Fun to see the differences between the stories told by the pirate-hating majority and the pirate-educated minority as far as how the violence is portrayed. You've got the gruesomely detailed accounts of plundering and pillaging from historical works vs the high energy, mindfully worded, torture tactics (one might find in a horror movie summer camp) from the captain's descriptions.
aw mannn this is the only cgp grey reaction on the channel? that's said i want more, he's got such a huge selection to choose from and they're all amazing. hope to see some more in the future!
In the Golden Age of Piracy there was a lot of anti pirate propoganda put out to keep people from joining up. At the time it's not like pirates were more violent than anyone else. You had a more democratic job with much better pay. What would you want of the jobs are basically the same? So scary pirate stories were important to make pirates seem worse. Since every pirate ship made there own rules it wasn't universal but a lot of things people think all pirates did were capital crimes on pirate ships. Meanwhile England for example could "press gang" anyone they wanted for ships (cross Atlantic journeys might give you a 50-50 chance of survival just from normal ship things like weather or food) which they did a lot. And then they could use violence or capital punishment to keep people on board. Empires were doing horrifically violent things as well but in a way that kept rich and powerful people rich and powerful and poor people poor. They weren't going to just let pirates do their thing, so terrifying pirate stories to make mutiny or abandoning your captain seem unthinkable. Mutiny was the kind of sin that would condem your eternal soul, piracy the same. Also why the punishment also death, possibly with some torture and creepy things done to your body after you were dead to really send the message don't be a pirate. It was also the Golden Age of Illiteracy so we also don't have a lot of random records outside of the propoganda. So take it all with a grain salt. History isn't just written by the winners but in this case, by whoever has actually been taught to write.
I thought the scarf you wrapped around your head was a fashion choice, which it is in some places including some parts of Africa. I like it though. For some reason i find people wearing clothes around their head to look cooler than just their normal hair or any other hat.
No offense Skitten but before you explained the whole braids thing at the beginning I thought you straight up put doughnuts or pastries on your head and wrapped a rag around it lmao
GCPgray is a legend - noone does as much research as he is doing
Kurzegesagt too.
CGP grey
11:58 They torture seamen by feeding it to him while others watch, just like capt explained
More CGP Grey, please. His "Rules For Rulers" video is particularly enlightening.
I don’t think the scarf on your head makes You look weird it looks like you secretly have horns, super cool and cute.
