In 1986 I got married. My new bride and I drove from Vancouver BC to LA in a 1984 Nissan Micra for our honeymoon. We lined up one morning to get tickets to that afternoon's taping of the Johnny Carson show. On the show was the pompous main actor from NIght Court, and a new artist named Steve Earle. He sang Guitar Town. Last year I saw him do Guitar Town and Copperhead Road at the Grand Old Opry. Still sounds great!
Well Steve, my daughter and three grand babies lost their daddy June first drug overdose. It's been a ruff time and I really love him too. He was a good man very enjoyable to be around but couldn't get the monkey off his back. So sad...... I hope that you are doing good. Much love to you and family. It's very hard to lose a loved one. When I was just a little kid I saw Emmylou Harris playing a black SJ-200 on a Dutch tv show. It made me laugh, because that guitar looked huuuuuuge on her. But it was cool anyway and I always remembered it. Many years later I 'discovered' Townes van Zandt and he played a beaten up natural finished SJ-200. I've wanted a J-200 all my guitar playing life. Before I got married in 2002, my then-girlfriend took me to the Hollywood Guitar Center to buy me a good acoustic. I played every guitar on the walls of their very impressive acoustic guitar room. I walked in there with my heart set on a J-200, but walked out with a Taylor 815-CE. It just sounded better on that day in that room. No regrets but I still want a J-200. Some day... soon.
I look forward to these every friday!!!! you, sir, are one of the main reasons I've decided to go full force into the whole singer/songwriter thing....I just love writing my music and playing for people and you (and Justin!!!) were and are still a big inspiration! keep em comin!
I love that the guitar used to belong to John Leventhal, also a great guitarist. But, yes, I agree - 'strumming' is not a word I associate with Steve Earle's playing. Ye gads, hearing Guitar Town played and sung solo, just for us has cheered me up so much, here in England. 💕

I'm just out of Austin bound for San Antone
With the radio blastin' and the bird dog on
There's a speed trap up ahead in Selma Town
But no local yokel gonna shut me down
'Cause me and my boys got this rig unwound
And we've come a thousand miles from a Guitar Town
Nothin' ever happened 'round my hometown
And I ain't the kind to just hang around
But I heard someone callin' my name one day
And I followed that voice down the lost highway
Everybody told me you can't get far
On thirty-seven dollars and a jap guitar
Now I'm smokin' into Texas with the hammer down
And a-rockin' little combo from the Guitar Town
Hey pretty baby don't you know it ain't my fault
I love to hear the steel belts hummin' on the asphalt
Wake up in the middle of the night in a truck stop
Stumble in the restaurant wonderin' why I don't stop
Gotta keep rockin' why I still can
I gotta two pack habit and a motel tan
But when my boots hit the boards I'm a brand new man
With my back to the riser, I make my stand
And hey pretty baby won't you hold me tight
We're loadin' up and rollin' out of here tonight
One of these days I'm gonna settle down
And take you back with me to the Guitar Town
