO not familiar with, doesn't change that. Not trying to be a dick, it's just very easy to forget not everyone is familiar with or even aware of 'your' particular sub-sub-community. In this case, they're just going to respond "This isn't real, you suck", not realizing what goes in to making this, or even what the point was in the first place. That would be a shame.

OmikronWeapon Well, yeah, I guess, but that's a shame for the uploader. As I said, it could have been advertised better, but simply "TAS" is also jargon, while that's how most RUclips videos refer to it exclusively. There's no way to win.

Income Tax It's called blockclipping, if you jump on a block at the right angle (and speed i think) you're clipping through it. The game is programmed to push you to the left then and so you get clipped through the blocks.

This hack isn't the hardest pit hack. There are plenty that are harder. IA3. ColonThree. GA3.
It is a very detailed and save-state oriented technique. You must be holding a key, drop it, land on it (since it's considered a platform), and jump while pressing the grab button to grab the key again while jumping. To get to infinite distances, simply rinse and repeat this process while avoiding death in this level.
This level of nerdiness is so off the charts, it should get you laid

2:35 key bicycle. Samus has space jump, and Mario has a key, and they both function the same way. I can never run out of things to say about this level.

He was using a TAS(Tool-Assisted Speedrun/Superplay). There was no skill involved.
Even with TAS, you still have to beat the level, it's not like it does it for you.

funny dog man you know that there is way more involved in tasing. Its not only frame advance. You have to know smw very well to beat this hack even with frame advance and savestates
I think the best way to gauge the true difficulty of this level is by looking at the inputs in the bottom left corner. Just look at the inputs while he builds up momentum on that small platform using spin jumps. The amount of precise inputs used in just one of those spin jumps is absolutely absurd. Now imagine doing those exact inputs as many times in a row as it's done in the video and that's only the START of this level's difficulty. This level is just obscene, no matter what way you look at it.

I was obsessed with watching these videos when I was a kid and wanting to make my own level. Then the first Mario maker came out and I kind forgot all about rom hacks.

This kind of hacks are too pretty to watch in a gameplay and all, and I know someone will complain about this comment (someone always have to complain at everything), but you have to admit that, from a game developing perspective, those hacks are way too stupid.
Think about it. Who wants to play a game that require machine-alike command input precision, and exploit all short of glitches that most people don't even know?
Me! And i think it's probably fun for some of the devs to watch their games still getting attention after 20 years.
not the general populace. people with TAS equipment, and/or the fanatical dedication to a particular game. I love Mario enough to DL this ROM hack, fail at it for 10 straight minutes, and then watch better people play it
Hmmm, not sure if you two got what I said right. The problem is... you can't beat these kinds of hacks, unless you do what is commonly known as a "Tool Assisted gameplay", which requires an emulator that can slow down the game, go frame by frame so you can input the commands in the right exact frame, save the state of the machine at any point, etc etc.
In other words, watching those gameplays (Or rather TAS), are very pretty. Like, god damn it! I wish I could play like that! And they make it look like if it were possible, but... in the truth, you can't. With a bit of luck you may be able to beat the hack without the frame-perfect command inputs, but you still need to abuse of the savestates, a lot.
If instead of a hack, this was the original game, probably Nintendo would have gone bankrupt. Nobody would want to buy a game, that can't be beaten normally (without cheating). Of course, Nintendo would never release such a thing, but it's a supposition.
And that's why I said that, from a game developing perspective, those kind of hacks are stupid. I'm not saying they are bad or anything, in fact they are OK (you don't pay for them and if you don't want to play them, you just don't have to), they are also pretty to watch, when someone makes a decent TAS like this one, but... I bet you get the point now.
RUclips Spy No, I still don't get it. You are saying it looks pretty to watch so you pretty much answered your own question. You also asked who would want to do TAS of a game hack. Well.... there is an enormous TAS community and there is a pretty big rom hack community so there are a lot of people that want to do both of those things. Then there are people who just like to watch the finished product. Its the very definition of art. So no, I don't get what you're saying at all. It's not stupid in any sense to me and thousands of other people.

The "16th pixel" actually is misleading, because it is not really important. The horizontal position and speed of Mario is much more important than his vertical position or speed in order to perform a wallcatch.
You need speed 33 because you are gonna get inside the wall for a while. It's important to have a good x_position because the wall starts to push you based on it.

From 2:13 to 2:28 Mario shows that really knows how to defy gravity and the laws of physics with a key.

While the video is cool and all, I'd like to see a genuinely difficult Mario World hack that doesn't have a single muncher or invisible block. Because every hack and its mother spams munchers/chompers absolutely everywhere.

I know one way to make it harder: lower the time limit to around 173 seconds so that you'll have barely any time to spare when you beat it. Still an awesome level!

That may be, but the glitches MMD requires are MUCH easier, none requiring frame advance or LUA script. Just savestates, and probably slowdown are required. Also, there's the fact that I can beat the levels in MMD. I can only do the most basic wall-jumps, while LotE requires a complete mastery of all kinds of hard glitches.
Have you watched ColonThree yet? That makes this look like a tutorial level.

i'ver so much respect for people like this, i've played smw a very very often times with all 96 levelendings and the lavajump in that on dinocastle after the woods but hell even with quicksave/load and slowmotion i couldn't do things like that... O,ô

at first i didnt know t was a TAS or not lol but then u did the crouch enter door thing and well that explains it
@astarothgr It's a glitch referred to as wall jumping. Mario's foot basically semi-clips into the wall and with very precise button pushing, you can jump like you were jumping off the block.
any skilled taser can perform every trick in that hack with only slow down and rerecords. however, my hack requires frame advance at most points, in addition to some randomness at points that make it extremely hard.
26062 save states used in less than 3 minutes of game.
That's insane.

Well I still think, even if you don't, I'd like to see someone else make a hack of this standard with a bunch of rooms like IA. I have a couple creative ideas, but not enough for a hack, and I probably couldn't test them with my level of skill.
