I'm not sure if you understand the full gravity of what happened there, because Grosjean almost lost his life there. This is Indycar, overtakes are generally rougher than in other series, and getting so worked up over an incident that you wish someone to die or have a near death experience again is straight up ridiculous. At that point, you're like those Argentinian Canapino fans who send death threats to whoever doesn't let Canapino past by jumping out of the way.

Newgarden should have been penalized. Play it back at half-speed and decide for yourself. He was pulling away Power and Rossi. He can claim there was an opening on the outside between Scottymac and Herta, but he was straight ahead. Even at half-speed the closing rate was incredible. If that is the excuse for giving him a pass, that he was already on the gas, it is really weak. Hench and Bell chickened out on calling it since it doesn't fit into the narrative of repairing his reputation. Quietly implicit is the notion that Josef is so good he wouldn't make that mistake. What I would like to see is the stewards pulling the telemetry as part of the decision process.

I gotta say, this race was spectacular.
If indycar would avoid ovals completely, they could very well be better than formula 1.
In f1 is garbage strategies and playing it safe and doing anything but racing.
Here we have entertainment, pilot going out left and right, shoving each other, full contact racing.

    • @goodshipkaraboudjan

A year they get caught cheating and Penske sweeps front row at Indy with speeds that are way ahead of other 30 drivers in field and Newgarden wins race. Now a week after all three struggle in Detroit, they finish one, two, three at Road America and fourth place car is way back, pleeaaaassee. Power hadn't won for two years, big deal, some of these guys never win. Newgarden nailed somebody early in race with no penalty. It is like the Penske drivers are owed wins, sickens me. Plus Formula 1 one guys wins about all the time, how is that fun to watch.

An interesting display of high speed bumper cars. An uneducated observer might think there is a lack of respect between the drivers, a lack of overall talent in the series, or with everyone being in spec race cars with the same handling and horsepower, you have to be overly aggressive just to make things happen.

@@retromaniaco_br7422 There were more completely unacceptable driver decisions on turn 1 in this race than the entire F1 race and that was in the wet.
And, Logan Sargeant is a pay driver. Checo is a pay driver. Stroll is a pay driver. Those guys are literally paying tens of millions for their seats, of course they suck. They aren't there for their skill (Checo somewhat excluded). They're there because they have sponsors.

So, was the cheating scandal to open the season revealed, and the individuals punished, nothing more than a smokescreen to cover the rest of the season? How in the world were the three Penske cars over 15 seconds ahead of 3rd, in a spec series? No way Penske spends that much more money than Ganassi or McLaren.
