  • Expat life! It's been 6 months since moving to Singapore (although it feels like 3 because of the lockdown, but who's counting) so I thought I'd tally-up a couple of highlights from our expat lifestyle - and maybe a few "meh" - as we adapt and discover the nany facets of life in Singapore in 2020
    Thanks for watching, and since you've made it thus far, go ahead and give this the old LIKE button treatment, huh? Thanks a bunch!

      It’s one of those things where the first snowfall is beautiful and magical - but by the time February comes around, it’s all brown a disgusting with car pollution, rough calcium salt and sand for road maintenance (so cars don’t skid on ice), with a thick layer of freezing-cold brown water under the snow that won’t freeze because of the calcium salt… At least in the city!
      Plus, it’s cold. Like, “it will kill you in two hours” cold! 🥶

    Simon was advocating a 35 hour week and a "work smarter" ethic for Singaporeans. I don't doubt that given the right circumstances anyone including Singaporeans would love to work less and have more quality time. Being a native Canadian, I assume he is referring to his work experiences there as a comparison . From 2019 IMF statistics , Singapore has a nominal per capita GDP of USD $64k and Canada $46k. You can say that Canada, although not spectacular, has a reasonably high income without the having to work hard. What must be a most salient point is that Sinagapore rose from an impoverished nation to one of the wealthiest in one generation WITHOUT ANY NATURAL RESOURCE. Canada, on the other hand is rich in minerals, rare earth elements and coal that contributed to almost USD 100 Billion in export revenue annually. It'll be an interesting discussion to see what the work ethic would be in Canada if they were depleted of all natural resources and wish to maintain their financial status.The bottom line for me is that hard work pays off.
    Well done Singapore. All the kudos to you and it's only resource- hard working people and progressive thinking government !

    • @SimonSaysCanada
      @SimonSaysCanada  3 года назад +4

      Let this be a lesson for me! I should’ve been more narrow in my complaint because it was targeted very specifically towards my industry, and my own field of expertise - not to the broader Singapore workforce as a whole. Interestingly, working smarter than other nearby countries is what, in my opinion, set Singapore apart from them and made it such a success story! Efficiency in everything, at every level, with great optimizations of time, methods and energy! I just wish my particular industry would catch-up and cash-in on those principles, the way it does in Canada.
      One love, I meant no offense whatsoever.

    • @michaelcho7636
      @michaelcho7636 3 года назад +5

      @@SimonSaysCanada No offence taken or directed at you. I perceive that you are a fair minded person and gave your opinion without malice. Singaporeans are not the best at everything and I have no doubt that you can improve their efficiency in your field of expertise. They could enjoy more leisure time as a result. I was hoping that my comment would assist you to gain a better understanding of their psyche as they have been trained from young to work hard to overcome their lack of natural resources and that the world does not owe them a living. Incidentally, I posted this comment on your "First Impressions" video by mistake. Case of old age without the wisdom! Hope you can enjoy the rest of your working life in Singapore.

    Yeap, long work hours is the main complaint I often hear from expats. Competitiveness & drive are common values especially among the Chinese. Not so much in other races. The Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong is a workaholic and expects his team to be no less. This government is one that strives for nothing less than perfection. They give out lots of government handouts, but only to people who work, not for jobless freeloaders. Which is why you never see homeless, jobless beggars on the Singapore streets. Yes, working hours may be long, but compared to many other countries, we have lots of public holidays , thanks to the various festivals of our multi racial society ! 👍

    • @SimonSaysCanada
      @SimonSaysCanada  3 года назад +4

      There is certainly value in hard work. Narrowing things down to my particular field and industry, which is not at all manual labour (I sit at a computer all day), working smarter and squeeze the most brain power out of each hour is what makes a difference. Less hours total, but each yielding much more quality results. That’s how we’ve been doing it in Canada anyways!
