  • George Russell's Mercedes seat is not guaranteed according to reports of a similar 1+1 deal to Lewis Hamilton, with Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen on the radar of Toto Wolff. Ferrari will conduct two filming days with the SF-24 at Fiorano ahead of their major upgrade package arriving in Imola.

    Russell is fast enough to be on the grid, and he is getting more consistent. It would be a bad move to move Russell before seeing if a new team member is faster than him, even Max in same car. remember Russell was faster than Lando in F2 so lets not chuck the person out with the sh*t car. Before anyone shouts I'm not a big Russell fan, just being realistic. Spray has always been immense, only thing that has changed is level of risk allowed in F1. I'm no aerodynamicist... but I don't think the tire spray is where the majority of the spray is coming from. The cars are basically sucking it up off the track in the floor and spitting it out of the defuser. It's actually really cool seeing how the water moves around the cars in this era. I'm not saying the tires aren't spraying.. but it really looks like the entire car is just vacuuming up the water and spitting it out the back.

      @craigst6755 Месяц назад +2

      100%. Especially after what happened with NDV. It's not like a Liam Lawson situation where he did pretty well over a few GP's, improving in each I believe.
      Although even the above may be a bit premature, although maybe not if you're red bull with 4 cars/ a sister team.

    • @wingracer1614
      @wingracer1614 Месяц назад +2

      Most of them didn't dominate the little leagues. They won a couple races, maybe even a title here or there but didn't dominate and went on the be crap in F1. The ones that did dominate were people like Hamilton, LeClerc, Verstappen, etc. Those were the guys that dominated. And since those guys went on to be great, people look for young drivers doing that. That is Kimi. You look back at some of his F4 years, he didn't just win the titles. He won the titles by winning 3/4ths of the races. That's why Kimi is getting hype. As for Bearman and Lawson, that's just wishful thinking on the fans part. I mean hell, Kimi is kicking Bearman's ass on the same team in F2 right now.

      I don't follow F2 ATM, but could maybe do with having a look at the results or whatnot between Bearman and Antonelli.
      Isn't their car not that great this year or something?
      Btw, I agree with what you wrote regarding that caliber of driver. There were some others winning on first try, last being Oscar Piastri I think. F2 that is iirc anyway and he's certainly impressed me. A way to go with Deg and things but love his chilled demeanour.

    • @wingracer1614
      @wingracer1614 Месяц назад

      @@craigst6755 Bearman and Lawson are just the new ooh shiny. IMO, they both have the talent to be solid F1 drivers but not champions except in rare circumstances. Of course that's just my opinion and I can certainly be wrong but neither has shown me a "superstar" level drive as yet. It's rare but there have been a few guys that just get better the faster the car gets. Vettel didn't look like a superstar either until he finally got in an F1 car but then he became a star immediately.
      F2 is weird this year because it's a brand new car and some teams are struggling with it, others seem to be on top of it. Prema has been the dominant team for years but are a little behind so far. This has led to some skepticism about Kimi. Usually a good driver lands the Prema seat, he wins the title (Mick Schumacher, Oscar Piastri for two examples) but Kimi has yet to win or even podium. But he and the team have significantly improved each race and Kimi has done something else, absolutely crushed his more experienced team mate every single race. That team mate is Bearman. And people think Bearman should be at Ferrari instead of Hamilton or Sainz or LeClerc? Give me a break. Of course it's very early in the season, who knows how the rest of the year will go but to those that know, Kimi is a top prospect.
      Now has Kimi shown enough to make people confident in him? No of course not. Teams would love to give him more time to develop and be sure about him but if they did that, someone else could take the chance and snatch him up first. Just imagine if RB decided not to give Max that STR seat and someone like Merc had grabbed him instead? Merc would love to put someone like Sainz in Ham's old seat for next year instead and give Kimi another year to develop and get more data for them evaluate about him but if they don't give him the seat or at least make a deal to get him in a Williams or something, they run the risk of him going somewhere else.

    • @craigst6755
      @craigst6755 Месяц назад

      @@wingracer1614 Good points here mate. I agree mostly with a lot of this.
      Lawson and Bearman indeed, they did well but Bearman has only been in the car once, and a clearly second quickest Ferrari in Jeddah. Not saying he did bad or anything given he hopped in with just one FP session, but arguably Lawson may have shown more. Possibly not his first outing but he did have a decent showing in Singapore so I feel a little conflicted about Bearman, especially as his 7th was circumstantial (LH and LN lost out to the SC).
      As you say and I think I saw Antonelli has shown steady improvement in results, but I didn't watch just saw the results and indeed a team like Mercedes will want to secure him ASAP, as they let Max slip through their fingers really, as red bull could offer him a seat in Toro Rosso.
      Also, at least he is showing improvement and the circumstances aren't stacked in his favour if the regs are new and Prema aren't as competitive as usual. What matters is he's beating Bearman soundly. I wouldn't want a team to be led astray again by an NDV situation, which sadly sometimes affects even knowledgeable people from within F1.
      All things considered I agree, it's a tough one to manage, but seems like he's showing promise, so I would be trying to secure a seat somewhere like Williams at minimum for him.
      I'd really like to think though that winning or getting a podium isn't necessarily the best all and end all, and that car performance gets taken into account. So long as Kimi does keep improving his results and beating Bearman soundly, I'd say he's well on his way to proving himself. Also getting some more mileage under his belt asap inan F1 car, I know he had a successful test already with consistent lap times and some practice sessions can be given to him I think, unless he needs clearing to do the young driver test, but I thought they weee applying for special dispensation regardless as he isn't 18 yet.

    The Andretti family (except for Mario) is not liked in the motorsport business. There is a conglomerate attempting to purchase HAAS or Alpine right now to partner with Honda in 2026. If their LOI is not accepted they are in position to obtain a F1 license via a partnership with an established racing team that competes in F2, F3 etc. This conglomerate is liked by Stephano and could be the 11th team.

I get that the car is more important, but finding good drivers is not easy, and Mercedes risk pissing George off AND not getting Max because of the car. @@jeanmakita3839 Exactly. Also they somehow now supposedly are able to offer Max an ambassador role and 150 million or whatever it was.
      Seriously with Toto, what a giant screw you to Lewis, no wonder he left them. I honestly think now that Lewis must have sensed the writing on the wall for him at Merc, probably got the feeling in contract negotiations that there were doubts or whatever, and maybe that's why it took so long last time.
      A 1 + 1 for Russell too, is marginally more understandable, but still nowhere near actually understandable. He's a very good driver, with some edges that need smoothing out maybe but still, there aren't many, or any better options.
      It's becoming harder to support Merc. I had little sympathy last year tbh for them, they didn't change their car. I had more sympathy this year now they changed their car, but then this happens, they built another car that isn't competitive with front runners and still sound lost.
      Then how they act towards drivers and leading fans on that upgrades will work, not hiring any new talent, strategy errors, they still don't deserve to be front runners. Look at Ferrari and McLaren, their pit stops have improved and strategy improved a lot for Ferrari. 1.9s pit stop in Miami I think for Ferrari.
      I am questioning Toto's leadership now as I was never one to say everything was Brawn. That makes no sense and he did well during multiple reg changes, but, now it's hard to be a fan of them when he lets staff go and not replace them with good brains. A shame.

Strange that Mercedes wouldn't give him the chance to be the lead driver once Hamilton has gone. Verstappen might be too tempting for Mercedes, but then it would be ironic that Russell isn't then paired with Verstappen, when Hamilton wasn't afforded that option. Verstappen going to Mercedes still seems a long shot, Russell is probably safe.
