You ARE my guitar friend Tim. When someone askes "where did you learn that?" I tell them about my friend Tim who teaches me guitar. Then I make them watch their new friend Tim.
Great stuff, Tim! Was just trying to find something on Netflix but decided to watch you instead. ;) I like the fretboard at the bottom better. Much easier to read. Keep at it! :)
Hey man. This was a great video. Love the way you broke down Guthrie's style here. He runs marathons off of those 3rds and 6ths and though he is a good teacher in his own right, you simplify what he is doing better than anyone I have seen so far. Keep it up, you have a follower/subscriber in me for the long haul.
That's so cool to hear - thank you! With a cat like GT, I feel like a National Geographic photographer trying to explain the moves of a cheetah running 60 mph!
I totally agree with the other comments. It’s hard to find videos with ideas and phrasing. These are ideas I can actually use forever. Great video. More of these!!!
I love your videos bro. I love that you chose to include a digital fretboard to show what you are teaching. 20 years ago when I was learning guitar, this wasn't available. And I stopped playing after gaining some intermediate skills. The toughest thing I learned was probably the solo to Whole Lotta Love. Anyways, some songs had me stuck. And some concepts in creating solos were impossible to grasp. But now with youtube and videos like yours, I am making progress fast again and I am jumping over obstacles that once stopped me from progressing, and with quickness.
I love Guthrie and I love your videos, so this is the perfect mix for me. Your guitar style really suits mine, so always a pleasure to watch. Speaking of 6ths - when I first figured them out way back, I rather saw them as inverted 3rds, rather than 6ths. I know it's the same notes (for example, in the key of G, g string fourth fret (note B) and high e string third fret (note G) are sixths, but if you invert the way you look at them, it's the basic major third (G and B)). This seemed more intuitive and closer to my ear as well. This shape sounded like home in the key of G, which points to it being G with a third, rather than B with a sixth. Anyway, mentioning this only in case it's easier for people to pick notes in the heat of the battle when seeing them as (inverted) thirds, rather than sixths as I suppose thirds are more common and better known.
Thanks man and yes, I'm starting to aim my students at seeing the "6th is just an inverted 3rd" connection too - hoping for the lightbulbs to spark⚡️💡🎸🔥

Hey thanks Florian! Happy to be your nightly dose of "Fretflix"🎸🔥
It’s super helpful seeing the 3rds and 6ths back to back like that, really helps connect the dancing dots!
