  • In this video, me and my sister are watching a video from a guy named CGP Grey. I've seen a lot of his videos and they're really good. This is the first time my sister is watching one of his videos and we're both enjoying it. He talks about interesting stuff and makes it funny too. If you haven't watched his videos before, you should give it a try because you'll learn something new and it's fun to watch.

As a flag nerd, new mexico is the best. IT SYMBOLIZES THE ZIA PEOPLE OF NEW MEXICO, THEIR SUN. 4 LINES ON EACH SIDE = THE 4 SEASONS, STAGES OF LIFE, ETC. texas is cool too, and anyone that DOESNT have a giant ass complicated circle seal.

I honestly think the flag of New Mexico is absolutely perfect. 10/10. There is nothing to even nitpick. I don't even care if the yellow looks garish to some...
It ranked as the best one by a long shot in the 2001 NAVA poll and it's not hard to see why. It is very well deserved...

In the old days, "Commonwealth" was the English word for "Republic". "Wealth" used to mean "well-being", and democratic governments like those of Massachusetts and the other then-Colonies were founded for, ideally, the "common wealth", i.e., the good of all their citizens.

Regarding designing a flag, try drawing it on a piece of paper about a quarter the size of a bank note, because when it's flying high and at a distance, that's how much you have to work with. This is why all the seals on bedsheets rate so poorly, and probably why half of them added their name, which only makes it worse. I imagine if I, a foreigner, were dropped into a random seal on bedsheet state, with a flag 300 feet away, I'd struggle to guess it.
Something you cannot say about the S tier flags (especially Maryland. :P )

Among the flag rules: be distinct or be related, and be symbolic. Ohio’s flag and Tennessee’s flag manage to pull off both being distinct and being related, each with significant symbols cleverly built in. Ohio’s flag has the hidden “O” separating 13 stars from 4 (17 stars total for the 17th state) on a flag that is non-rectangular. (Squares are also rectangles, so good try Rhode Island.) The “O” is also symbolic of the Buckeye tree/nut.
Tennessee’s flag has the three slightly offset stars of the grand divisions on a blue background in the center of the flag with a white border separating it from the red background of the rest of the flag. The stars at the center nearly touch each other in the center of the flag. In Tennessee it is important to recognize the vast differences in landscape among the three grand divisions and the cultural/governmental impact. The US Quarter for Tennessee plays homage to the distinctive genres, but common musical heritage. It has white and blue stripes at the right of the flag.
Random trivia for Tennessee: Tennessee’s Supreme Court actually has three active courthouses (one for each of the Grand Divisions). Right now (March 2024), if a Tennessee Supreme Court Justice were to leave office, they would have to be replaced by either someone from East Tennessee or from the exiting justice’s home division.
