“Savoy Truffle” is literally about a box of chocolates. I think it was Eric Clapton at the time who had dental problems, lots of cavities, but couldn’t stop himself fracturing m devouring a box of chocolates.

If you have not heard them, there are two alternate versions of Revolution 1, both harder, and simply titled, Revolution. The first was released as a single. It is harder and gets rid of the doo-wops. The third version is a live (for TV) performance released as a promotional video for the single. It is harder, like the single, but retains the doo-wops.

He did so well! Too many people who only know popular/ rock music dismiss it, in the same way they dismiss Yoko's performance art, simply because they have no context within which to understand it.
It's less effort to dismiss something than to expand one's conceptual framework.
Classical music buffs do take it seriously, because they understand the genres of classical music it draws upon.

@@StillColour honestly first time i knew it was "good" but i just didnt know what to make of it, took me so off guard, lots of people fall into the "it's just noises!" group & it took me a while to appreciate it but now i really do and im happy it's there (and putting a ringo start lullabye right after it is such an insane way to end an album)

The next Beatles albums to listen to are Rubber Soul released first in December 1965, before the mighty Revolver released only 9 months later in August 1966.
It’s important to see how different they sound between these two albums, as it’s massive.
In fact maybe Help first, as that was released a few months before Rubber Soul in August 1965, and shows the unbelievable development in music as a whole within 1 year.
Absolutely astonishing, and after Revolver you have got Sargent Pepper, that you have reference for as you’ve reviewed that already.
    Help
    Rubber Soul
    Revolver
    And you will be amazed.

after sgt peppers was such a celebrated "concept album" this feels so much like an "anti-concept album" in a way, the songs go from the USSR to love songs to westerns & country to metal and even what Revolution 9 was (in a way how this is an anti concept album, R9 is line an anti-song, challenging what music can even be)
imo its imperfections are what makes it perfect in a way, its a beautiful mess and thats why i love it sm

revolution 9 was johns attempt at a "sound collage" to create the atmosphere of a revolution rather than a song about it (revolution 1), its maybe their most divisive work, some love it and think its genius some hate it and think its a waste of time
in a 1970 interviee John said "Revolution 9 was an unconscious picture of what I actually think will happen when it happens; just like a drawing of a revolution. All the thing was made with loops. I had about 30 loops going, fed them onto one basic track. I was getting classical tapes, going upstairs and chopping them up, making it backwards and things like that, to get the sound effects.”
the number 9 was also John's "lucky number" which is partially why its so prevelant in the track

Most people would say that Revolution 9 is the worst "song" the Beatles ever made. I see it differently. The piece fascinates me more and more the older I get. It was the Beatles' reach into contemporary classical music that saw such attempts at sound collages. Very innovative! No other band has dared to do that.

Revolution 1 isn't a call to arms--it's saying to exercise caution and think before trying to start a revolution. Hence, "If you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao, you ain't gonna make it with anyone anyhow". If anything, it's a song emphasizing a peaceful, grassroots revolution.

People have always loved to hate on #9, but I always liked it (even at 14 when this was new) BECAUSE it’s so weird. Had to figure out what was going on 😏
It is art made of sound. Sound art. Conceptual art was huge at the time and post-modernism (can mix styles) was gaining traction John was exposed to the avant garde art world by Yoko, and it fascinated him.

You should review the companion songs. The singles: Hey Jude and Revolution. The outtakes: Not Guilty and What’s the New Maryjane. (Check out the alternate tracks from the White Album on Anthology 3 disk 1). The demo disk from the White Album which was disk three from the Super Deluxe Edition (SDE). Finally if you want even more Alternate
Tracks from the rest of the SDE.
    Check out Helter Skelter Take
2, Revolution 1 take 18, Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da (the Anthology 3 version take is the completed take). So you can have a couple of more hours of fun.

RUclipsr Hargreaves gives an outstanding explanation of Rev9. I can't distill it down here but one aspect is that the number 9 is Lennon's numerological fav. Another aspect occurring to me was the open revolt John led against George Martin; forcing the group to produce themselves. It was a revolution at EMI! I suspect EMI won, though. The Beatles retreated to their own Magic Alex built studio...which was rubbish.

Wow. You are the only person I've ever seen who enjoyed Revolution number 9, lol. That was always an immediate pick up the needle and skip for me. But that's cool that you're interested from an audio engineering standpoint. I think John had a lot to do with that one, putting the tape together and such.
    Peace

I'm starting to get the feeling that not many people liked it first time 😅😂 I mean like you said for me the audio engineering is next level and the layering wow amazing. When is the last time you listened to revolution 9?

    • @thewizard6077
      @thewizard6077 4 месяца назад

@olour hmmm. That's a good question. The last time I listened to it was definitely when I used to listen to the White Album on vinyl, which would have been in the 1980's sometime. After that, it was either cassette (in the car) or CD. There was another similar sort of "patched together" Beatles song called "You Know My Name, Look Up The Number", but conversely, I loved that one. I think that was on the Rarities album, and then later, Anthology 2. It was also the B Side to the "Let it Be" Single. You should check that one out. It had Brian Jones from the Rolling Stones on the saxophone. He passed away shortly before that one was released.
