I WAS 19, DRUNK AS ALL GET OUT & SLID INTO A JAZZ THEATRE IN L.A....I HEARD THIS AND I NEVER THOUGHT I'D EVER HEAR IT AGAIN! IMAGINE NOW AT 75, I HEAR IT AGAIN FOR THE FIRST TIME...THANKS FOR POSTING!

That probably was the Zebra Lounge. KBCA jazz radio would broadcast live from there every afternoon!

I was 16 when my family moved to los angeles in september of 1961 from cold minneapolis. Ready for my senior year at john muir high school (bobby hutcherson and albert stinson..use to see him on the lincoln avenue bus) i remember coming home from school and hearing the crusaders live from the zebra lounge on kbca radio. Frankly Jazz was incredible!!! L.A. was hopping in the sixties going to lighthouse in hermosa beach (freddie hubbard/joe henderson) and shellys manne hole in hollywood (bill evans, monk, ornette, miles, konitz) ray averys rare records...what a great time !!!!

I was 14 when I heard on KRHM that the Jazz Crusaders would play a set at TV station KTLA (or maybe KTTV---either channel 5 or 11 in LA, anyway) in Hollywood later that day, and I rode my Schwinn Continental there to see the taping. Lucky boy I.

Jazz Crusaders, they can not be forgotten in the cannon of Jazz Groups. Especially in Detroit.

Joe Sample (piano), Wilton Felder (tenor sax), Stix Hooper (drums), and Wayne Henderson (trombone). Rel'd 1/1/1962 on their 2nd album for Pacific Jazz, "Lookin' Ahead"...when I was 21...…………... The great bassist was Jimmy Bond.
IN MY VIEW: just as Basie refined big band blues to its greatest level
so The Jazz Crusaders IN THIS ONE TUNE/PERFORMANCE
took the entirety of east coast modern jazz music from Dizzy thru Blakey, Davis, Coltrane, Silver TO ITS REFINED HEIGHTS HERE.
Can't speak to the music theory, but I know what I'm hearing here now and back then.
THEY JUST TIGHTENED THE SCREWS ***THE TIGHTEST THEY WOULD EVER GET***. "Hard bop".

I love trombone and tenor front lines like this. Pretty rare. And they kept it going into the rock and funk, too.

I remember this cut when I was little in Chicago in the 60's. This used to be my father's jam on WBEE back in the day. R.I.P. dad.

I remember listening to Young Rabbits for the first time...It blew me away. I couldn't beleive the speed or (chops) that Wilton Felder had on the sax. I almost gave up the instrument when I heard him play...amazing musician...sorry...amazing musicians...The Jazz Crusaders..they really where CRUSADERS!!! Thank you for this great journey back in time!

Hats off to Frank Evans for airing this program when Jazz was appreciated and it was part of everyday life! Now, try finding a Jazz venue in LA that is even close to this scene!!??

Some ten years ago there was a small summer Jazz Festival in Cologne, Germany, near the river Rhine. I walked along the quay and appreciated some regional groups, until I heard some real swinging music near the waterfront. The Jazz Crusaders, something else!

Saw the Jazz Crusaders last night at the Blue Note in NYC! Wayne, Wilton and Joe (no Stix) with Joe's son Nick on bass. Randy Crawford came up out of the audience unannounced and sang two songs (of course "Street Life" was one of them). Trust me . . . they were comin' hard!!!

ThanksX1000 for these J C's on 'Frankly Jazz' posts. (This was on VHS in Europe way back and I have been longing to see it.) There is also, somewhere out there, an appearance they made on Steve Allen's 'Jazz Scene USA'. Some of these are out on Shanachie, but not the Crusader stuff :-( .
FYI, the closing song on these vids is called Weather Beat.
They recorded it live at The Lighthouse, which has been re-released on CD w/extras and is WELL worth a listen!
    Thanks Again!
