Echidna's daily baths

  • This short-beaked echidna turns up every day for his bath; snorkelling, soaking, snoozing and scratching in peaceful bliss. Echidnas are amazing monotremes - egg-laying mammals. The female echidna lays a single soft-shelled, leathery egg and deposits it directly into her pouch. Hatching occurs 10 days later and the baby echidna, (called a puggle) then sucks milk from the milk pores of the pouch (monotremes have no nipples) and remains in the pouch for up to 55 days. If you think they really can't get any stranger, well they can; male echidnas have a four-headed penis. During mating, it alternates heads in sets of two.

    I understood this echidna. How many times have any of us gotten into a bathtub or hot tub and started to doze! lol He thought it was his own, personal bathtub!
    I know some animals will go into water when they are infested with fleas.
    The fact that he was bathing in it, can other animals smell him in the water and not want to drink it?

    • @GubanaNatureRefuge
      @GubanaNatureRefuge  3 года назад +2

      Hello KG, the magpie definitely didn't look impressed with the new water flavour ;)
      The echidna seems to do a lot of scratching in the water, and leaves behind some quills from time to time, so I think you might well be right about the parasites.

    • @GubanaNatureRefuge
      @GubanaNatureRefuge  3 года назад +2

      Hello Amanita, you are on the right track of thought there - echidnas and platypus are the only surviving examples of the mammalian subclass called monotremes, which is one of the three main groups of living mammals - the other 2 groups being placentals (Eutheria) and marsupials. The spikes are actually long, tough, hollow hair follicles, but they sure don't look or feel like it!
