It is, indeed. And heart-breaking that Justin is gone. Can only imagine how hard it must be for Steve Earle, making that album as a way of paying his respects to his son.
I met a luthier about 15-20 years ago that named David Schneider (sp?) and if I remember correctly apprenticed under D'Aquisto. It is amazing the work/art/love that goes into these guitars to make this sound. Thank you for showing this one.
A dream i have is to have us together playing music your a wonderful musician and i know its my sons dream to play with you. If you know anybody looking for a good guitarist or percussionist let me know 💗. Avery my son would love its one of his dreams he plays and loves all music. I just recommend my employer the center for Texas Music History at Texas State University contact Steve to see if we could archive these for preservation purposes. Hopefully they will listen.
Steve... You're my first major influence with music (alongside Tracy Chapman). I ended up being a massive fan of grunge as a teen and to this day I've been obsessed with the band Tool (seen em 12 or 13 times live). Even so...I feel like you're so much more influencual than anyone. Love ya. Be good
Also... Don't know if you remember this but my dad took me to a book reading at a church in Portland Oregon quite a bit ago and his pager went off mid reading and you gave him a salty look. He loves that story.
Steve you said " some time people put pickups on these Archtops and I don't know why ? ". I feel the same way. These Guitar are so labor intensive to produce I am surprised some one puts on a pickup. Steve thanks for the video, I love Archtops and like what you had to say about them.
Binding rot affects Rickenbackers as well. I have a 67 Gretsch Tennessean that was in perfect shape from 1976 to 2015 almost over night have the binding rot away. My 8 Anniversary still looks like new. Just bad batches. Great video and wonderful guitar.
Wowsers Steve. I just looked them up on Reverb. The original's like that are totally up there with pieces of art in price. Amazing guitars for sure. You're lucky on that one brother.
Hi Steve, I have a guitar almost the same as yours. Mine is also blond and the binding is still extremely stable (for whatever reason). But what I wanted to tell you is I love your song and that you played it on a guitar that has a sound you love, not a guitar that's supposed to be the "right one" for the right song. I too feel guilty playing and singing "the Circle" a D'Aquisto, or an original, or a folk tune or whatever....music. Thank you for your inspiration.
Beautiful song and guitar, though this song brings back some memories for me, specifically late 2003. Went to that "other side of town" a few times. Thought of your song and didn't stay after dark. Didn't have a special someone waiting but didn't stay. Another maple, pretty with a great sound. Looked like Steve was going to say something else after singing? Great info. The one off of El Corazon sounds like an old record playing. Love the videos.
Steve: I worked for Jimmy part time (cleaning and shipping strings) from 1972 to around 1981. Jimmy told me after John's heart attach, Jim DiSerio went off on his own and Jimmy D'Aquisto he did most of the work (while John took time to go fishing). Jimmy claimed the only thing John did not let him do was to dovetail the neck to the body.
Thank you for these videos. I have enjoyed them a lot. Hopefully you'll find time to do more someday. I'd love to hear you talk about mandocello you played on Jimmy Kimmel.

You might get a kick out of this. Sometimes I like to mash up songs, like Dyer Makr with the Stir it Up bass line and vice versa.( Zep stole that one too) My newest miscreation is Copperhead Road sung to the tune of The Stable Song by Gregory Alan Isakov.
Now I know why some people say all guitars sound the same. It's because they have never heard a Jazz virtuoso play a D'aquisto or any other guitar made by a legendary Luther because they can't afford one.
Steve, I used to own a beautiful 1942 L-5, and I have read that they "Go to sleep" if you leave them in the case for awhile. I swear, I noticed this phenomenon myself. It would take a few hours of playing to bring out the best sounds. I never noticed this on any flattop I've had. Very strange. Is this what you were referencing when you said that it would sound better if you played it more?
Bad binding was installed in beautiful guitars unbeknownst to the luthier. It was an undetectable defect in the synthesis of the plastic when it was installed. D'A's bad stuff came from a German supplier, same as Gretsch, Epi, Premier, etc. Rotting binding will always continue to rot. With the rotting, it will damage the wood, the finish and the plating and the case of the guitar, and even non-'infected" , adjacent plastics will often be affected. Ever wonder why that mint Junior has crunchy tuner buttons and that beat up refinned example that never saw the inside of a case has tuner buttons that are totally solid? Minty one got buttons from a bad batch of plastic. Steve, to do right by this important guitar, you must identify the bad pieces of binding and have them removed and replaced. The bad binding is eating this guitar. Nothing will stop the decay of the bad pieces. However, unaffected pieces are probably OK to leave on. (If it hasnt started by now, it's probably OK.) The faux sunbursting of the finish is chemical scarring caused by the bad celluloid. This stains the lacquer, and in turn, the wood. This will only get worse and I should also mention that the corrosive products of this chemical reaction are highly toxic to humans .....Get it off there ASAP. Sucks, I know, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

