@@raielle I get what you’re saying but honestly I can’t see how technical limitations played a factor because the animation and style of the original still holds up. Like I watched a comparison a while back and while obviously everything is improved in the remake, the animation of the original was still top tier.
Nah for me, it just comes down to the writing. While I feel it is intentional for OG Ashley being a lot more bratty and helpless, even saying to Luis “I’m the president’s daughter💅🏽” in a way that feels like she’s playing up that status, it just didn’t receive well with most audiences at the time of release. Like I felt the frustration that anyone would have when OG Ashley ran away when Leon was just looking out for her. I like how remake Ashley just had a better set up as to why she would take off. It just works better and I end up feeling more sorry for her in her condition.

I'm sure the writing also effected things, as I do remember being frustrated at specifically 'how' she kept getting caught, but sort of like in a movie where they have to cut scense, or games where some plot points get abandoned, it may simply have been due to something as banal as 'not enough disc space'

      @rhysiare Год назад +575

Absolutely this. They turned OG Ashley from a whiny bratty snobby, albeit scared girl, to a still scared but brave and growing-in-confidence young woman. I love that you don't need to help her jump down from every jump anymore, that her only option of protection is hiding in a dumpster, or that she is callous about Luis.
I have to mention that they turned Luis into someone spectacular too. OG Luis, the only times you saw him were near beginning, at cabin, at castle entrance, and his death. He had seriously barely any impact, and when he died he was easily forgotten, easily seen in how Ashley doesn't even acknowledge it really. New Luis fits well alongside Ashley, he's more interactive, and when he dies, Ashley actually feels sad about it. Then, when they get cured, Ashley hails Luis's post-mortem ingenuity.
It's like thank you, for taking two of the most forgettable or unlikeable characters in the game, and really building them sky-high and making them a joy to have around.

      Really?
Insufferable Little Brat? Original Ashley actually did what you told her to do. Come to a new area, see a dumpster, be like "Bitch, dumpster", and she gets in it and stays there until you call her back out after finishing the area's enemies. You can tell her to stay put in another part of the map while you go and deal with enemies and they most likely won't even bother her. Enemies can't mess with her while she's in the dumpster too. Remake Ashley will actually come out of a locker sometimes while combat is still going on even though you told her not to, you also cannot tell her to stay put, it's either follow close or follow far, and during the latter she will get close to enemies and get grabbed very quickly.
Bravery? Original Ashley stood up to Luis when he commented about her ballistics, and literally told Leon that she is not becoming one of those things at one point, while remake Ashley was more rude towards Luis than brave and had to be ensured of her own survival by Leon.
Resilient? Original Ashley had her own health bar (Which could be extended) and could tank a few hits from enemies before dying, we're talking crossbow bolts, axes, flails and maces, and will still follow Leon if still alive. Remake Ashley will fall down and stay down from a single hit from a Ganado and will die from another hit if incapacitated, which makes managing her in the remake more frustrating.
Confident? Original Ashley not once had complained about the situation she was in, even during her playable section. Remake Ashley on the other hand complains a lot (Not that I blame her).
Genuinely Caring Young Woman? Did you miss the parts in original RE4 after Ashley hugged Leon after being reuniting with him and even asking if Leon was ok after the boss fight against Mendez? Or how about the scene when Ashley says to Leon "I thought you were gonna die!" after Leon goes through tremendous pain having the parasite removed from him. Yes, that's in the original game too.

At the church, she was freaking out and once we get spotted, she cries out in fear. As the game progresses, Ashley, much like Leon, begins to cope with the situation. Either putting up a strong front, like telling a Regenerator to “bring it” or using humor like Leon. I liked how instead of freaking out all the time, she instead adapted, wanting to become more useful to Leon, and even cracking some jokes about Leon needing her help and how good she became at helping him.

