    I stuck mine in a mayonnaise jar, used cable glands at either end for fuel lines and sealed a slit for wiring with silicone...then filled the jar with sand. Then wrapped the whole package in insulation. Good to go. Can barely hear it.

    I switched over to the Green type pump last year and there is a noticable difference .
    I also suspended the pump underneath my campervan in what could be described as a spider's web of thick elastic, all fuel line is wrapped in foam anywhere it touches the bulkhead.
    I now sleep soundly. 👍

    James' pump is brilliant. If you want quiet pumping for a diesel heater then that's the one to get. I've had mine for a couple of years now and after changing my diesel heater it needed to be wired a different way. Even after the length of time I have had my pump, James still gave me support and the pump was re-wired within 30 minutes. Excellent pump and brilliant support from James. Well worth the investment. Can't thank him enough and love the videos from David - they have been very helpful!

    Hi Dave thanks to you I connected James after your first vid.
    The pump is excellent and more importantly guys like him should be encouraged and supported. Hidd so pump Cost is quite insignificant compared to cost of a full van build.

    I’ve requested this before after seeing another comment on one of your videos suggesting it, but I’d just like to suggest again trying running the pump submerged in the diesel. I suppose I should just try it myself but I’d rather someone else risk their pump😁. Thanks David for making this useful content like you do.

    Thank you as always . I think testing at low pump speed and mid speed would be useful as users requirements are different. I'm particularly interested in encasing the pump in silicone, and also one reviewer recommended encasing in a bottle of sand. It's a case of finding the best sound deadening material for the required pump speed.

  • @bigoldgrizzly
    @bigoldgrizzly Год назад +4

    What constitutes 'sound' and what is classed as 'noise' are very different. Sound can be measured and analysed whereas noise is a very subjective thing and, not only different for any two people, but also to one's self under different circumstances. My best way of defining 'noise' is 'any sound that is not wanted or tolerated at any point in time' If you are in a workshop or concentrated on other things, you will hardly notice the pump at all. If you've had one too many coffees and are trying to get to sleep on a quiet night, it could sound like a jackhammer. Once the brain locks onto a sound and labels it 'noise' it will start to concentrate on this and block out everything else. Then it becomes a problem for 'you' though might not bother the missus sleeping next to you
    The more you try different things to quieten it, the more your brain will tend to amplify what sound is actually there [even if it measures less] and it could easily become an obsession .
    For me... Fairly quiet pump in a van and couldn't give a monkeys in the workshop

    Great test! I don't find the normal pump that bad, because there is already so much fan noise. I could see if this was remotely mounted and the pump was near somewhere you sit, it could get annoying. Really cool that the nicer pump is actually almost totally silent!

  • @ziggystardog

    Could be interesting to have a spectral analysis of the audio. To my ears the “silent” pumps have more low frequency components that could be easier to damp out with other methods. The stock one seems more tinny and clanging.

    3db is over a 50% noise reduction. I'd say it's a good buy. Along as it lasts and delivers the same amount of fuel. For all we know they just took the standard pump and put 2 o rings on either side of the cylinder so it would pump less fuel with each stroke. Or maybe it's a rubber that will degrade with fuel.
    But assuming it's fine that should be a good purchase. It seems significantly quieter. And any good mounting on the standard one does a pretty good job already. I'm sorta interested if the more exspensive mufflers that arnt straight through but look almost identical are worth it. The exsaust sound isn't the most pleasant for tent camping.

SO if you live somewhere very cold and need to run heater at a higher speed definitely worth purchasing the green quieter type.

      If I run a diesel heater in the workshop (properly tuned), it produces about the same CO as my Fireball diesel heater (which recommends ventilation) which is supposed to be used indoors. It registers on the Fireangel CO meter, but it has a proper exposure vs time gauge and the diesel heaters never make it to dangerous levels. Compared to a petrol generator which will set off the CO alarm within minutes.
      A lot of people forget that it's exposure over time. A little CO over a long time will not kill you. A lot of CO in a short time will.

    apparently the older you get the deafer you get, so dont buy a diesel heater until you reach your 60s 😂 my diesel heater is out side on the wall of the house inside a plywood custom built wall cupboard inside that cupboard is a small plywood box with the pump mounted inside hanging by 4 loops of 6mm bungee cord (available from B&Q) it is very quiet at different settings the higher the setting the less you hear it indoors, around 3.5 to 3.8 Hz is the best and 1.7 hz is the worst, the sound seems to come through the cavity wall in the hot air stream, not a lot can be done about that except for turning the TV up slightly louder. its a bit of a trade off but bearable if you want to keep warm cheaply hacking 40 quid a week of the gas bill makes me tolerate the pump tick and I just turn the heater off before bed.

      This new one is going into my house instead of paying nearly two hundred dollars for a six by four trailer of firewood which will last about five weeks if I'm lucky

    So, the silent in the box with the knob. Has to be adjusted all the time, or just once to pair it to the settings of the heater? if it's set it and forget it, then it's absolutely not worth getting any other alternative tested. You can tweak the installation as much as you want, on the standard pumps, but you shouldn't have to. It shouldn't a masters degree in mounting a pump to shut it up.

      @DavidMcLuckie  Год назад

      The knob is just for ultra fine tuning. James sets them up depending what size pump/heater you are replacing.

    You’ve missed a trick. Nuts? How far can these be taken apart to clean? Can see nuts! I’ve replaced THREE pumps this year after not using heater over summer. Yes it’s only 30 quid but over 10 years that’s 300 quid. i’d rather clean them. David is it possible to clean those pumps?

    Quiet fuel pumps are not quiet, save your money , suspend the pump in a wood box lined with roofers lead ... total silence

      @michaelhite1433 6 месяцев назад

      That’s what I was thinking. If you take the quiet pump out of its little case, how quiet is it really. On my semi, the pump is outside near the fuel tank and you can barely hear it.

    Kinda surprised no one's developed a gear pump for this application. It would be completely silent and could dose accurately. The only issue would be priming, but that's not exactly an insurmountable engineering challenge.

    • @DavidMcLuckie

      Would need some kind of circuit to translate pulses into a steady voltage output.

    • @GordLamb
      @GordLamb Год назад

      @@DavidMcLuckie oh, ya totally... also some kind of encoder and control circuitry to keep a steady dosing rate, and maybe a special priming mode that runs the pump at super high speed to develop a vacuum. Might try building one this winter. :)

    Hey. I can't find anyone to try this. But I picked up 72 liters of waste veggie oil that has sat to remove water. Then was filtered to 1 micron then was spun in heated centrifuge. The 17 liters I added about a liter of gas and splash of acetone and just shook it. Hopefully shook it enough. Right now it's running my diesel heater. If it keeps going and I run through all 72 liters doing that same mixture I'll check inside for build up. (I know there's some in there from when I was adding waste oil to it last year.
    It's biodiesel. It's not like what people have tried. Oil right off the shelf
    You gotta filter the gunk out that will gum up everything.