He usually plays Gruene Hall when he is down your way. In general, though, I have been told by a tour manager is helpful if fans encourage the venue to invite the artist if you want that to happen.
Great jazz players would play them, except that collectors, investors, traders, enthusiasts, and show offs with lots of money keep buying them for crazy amounts of money and driving their price into the stratosphere.
A wise Cherokee once told me: “If you want to know where your going, you first need to know where your at.” Then he handed me a roadmap. Makes me think that one of the reasons Steve gets so much richness from these guitars is because he understands the components so well. Regardless, Steve is a music master.

I used to say the same about acoustic archtop guitars; for years and when I got more into them they still sounded loud and abrupt. But after playing guitar for 40 years, I now mostly play archtops! It's a learned process (not to be Wes Montgomery) but to understand the nuance of archtops, how to hold a pick compared to a flat top (yes, really) how to strum them hard, fast soft and sound nice....I don't play jazz; I play blues, rock, jam, folk, Beatles etc etc.
For the 5th time, at least, You have to speak into the mic! Jesus man, don’t you ever watch these to see how well it recorded? You have 2 cameras! GET ANOTHER MICROPHONE!
Dear "Helen", When is the last time you had a hearing test? This is a non-issue. Maybe the problem is on your end because an unbiased evaluation is simply, "loud and clear." You seem irritated from repeated negative experiences. "A poor craftsman blames his tools." Respectfully Submitted.

I think most of the D'aquisto's are possibly owned by collectors not Jazz Guitarists or people who can play much. Sad. Same true for many other guitar masterpieces. I've suggested that James Olson just start making wind-up guitars that play themselves for collectors and millionaires since they are the only people who can afford his guitars besides music superstars loaded with cash.

The fact that a man of Steve Earle's stature gives his time to a small audience is a great measure of the man's character. What a diamond!
Great song, and great video Mr. Earle... You are by far an awesome singer, and Guitar (Town) Player!!!
Thanks for all the great music Steve.
Love that song, Steve, I think it's one of your best. It's got that Hank Williams Sr aspect to it...
Thank you Steve for you great songwriting and your RUclips videos!
Wow. Beautiful craftsmanship. That's one fine looking guitar.
Thank you Steve for featuring this beautiful gem.
A lovely guitar for a lonely song. Very nice
I want to write and sing like you one day, to me you are an inspiration and a true legend!
Thanks STEVE. That was a hypnotic performance, from both the instrument and You.
Thank you, Mr. Earle, for sharing your beautiful guitars and their stories.

Playing your ballad acoustically on a D’Aquisto is rare to hear and see anyone ever do. Thanks, you and the D’Aq sounded really nice.

Steve somehow try to find your way back into SAN ANTONIO.TOBIN CENTER. Thank you. SOMEDAY I hope that you get yourself a LIVE TV SHOW.
He usually plays Gruene Hall when he is down your way. In general, though, I have been told by a tour manager is helpful if fans encourage the venue to invite the artist if you want that to happen.
Why do we worship guitars? What is Stradivarious of violins?
:)
Great jazz players would play them, except that collectors, investors, traders, enthusiasts, and show offs with lots of money keep buying them for crazy amounts of money and driving their price into the stratosphere.
As always...top notch..and i love his wearing the X- los angeles shirt cool as the other side of the pillow 👍

He is making instruments with that wedge type bridge that D'Aquisto invented.
A wise Cherokee once told me: “If you want to know where your going, you first need to know where your at.” Then he handed me a roadmap.
Makes me think that one of the reasons Steve gets so much richness from these guitars is because he understands the components so well.
Regardless, Steve is a music master.

Sorry Steve you wrote some great lyrics but you're not doing that guitar any justice.
I didn't think the guitar sounded that good, too tinny.

Maybe, he just wants to piss you off. My first time telling you.
Dear "Helen",
When is the last time you had a hearing test? This is a non-issue.
Maybe the problem is on your end because an unbiased evaluation is simply, "loud and clear."
You seem irritated from repeated negative experiences. "A poor craftsman blames his tools."
Respectfully Submitted.
@@thereevus from 3:30 mark when he stands up. I didn’t say I couldn’t hear it, I said he doesn’t speak into a mic. He has enough $ to buy a lavalier OR just make sure he is in closer proximity to a microphone. This has happened multiple times.
When was the last time you didn’t respond to a “non-issue.”? Maybe next time you think you need to make a comment, you shouldn’t. Oh, also you can go fuck yourself. Not, Respectfully Submitted.
I kinda like the "bad" editing of these videos. It's very boomer-esque and kind of hilarious.
❤
