i come back every couple years to listen/watch again ... usually inspired by hearing either Maps or Since U Been Gone in a store or in my car ... this is gold-tier youtube for me.
45 here. Accidentally wandering into a Ted Leo show during a bout of burnout with the hardcore/grind/crust scene saved my love of music. Can't wait to see him again on this tour!
I jast came back to this for the first time in 10 years after ted stopped by the WFMU studio the other day (jersey represent!). Hes so good. Love this guy.
Yes I love this I heard this on an Alternative Radio station like 5 or six years and I've been looking for it ever since and now I've finally found it. Nice. Ted Leo is awesome.
"The constant iteration of tracks, all produced by the same formula, can result in accidental imitation-or, depending on the jury, purposeful replication. Seabrook recounts an early collaboration between Max Martin and Dr. Luke. They are listening, reportedly, to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Maps”-an infectious love song, at least by indie-rock standards. Martin is being driven crazy by the song’s chorus, however, which drops in intensity from the verse. Dr. Luke says, “Why don’t we do that, but put a big chorus on it?” He reworks a guitar riff from the song and creates Kelly Clarkson’s breakout hit, “Since U Been Gone.”
I know this is a really old thread, but this is exactly what brought me here, simply to see if anyone had recognized this coincidental similarity in guitar riffage. I will point out that the two riffs are a bit different from one another after a thorough listen. Love both songs regardless
It's Kelly Clarkson's song writers that took the guitar riff from the yeah yeah yeahs!!! I think he is trying tp prove something here! props to you Ted! Find the connection people! ;)
He's definitely getting there. The first time I saw his band perform was about 7 years ago, just before Hearts of Oak came out and the venue had about 30 people in it. The last Ted Leo show I went to was packed elbows to asses in a much larger venue. Besides, who needs fame when you're the hardest working man in indie rock. If he doesn't tour your area more than twice a year, you probably live in the Alaskan wild.
OMG...i have been looking all over for this. For some reason, someone uploaded this song as a cover sang by Patrick Stump and that's what I've been looking for since last year (when I first heard this). I happen to like this cover :)
If anybody deserved that boost and exposure to a new audience, it is Leo. He showed some good trajectory in the early ‘00s, but then people began to taper off despite his continuing to release exceptional material. Criminally overlooked.
Here's the thing We started out friends It was cool, but it was all pretend Yeah, yeah Since you been gone You're dedicated, you took the time Wasn't long 'til I called you mine Yeah, yeah Since you been gone And all you'd ever hear me say Is how I picture me with you That's all you'd ever hear me say But since you been gone I can breathe for the first time I'm so moving on, yeah, yeah Thanks to you Now I get what I want Since you been gone How can I put it? You put me on I even fell for that stupid love song Yeah, yeah Since you been gone How come I'd never hear you say I just wanna be with you? Guess you never felt that way But since you been gone I can breathe for the first time I'm so moving on, yeah, yeah Thanks to you Now I get what I want Since you been gone You had your chance, you blew it Out of sight, out of mind Shut your mouth, I just can't take it Again, and again, and again, and again Since you been gone (Since you been gone) I can breathe for the first time I'm so moving on, yeah, yeah Thanks to you (Thanks to you) Now I get, I get what I want I can breathe for the first time I'm so moving on, yeah, yeah Thanks to you (Thanks to you) Now I get (I get) You should know (You should know) That I get I get what I want Since you been gone Since you been gone Since you been gone
I don't think he covered these songs just to show off how good he is, I think he wanted to show how Kelly Clarkson rips the bridge off of Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
I was replying to musicguyxxx's comment that Kelly's song was original. Since I doubt she wrote it, and it sounds like every other pop song ever made. And Ted Leo's video might be original, but by no definition of the word can performing a cover a song be called 'original.'
maybe it's not the case outside of Canada, but holy shit, are you serious? The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are pretty mainstream. "Maps" was on the radio here, like, every two hours.
@hock3ydud3 When you said sing "high" I thought you meant that it's hard to sing after smoking a huge bowl. It makes sense because he must be wicked high to do this.
ted performed this on his shake the sheets tour. saw him in SF and LA, and it was much more punk than this performance. he had the entire hall on its feet, jumping up and down to this.
I don't think he's trying to "draw attention to anything." I honestly he just thinks the two sound nice together. It's post-modern. It's just taking two things you like and mashing them together to make something new.
Someone on here said "but by no definition of the word can performing a cover [of] a song be called 'original'. LOL- really? What about Jimmy Hendrix "All Along the Watchtower"!!!!?????
Agreed. I believe there are plenty of covers that reinvent the source material - also think of Joe Cocker's "With A Little Help from my Friends" cover, or Cat Power's cover of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones. I definitely think that if, as an artist, you're going to cover a song you should make it your own and put your own spin on it, otherwise what's the point? (Hence why I'm not a big fan of the recent cover Weezer did of "Africa" by Toto - it's too similar to the original).
checking in 16 years later, this still rules.
still rules
This still rules 14-15 years later WE ARE SO OLD
Ha ha ha was just about to type the same thing. Literally, sing this (out of tune) in the shower every other day since 2007 LOL
we are so officially fucking old
How is it still so good though. Most things are bad by now.
i come back every couple years to listen/watch again ... usually inspired by hearing either Maps or Since U Been Gone in a store or in my car ... this is gold-tier youtube for me.
Oh my God, I had an mp3 of this song on my computer when I was a teenager. Just seeing the video now as an old woman in her 30s lol.
42 here, and have loved this since it came out ❤
41 and looking everywhere to find this now, I must have also had it on burned cd

