Steve i've been a fan of your music since Guitar Town when i used to live as an illegal alien back in 1986 in Virginia. i followed your music since then in my country. regards from Peru!
Hey Steve, We love these! Thank you for being so generous with all the info. I hope you start making some more of them. Todd at Fraulini Guitars is the guy who's know about the relation between Bajo's and 12 strings. He builds new Stella 12 strings, Acosta 12 Strings copies and Bajos too.
This video is like a bowling ball made of razor blades. Gnarly. That thing sounds like Colter Walls voice. I love it. Thanks and keep em coming. I would be very interested to hear an update on what you find out when researching the Baja Sexto. Thanks for doing these. We all need something good coming our way. God Bless from home.
Love this song 'Angel is the Devil", thank you for all these Guitar Town episodes. That room is awesome, you have a tv there now to watch the outcome of the elections... Much love to the USA from Amsterdam, may it all go OK with the good outcome. ♥
I had a great night in The Everyman Palace in Cork, Ireland. I think it was November and1998! After a bunch of years and a bunch of videos like this I think the name of the venue was so apt... Steve Earle, an Everyman who turned a theatre into a palace...
Play the wabash cannonball 😉 Loved this episode. Always like the sound of a 12 string. I don't own any because I really can't count past 6 but man they sound great. I live in Virginia but I'm in Baltimore Maryland for work sometimes. Pretty cool to know that guitar came from so close. Anyway, great show and be safe up north maestro😎
Wow, that guitar sounds amazing; definitely old but full throated at the same time. I hadn’t heard of tuning down a all the way to a C#, but makes sense. Thanks Steve.
i so look forward to these episodes and have turned on others to it. i ve been performing copperhead road and goodbye ( w Travis picking) at open mics solo acoustic: gettin perty good at it🎸🎤😄
Very cool guitar and I had heard from another musician that old 12 strings were tuned down one or two steps because the necks didn't have truss rods. I'll have to tune down to 'D' on the 12 string I have used on occasion to see what it sounds like. It's interesting that this is a 12 string but there are only 6 bridge pins. So each double course of strings is attached to the bridge by one bridge pin. They must be pretty hefty pins. ]
How funny. I turned on the video to get away from CNN and there it is in the background. Excellent sounding guitar, never heard of tuning down a 12 string. Now I wonder if I should do that with my modern guitar. Thank you and be safe.
Steve, you are the real thing! Apart from being the same age and looking after a disabled child, we have next to nothing in common. But, when I hear you sing or talk it's like spending time with a best friend. All the best from the other side of the pond. I hope the loss of the orange one will cheer you up.
You’re speaking the kings truth.....only learned the 12 string tuning not so many years ago. Practical, sensible and one of the very few approaches for these gems. Should have listens to lead belly, just a little bit closer. That’s why so many of these gems didn’t survive time and toil, hurricane and drought at full pitch ...under a bed or in a closet. I include some Yamahas in that bunch. You are going deep tonight...I have that same exact trim on an unknown v shaped neck, v-shaped ladder braced unknown late 1800’s or early 1900’s Brazilian parlor I picked up for 24$....and just a few years ago. There are still unknown deals out there folks. Not many though....beside the Kalamazoo KG-32 I bought for 35$ 6 years ago. Cheers 🥂! I know, I know ...I rubbed it in a bit raw. Not all of us can afford TC Crandall. Not all of us deserve TC...I know, I don’t. “I’m not worthy”
I've wondered myself if there's a connection between 12 string and bajo sexto. There does seem to be a tradition of 12 string in Tejano music in the early 20th century, and kind of died out with Lidia Mendoza. I think Macias started out making them and other stuff, and ended up spending all his time shifting over to making bajo sextos and quintos.
I think the Gentleman connects without trying because he is 100% . Come on America the world is watching you, don't forget about forgiveness it's the difference. Lots of love
Hope you and John Henry are okay.... my 2 sons with autism are finally back in their programs, so they are okay, as an ASD teacher in the immigrant city, I am still remote....our ASD kiddos are struggling, are they not??? Music is the balm...thank you. Be well, Steve. You are a my hero, autism dad. XO.
I have a Seagull 12 string that I've had for about 3 years... I'm second owner and the guitar itself is about an 05 off the top of my head... if I tune it down a whole step, it's almost too low in the action. I pretty much keep it tuned to pitch and (knock on wood).... previous owner bought it new from the shop and claims to have always kept it there... it tunes and stays in tune surprisingly well...
He did say that, but it seems that Leadbelly's tuning changed over time, and there is the idea floating about that he actually kept his guitar respectably in pitch but rather that most recordings are played at the wrong speed. He was known to have definitely tuned to both B-E-A-D-F#-B, and one step higher at "C Standard". Likely also Bb and perhaps even C#.
@@SkipPlaysStrings One of the, if not *the*, earliest memories I have of reading is the italic “(H Ledbetter)” on my parent’s 78 of ‘Goodnight Irene’. Don’t forget Huddy did a lot of playing without any reference tones available, so “good enough for farmwork” had to do!
@@SkipPlaysStrings The Troggs’ ‘Wild Thing’ was apparently recorded with the whole band half a tone flat. The group consensus didn’t influence the ocarina, however, which helps ‘make’ the track. You couldn’t do it on purpose lol
[Wasn’t this one of 4 songs you wrote during your vacation? ANGEL IS THE DEVIL; HURTIN ME, HURTIN YOU; THE UNREPENTANT; and CCKMP. Glad you’re still here kicking ass.]
So that Guitar is 113 now ,survived both world wars, natural disasters ,been around longer than most humans lifespan and is still in tact , and playable ?? that can't be possible 🤔
Steve just make sure: (1) you have several locks on your door. (2) you don't fall for the bed bug scheme. (3) you don't give money to the nice guy that knocks on your door saying they live downstairs and needs an excuse to defraud you. Otherwise you'll be OK.
Is that why 12-strings are a Bitch for me to play? Are you really not supposed to tune those damn things to E? I guess I have noticed that detuned ones are a bit more effortless for me.
Steve, as a self professing Socialist , don't you think it would be intellectually honest of you to liquidate your guitar collection for the good of the community? Socialism is system in which the community/government owns the means of production after all, and despite you making a comfortable living owning your means of production like a Capitalist, I'm sure the government could use the funds stolen from that to fund some of the programs in line with your socialist views ...and you can feel good about living your message. Win Win lmao.

Thank you again, Professor Earle, for a rewarding history lesson and graceful performance.
I have to see Steve perform live. One of the best singer songwriters out there in my opinion

Is that a claddagh ring I see on the finger ?
Love the song! Have you recorded it? Other than on just this?
Was said blind lemmon tuned to something invetween a C and D .
Steve . You ever Run crossed Mike Shipley ?
I once heard (a video) of Pete Seeger stating that Lead Belly tuned to “somewhere around” Bb
He did say that, but it seems that Leadbelly's tuning changed over time, and there is the idea floating about that he actually kept his guitar respectably in pitch but rather that most recordings are played at the wrong speed. I will tune mine to pitch or a D sharp and use a capo. Mine are 24.9" scale length.
C# Sounds like a carni band behind you!

Modern 12 string tune D and capo second fret your back E
Sounds like Blind Willie Mctells original Statesboro Blues

@Purple Syndicalist In the months since I posted this I've attained a jumbo 12-string Guild and tuned it to C# and C and I've become obsessed with it.
Turn off the TV damn it !
