I found it didn’t help in any way 😅 but was psychologically helpful in the sense that I believed it would help. On the plus side, I didn’t feel my son come out at all and didn’t notice him on me until he was looking for milk 😂. I had such an interesting delivery experience. Only felt pain after…now almost 40 weeks with second baby so about to go through the whole experience again!
I would use it when you need an extra layer of coping. I'd start with other methods like breathing, movement, water, rhythm, music, etc. When those aren't enough then I'd add laughing gas.

Do you use it as soon as the contractions start or is best used when you reach somewhere 6 to 9cm?