I still keep coming back to this video. Well done Ted Leo.
Ted if you ever read these... This is the first real heartfelt thing i've heard all day. Keep on keeping on.
16 years later and this is still awesome. Ted must be the only guy in rock and roll without regrets.
Yes I love this I heard this on an Alternative Radio station like 5 or six years and I've been looking for it ever since and now I've finally found it. Nice. Ted Leo is awesome.
Ted Leo rocks, these songs rock, Ted Leo makes this songs rock twice as hard.

+nogoodbastid that's how I ended up here too
It's bizarre to think that Maps was out before Since You Been Gone
@@GNACreative me too

ted leo can do anything and it turns to GOLD
It's Kelly Clarkson's song writers that took the guitar riff from the yeah yeah yeahs!!! I think he is trying tp prove something here! props to you Ted!
Find the connection people! ;)
Thank you for still having this up 🥲
Ted, ignore the hater comments ... you rule!!
Truly amazing performance ... well done !!
Sarah, you were so sweet in 2006 … you rule!! Truly amazing person … i hope you’re doing well !!

awesome - i love imperfect vocals with awesome guitar and intelligence
Ted Leo is possibly the manliest man ever after this.
Coming at you POST 2020 to say that song STILL slaps and has for almost half my life now.
This song is haunting my dreams. I seriously can't stop hearing it in my head since I first watched this video.
OMG...i have been looking all over for this. For some reason, someone uploaded this song as a cover sang by Patrick Stump and that's what I've been looking for since last year (when I first heard this).
I happen to like this cover :)
a lot of people are tossing out hate for this... bottom line is that he is already more successful than anybody posting on this video.
I met Ted once. Really really nice guy. Even for being road weary.
I’ve met him too. Super super nice guy.
Karen O said noticing the similarity was "like getting bitten by a poisonous varmint" and I have to agree
Soooo fab! I love it.
One of my all time faves covers
This is great how he can change just a thing into THE THING
loove it...much much much better then i thought!!
The podcast Hit Parade led me here. Called you out by name. Episode was called The Silver Medalist Edition.
me too... great podcast
got chills when he transitioned to Maps
I can't say enough about how much I
I want to see you play a cover with a falsetto as awesome as this dude's.
Perfection
ted leo is very good, i enjoy him thoroughly.
!!!I always heard the other song when the other song was playing!!!
Love this guy
Ted Leo's vocals are so underrated along with his guitar playing. He is truly a great musician.
i love when he sings maps!
You might just be the love of my life, Ted Leo.
that was great!!!
Why do so many people dislike this? Ted Leo is the shit
I love this "mash up".
omg. this is awesome.
hey amazing
this is great.
Great cover.
This is fanfuckingtastic and will reside on my playlist forever. He did Karen justice and thats a hard thing to do!
Nice job. This is good.
God, his voice is amazing.
No, it really isnt
My sentiments exactly.
this is really good
Ted Leo is the man.
awesome.
Damn he has one of the best voices in rock. So chock full of emotion. Not the strongest voice, but it means what it says.
I’m just waiting for Steven Universe comments
I'm glad this is the voice of the multiverse murdercock. Him and his constant exuding of big dick energy
@@devinhuertas7825 yes to everything you just said

