      What it also looks like to me, is that the highways leading into the city get downgraded to regular (slow) roads very fast. This leads to trucks choosing a less optimal route; diving into the city at the first opportunity. If there was a highway that went on through to the industrial district, a lot of truck traffic would be diverted to there.

    11:22 Biggest problem I see (if you assume up is north) is that Southbound traffic on the highway looking to head East at the junction cannot because there is no connection, therefor they instead head West and use the round-a-bout to make a u-turn and then proceed East. Eastbound cannot go South. Northbound cannot head West. It appears to be a Highway T that got repurposed as a crossing junction but three of the required 8 transitions are missing. This is only adding to traffic going other places and creating traffic where a proper interchange would get them where they need to go without forcing them to leave the highway.

      For sure. I recently ran into that issue when it came to interchanges on and off the freeways in my current city build series I'm doing, where I managed to mentally space the other directions in and out of my industrial district, and wondered why I had such massive traffic congestion through it when I sincerely believed I had fully pre-planned the networking out (and in a way I absolutely did _PLAN_ it, but that meant the part I managed to forget stayed stuck in my head and never made it through translation into being built out lol)

    Pretty much have used 4 lane "pseudo turbo roundabouts" for quite some time. There is a limit on that solution but god damn, up to that point it is just amazing. And the solution to most problems when that fills up is to get the people going straight their own bypass lanes and it takes SO much traffic that if it clogs, the problem is somewhere else.

  • @tegneren
    @tegneren 2 года назад +12

    All the highway entrances are in one end of the city, so it really needs one that goes across the city so that you are not forcing all the car traffic through the city roads

    • @Pystro
      @Pystro 2 года назад +1

      I would actually prefer to have that traffic on the city roads, rather than a highway that cuts through the city. City roads are easier to cross with local roads than highways. And having too few local roads and collectors go across the highway will bottleneck that direction of traffic.
      Of course, a ring highway or two short pieces of highway that flank around the city and connect to it on the sides would be an even better option than the above two.

      Real support for roundabouts and mini-roundabouts would be great. Currently, it takes a lot of effort with a lot of mods to get a roundabout working in a realistic manner.

    • @aj2587
      @aj2587 2 года назад

      If you have traffic manager you can set it up under the policies to automatically put in dedicated turning lanes. You can also stop it from automatically adding traffic lights.

    • @Pystro
      @Pystro 2 года назад +2

      The functionality of TM:PE has been left out of the game intentionally. The developers didn't want to make the traffic managing too complicated for new players.
      If that is useful is debatable, since often the weirdness of unmanaged traffic can make playing the game just as complicated, once a new player's first city reaches 40k-ish population.
      I would argue that most of the TM:PE functions should be merged into a mod that is part of the base game (like unlimited soil currently is). And resource-intensive modes and the most powerful tools (such as realistic parking, advanced vehicle AI, lane connectors, and custom traffic lights) should remain in a downloadable extra mod.
      Having real support for roundabouts would be dope, though.
      A: They are an instance where traffic is especially wonky and a piece of infrastructure that you can barely get to work without TM:PE. In a vanilla game without the TM:PE tools at your disposal, they would have to follow different rules than other types of roads if they are supposed to work properly.
      B: The rules which the game has to apply in order for a roundabout to work properly are simpler than the rules needed for other junctions and nodes. In fact, they are always the same (the rules that Ctr-clicking with the TM:PE tool gives you). In contrast, there are 5 different possible set of rules than can be applied to crossroads-style junctions (no traffic lights or give ways; give way signs; vanilla traffic lights; automatic TM:PE traffic lights; custom traffic lights) and I wouldn't really trust the game to automatically choose the appropriate option from the first 4 items.
      C: The constraint of having to work in nodes and segments means that only unrealistically large roundabouts currently work properly. This can probably only be fixed by making roundabouts their own type of structure in a road network, with different behavior than both nodes or segments.
      D: If the game knows when a road segment ends in a roundabout, it can automatically smooth out the turns, which is currently only possible to do manually using node controller. Also, it can force such road segments to have a longer minimum length than other road segments (preferably a length that makes it possible to expand the turn radii without causing any glitches).
      E: If the game knows when a road segment is part of a roundabout, it can avoid merging segments into a curve of more than 90°; which is the mechanism that messes up the roundabout roads if you forget to brace it. (Although I would hope that this bug eventually gets fixed completely, not just for roundabouts.)
      F: If the game can create a roundabout which is a single structure (as opposed to 3+ nodes and 3+ segments, it could keep track of all roads that are connected to the roundabout. This would allow it to automatically adjust several aspects of the roundabouts.
      For example, the speed of the roundabout can automatically match the speed of the fastest connected road. The number of lanes on the roundabout can automatically be upgraded/downgraded to be 1 less than the number of leaving roads (which is the optimum in many situations). Or if a roundabout has one major road going through it and all other segments connecting to it are smaller roads, 2 lanes can turn off the roundabout into the major road. A roundabout with at least 2 pedestrian-enabled roads connecting to it can have pedestrian crossings enabled on all connections (even highway ramps) by default. And so on.

    My only minor critique is when different types of roads coming together cause crosswalks to be created. I always like to get rid of non-intersection crosswalks. There are use case for them but not by default . The common example is when you create the roundabout "spikes" or points. The game creates the extra crosswalks and while you are clicking on the go through button click on the eliminate sidewalk button. I think it looks better and you really don't want peds crossing at those sections.

    after all updates, upgrades and DLCs, I still would love for the game to get rid of the illegal maneuver of lane switching on an intersection. I don't think there's any country where that is actually legal, is there? It would make so much more sense if lane switching happened in between nodes instead of at nodes. It would also give the game the option to have vehicles make realistic changing maneuvers instead of those abrupt shock lane switches... (especially on highways the latter looks rather ridiculous)

    With how large those traffic circles are, I would have just turned at least two of those into bypasses (raise the circle overhead and have the busier road go straight on through). Also, that very first one you looked at is situated weird - it should have been closer to the highway rather than that horky-borky half-circle thing they did, and have the highway and other roads dump directly into it. To each their own, I guess. We all have our preferred ways of building. Cheers

    For the "less crowded" entrances to roundabouts: when is it enough to make the node larger with NodeController and when is it advantageous to put the split roads in?

    • @Hartbreak1
      @Hartbreak1 2 года назад

      With node controller I usually make junction nodes larger when it’s a collector road or larger. Local streets are already slow so no need for enlargening junctions unless it’s a very busy junction. For splitting roads on roundabouts depends on how much traffic is going in and out of it. If making nodes larger isn’t enough to flow traffic on a roundabout then it’s time to split roads.

    real cities should remove all traffic lights and replace it with roundabouts if they were serious about saving energy, and the traffic would flow much more causing less traffic>pollution

    That was a surprisingly effective way to show the work you've done at the end there. Which mod was that that let you do the exact same camera-path twice? I remember seeing that capability on some mod when I was going through them. But I have 452 workshop subscriptions, so I can't remember which. And was the B&W effect done in post, or is that also one of the mods?

      Thr camera pan path is recorded with cinematic camera mod and recorded twice. B&W is an effect added in post 👍

      @@BiffaPlaysCitiesSkylines I figured the recorded twice part. lol Cinematic Camera is that good at preserving passes. That would be really cool to know, if I did videos. lol

    Another impressive fix but again I find myself why you don't often use Bridges to remove pedestrian crossings as that would improve trafic flow.

    I wonder if you could have gotten the traffic higher (90%+ ?) if you had tweaked the mass transit.

    Is there a reason lane mathematics isn't done between the on and off ramps on roundabouts?
