Thanks for sharing! The first thing that came to my mind to make the pump be *MUCH* quieter is to firmly attach a container filled with loose lead shot to the pump itself, then isolate the pump + weight from the structure of the van with foam cushion/very flexible fuel line/etc. That will *DRASTICALLY* reduce vibrations being amplified. Another route is to pick up one of these actual silent pumps that a fellow in the UK makes: ruclips.net/video/HOVVoKN5sms/видео.html (Email to contact the maker in the description.)
      Cheers!

The ticking sound is being transmitted via longitudinal waves along those hard plastic Diesel tubes/hoses. If you want to avoid this you need to build a loop at input and output and hang the pump loosley together with those loops so it can swing freely.

Just watched your vid. I think the new pump may be a few dB quite, but the bigger difference in sound comes from the frequency/pitch. The old pump was definitely lower in hz, lower frequencies travel farther and are also felt more than higher frequency sounds at the same dB level. Best of luck.....Cheers!

Nice work and good to see you got a result. If possible, I recommend placing the fuel metering pump outside the van - on the underside close to the fuel tank. And as Johannes said, it's also about hard surfaces transferring the noise of the magnetically charged piston action. That equates to the rubber mount you have in place for the pump and additionally, soft mounting the hard fuel line leading from the pump to the heater injector. This hard fuel line cannot be substituted for a soft line on the discharge side of the pump, as its hardness maintains the pump pressure - so your stuck with that. On the safety side of things, I'd also recommend not placing the heater in a location that obscures direct access to, or sight of the unit (often caused by attempts to isolate the noise of the fuel pump by enclosing the unit) and have a serviceable fire extinguisher within the van at all times. Thanks for the good work and keep them coming.

I suspended my standard pump under the van from a short piece of thick rubber (a peice of a floor squeegee) about 4" long and, once it reached temperature, you just can't hear it at all inside the van, not even in the dead of night! Even when its getting up to temperature the clicking is only faint. I can send pics if interested?

Hi Mel...by their design it's a metal piston twacking against a metal face to get the dose, you'll always get a tick until they change the design and maybe put a rubber(or something) face inside the pump, I have mine mounted underneath my van, suspended on thin rubber bungees, so much quieter inside 👍 Great vid to start discussions 🤙

Excellent video Mel 👍, I recently fitted one this Chinese heaters, not had the chance to test it in the field yet but I will use your suspension method and make a sound deadening box to enclose the pump.
I personally don’t think that green pump is worth the £30 as to my ear the sound is still quite loud.
The genuine German/Russian built units must have a much better designed pump with no metal to metal contact.

Hi Mel, it is a tad quieter, but I wouldn't say 'ultra' quiet and certainly not £30 quieter. Although the ticking didn't bother me too much in my T4, I experimented with sound insulation. The best method I found is to build a box out of 20mm softwood big enough for the pump to fit in and pack it loosely with that cheap foam flooring underlay. Then I hung the box with rubber cords scavenged from an old bungee. By the way, your lighting is much better.

Definitely quieter. For those interested in quieting the motor by boxing it in remember density is what deadens sound. A metal or plasterboard box will deaden the sound far more than any kind if foam or fibre. Pvc is surprisingly good too, and of course suspend rather than fix to any solid surface.

I know it's not recommended, but my solution has worked for the last 3 years and I can barely hear the pump. It is just to replace that stiff fuel line with model aircraft silicone rubber tubing all the way up to the short back hose that comes with the pump. The pump is suspended with silicon fuel line rubber as well. Once my enclosure is replaced it's peace no ticking. My fuel run is 2 meters. Keep up the good work.👍👍

Wrap bubble wrap around the pump, put the wrapped pump in a box and fill the box with expanding foam. Then fix the box to the wall with screws going through rubber grommets. If the pump ever needs changing you can just pull of the foam off and the pump will still be clean inside the bubble wrap.

Hi Mel the pump noise also resonates along the hard nylon fuel pipe... So anything the pipe touches also amplifies the noise!
This is best damped by sleeving both pump and pipe in soft foam pipe insulation such as armour flex and not P clipping it to the van structure! Try it!

I wrapped my drinking water pump in my sprinter with foam from a thick yoga mat. It quieted it a lot. I would do the same with yours.

I ended up wrapping that recycled rag insulation around pump then dropped down inside box housing above heater. Only at night when quiet could i hear pump, but not usually on.

Mel, I got to say. I do love watching your videos. They are entertaining and informative. What I really want though…..where can I get a pair of those fancy pants your wearing? Comfort and function in one package? 😂

I apologize for prejudiced comment that assumed this video was like other YT "how-to's". Indeed, this is the rare useful video, although the first six minutes is throwaway. Also consider editing out the brief idle bits. Well done in any case.

Yeah I'd say it is definitely a higher pitched ticking and less vibration probably , I was thinking would it be possible to create a sound proof box using the stuff they use in sound recording studios to box the pump in or is that to much off a faff .
Anyway your video quality and presentation is so good now Mel , you could present on telly lol 😆
    Take care Glenn

Definitely quieter Mel. I would think it is worth the money if you are living in your van, but as a weekend and holiday user I don't think its worth changing mine. Thanks for some Great advice again though. Cheers 👍👍

Definitely more quiet. Discant up noise is more around than old knocking. Also the bottom sound is lighter with thinner ambience!

Build a box for it too maybe?? With some fancy sound proof material? 🤔

New pump does sound like a ticking clock but I’d imagine that when it’s outside the van it would be loads better still.
    Great video,as per usual
I’ve had my Chinese diesel heater for at least 4 years now and it’s been a game changer, first winter/Hogmanay I went away with the van it was freezing outside and shorts and T shirt weather inside, I try get away on my days off and having the heater makes it so much more enjoyable.

Going by your audio clip, I will agree the clicking isn't as sharp as before. Therefore, I'd call this a success!

You can get these pumps for half that price. There are covers available for these pumps too, that help deaden the sound and also protect the pump if mounting on the underside of the vehicle.

All good ideas! Could you wrap the pump in the same rubber/foil baking the pump lies against to make it even quieter?

I would mont in an electrical junction wrapped in vinyl masc or heavy grade carpet underlay it would be effective.