Ashley Remake: garners attention because of her quips, cuteness, bubbly personality, expressive fear due to her vulnerable horrific situation but despite that she shows courage to help Leon however she can because she doesn't want to sulk or die. Making her standout from the usual Resident Evil female cast in a while.
You guys: oh let's give/force her the motivation to be a trained agent who can handle a gun and be a 1 man army killing zombies. Like the 4 to 5 other female characters in Resident Evil.... Rose is also different but that's because she is literally a bioweapon.

I find Ashley to be a bit more helpful in this game unlike the original where she is totally useless.
    1. You can tell her to stick close or keep her distance during combat.
    2. She helps Leon escape the burning barn after the boss fight with mendez by breaking a window for Leon and helps him escape the trap later on.
    3. She can jump by herself or free herself from a trap without Leon.
    4. She helps Leon fight the armoured knights and manning a crane with a wrecking ball to smash a wall. And killing a monster by dropping a bridge causing it to fall
    5. She resist Ramone and saddler especially when saddler tries to control her mind and make her kill Leon.
    6. She is more brave in this game and found herself to have courage and she is more mature and intelligent.
    7. She heals Leon
    8. She is a great companion

      1. You can literally stick her in a trash bin or tell her to wait in one place while you handle everything. When running away she’s the most annoying
      2. Leon didn’t need help in the barn scene… is Leon so incompetent he doesn’t know how to escape a burning building through the window?
      3. I don’t even know how to free myself from a bear trap. And why would her freeing herself from a bear trap make her any better? Also, was catching her such a problem?
      4. Is Leon so incompetent he couldn’t fight the knights himself. I mean it’s fine that she did but Leon didn’t need the help. Also? She has a similar scene in the OG where she drove the car while Leon killed those on the back. So she’s literally doing the same thing lmfao
      5. In the original the only thing she resisted was shooting him, but even then the OG never had that so that can’t even be something against the original when it was never in the game to begin with. That’s like saying Leon is much better in the remake because he was able to resist.
      6. more brave in what way? Because again, OG ashley does pretty ouch the same exact things the remake ashley
      7. Leon didn’t need someone to heal him

In the OG she’s a lot more like a teenager but here she actually looks and acts like a young woman, and even if re4 wasn’t a particularly long game they managed to make her develop as a character. She started off afraid and dependent on Leon but as time went on she could actually help him and fend for herself too, even saving Leon at a point. She’s just really sweet and her dialogue in the shooting range is super cute too. Has to be the perfect remake

At 2:02 right before the scene switches camera angles Ashley disappears. The new Ashley may be great and all but can she go invisible?

OG feels like a comedy now, compared to the remake. Especially the ending scene 😂😂😂

Okay hear me out..the parasite purging scene..the OG kinda like they want to get hurt but be pretty🤣🤣and ashley be like "ungghh ngghh urghh" she is um so um...controlling like no after effect after getting surgery 😭😭. where i like the part about the remake where they are so dramatic. We can see the pain like how ashley scream like how human should be in pain like "ARGHHHHARGHHHH WAARGHHH" while crying which is more sense to me..if me im gonna try to kick leon like telling him how hurt it js..but then here it is..the OG..not saying its bad just umm..U KNOW WHAT IM SAYIN!!🤣🤣🤣and also if realized Ashley so concerning and keep asking leon if they were a team or something..come on leon..

The OG Ashley reacts the way anyone in her place would react. And compared to OG Ashley, the remake Ashley is far too dπmb while fighting with the Ganados, coz OG Ashley would be always right behind us & listen to our commands. The remake Ashley is so hard to protect. She's either too slow or stands in the line of fire.

What? Remake Ashley reacts how anyone should also. That would then be an ai/mechanic issue and not a character issue. Which varies depending on the game because I had zero issues with her standing in the line of fire since I used the stand back mechanic during combat.

I think we have to understand here that ever since RE7 the franchise tent to shift back toward horror oriented style which were lost in with RE4 OG, 5 and 6. So it is understandable that Ashley would be more of a quiet character to suit the atmosphere.