He showed some good trajectory in the early ‘00s, but then people began to taper off despite his continuing to release exceptional material.
Criminally overlooked.
@MatMorrisInGermany yes, that's how *you* sing. this is how ted leo sings. he's got his style and you don't have to like it if you don't want to.
I actually heard his version first! His is the best, but I must admit, I do like Kelly's version also. A terribly fun guilty pleasure.
he makes these songs sound good.
Ted Leo kicks ass.
Well done.
I WANT THESE TABS SO BAD. There's just a couple parts I'm not getting.
awesome
@alexsweely...who. is chris Leo? Ted's younger brother. He started the van pelt and the lapse.
Ted Leo is rad
Here's the thing
We started out friends
It was cool, but it was all pretend
Yeah, yeah
Since you been gone
You're dedicated, you took the time
Wasn't long 'til I called you mine
Yeah, yeah
Since you been gone
And all you'd ever hear me say

But since you been gone
I can breathe for the first time
I'm so moving on, yeah, yeah
Thanks to you
Now I get what I want
Since you been gone
How can I put it? You put me on
I even fell for that stupid love song
Yeah, yeah
Since you been gone
How come I'd never hear you say
I just wanna be with you?
Guess you never felt that way
But since you been gone
I can breathe for the first time
I'm so moving on, yeah, yeah

Out of sight, out of mind
Shut your mouth, I just can't take it
Again, and again, and again, and again
Since you been gone (Since you been gone)
I can breathe for the first time
I'm so moving on, yeah, yeah
Thanks to you (Thanks to you)
Now I get, I get what I want

Thanks to you (Thanks to you)
Now I get (I get)
You should know (You should know)
That I get
I get what I want
Since you been gone
Since you been gone
Since you been gone
ALRIGHT!!!
terribly AWESOME, you mean
nice cover!
I don't think he covered these songs just to show off how good he is, I think he wanted to show how Kelly Clarkson rips the bridge off of Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
That's how I found this vid. I dunno Ted, I just heard that Kelly ripped Maps and didn't know how. I wanted to hear it.
Dr Luke wrote Since you've been gone and he's all but admitted that it was a ripoff of Maps
its weird at first, but really good after hearing it a few times.
nice guitar!
actually your right NASTY thats true it was kind of stupid of me to label him like that cause he is just awesome in general
Agreed.
Isn't the first song by an American Idol?
I was replying to musicguyxxx's comment that Kelly's song was original. Since I doubt she wrote it, and it sounds like every other pop song ever made.

gooooood
LEO IS GOD only him could make a kelly clarkson song sound good to a alt / indie kid
i've loved ted since i was 10. i was a punk at the age of 10, don't you all feel uncool.
ted leo is fucking unstoppable
yeah taylor!
Can somebody post the chord progression.
Please?
Of he could make this song cool. Fuckin' Ted Leo. ❤

this and ben gibbard's cover of avril lavigne's complicated are the two greatest covers of all time
i just found out that butch walker's cover of since u been gone is a cover of ted leo's cover
He did it to show that the riff in Since U Been Gone and Maps is the same.
people that say it sucks. I would like to see them play guitar or sing like he does.
It appears to be 3:48am. Silly question.
ted performed this on his shake the sheets tour. saw him in SF and LA, and it was much more punk than this performance. he had the entire hall on its feet, jumping up and down to this.
Pretty damn Kool Aid!
nice....yyys!
@SomecallmeLuke Stanford Hall! Go Studs!

@MatMorrisInGermany and the point of my commenting was that you shouldn't tell someone how to sing just because it's a different style.
Aww, I was hoping it'd be Maps mixed with Since You Been Gone by Rainbow. That'd be the ultimate song. Oh well
15 years later and i never heard of that other song. this whips, nerd.

Not Bad Ted...4 STARS
A Day to Remember? Are you kidding me? I saw/was subjected to them in concert and it was atrocious noise. Ted Leo is a creative and brilliant musician
agreed
