I’m glad to see your still Freediving. I thoroughly enjoyed your SPEARO podcasts, and hope you produce more podcasts and/or RUclips spearfishing/Freediving content. Peace
Roman…do you know if you’re allowed to hoop net off a kayak out at La Jolla? I always see tons of commercial pots but never see anyone hoop netting. Is it allowed? Thanks!
Yes, as long as you are doing it outside of the reserve and you have your lobster card filled out. If you launch LJ Shores make sure all your stuff is buttoned down. As long as all your fishing gear and hoops are out of the water it's OK to traverse through the reserve on your way to the open fishing grounds. Use the FishLegal app if you are not sure where the protected area ends.
How many nets are you fishing with on your kayak? How long do you soak the nets? Your opinion on using lobster scent with bait? Can you freedive AND drop hoopnets for lobster at the same time from a kayak?
Hi Michael!! Dude I've been hitting it hard over on FishyHour. We are doing a show every monday, tues, wed at 7PM Come check it out! Here is the channel... ruclips.net/channel/UCCn1GHPKGPrbwMntYSOW6Uw
Roman, you're fishing and kayaking videos are so incredibly full of information. After learning how to hoop net from your Twitch stream, I have already caught a bunch of those bugs. I caught 4 legals on Monday night, in fact.
Hi Ben, I just throw them in the front hatch. Some of my buds take coolers or fish bags. A lobster bag works well too. While diving I use a small lobster bag that I offload to the Kayak after I have more than a few. Good luck out there Ben!
Hi Tamalpias, Yes, that was intentional. I didn't want to blow up the spots I was invited to go on. It's just good fishing etiquette. Don't blow up the spots people take you to. That said If you are looking for spots to put a hoop down look for transitions from structure to sand or eel grass.
My family and I are totally new to this and we appreciate all of the info. Big question for me is how to find a spot to drop the hoop nets. What do you look for ?
Appreciate all the great info Roman!
My Pleasure! Have you been hooping? What's your lobster count so far?
Woohoo, thanks for using the LP bait containers!
Hi Geoff! We love em!

Thanks Jesse! See you on Fishy Hour! How has fishing been treating you?

Thank you for the help. Went to the pier yesterday but only got small lobsters. No keepers but soon.
I hear ya, the OB pier has so many baby lobsters. I recommend looking for places that may have underwater structure, like rock piles.
Hope you’re doing well. Haven’t seen a video in a while...

Thanks Zach! That’s a good haul. You learn fast!
Do you use a game bag to get back to shore or something else? How do you keep seals from trying to grab it if so? Thanks

Hi I noticed your finger covered the location code on your pre-filled tag. Was that done intentionally? 😅

Thanks! Great video. How do you store lobsters after catching them, and for how long can you do it?
Are spiny lobster mainly San Diego?
If you only spear fishing and not target lobster do I still need lobster card?
Nice job Roman, thank you.
Beautiful information!!! I learned a lot! Now I have to go back home and get my fishing license and mark it lol
