My gift to you friend.
I hope today is good for you.
My wife and I were married to this song, the good Lord called her home, and now I'm alone but when I listen to this song I close my eyes have a drink and I can almost see her, it makes me feel wonderful all night!
God bless you .
I'm so sorry you lost your lover friend confidant.... it gives you no peace to know that she's no longer in pain or any kind of suffering because we are selfish and want them here with us.... but know that you will be together again. There is a wonderful book by Richard Bach Titled Illusions. There are lots and lots of wonderful quotes, one that may fit here,. Don't be dismayed at good bys for where moments or lifetimes, true friends will meet again." When young people die, I am always reminded of the prayer from the movie Red Dawn (1984) near the end....
"These were good friends. Take them away from here... someplace safe... where this world's war never happened. And as we remember... please let them forget, O Lord... so they can be little again." I hope you find peace.
Good for you!

You're so kind. Thanks

I'm a 44 year old black man (that just loves music). I grew up a dreamer. I used to sit around at my part time job during my first year in college at, Winn-Dixie in SC, and this song came on over the little radio they had. After thinking I would never find her, I ended up meeting my wife. This song takes me back, but to more than just that moment. Good times the 90's were.
Yes I miss these days
I'm starting to think we peaked in the 90's

The 90's had something special for sure. Everything was more simple... No smartphone, no stressful technologies and non-stop news. You just go out and enjoy life where you live. And then, back home, you turn on your radio and listen to those nice pop songs. Oh memories, sweet memories!
True, how i miss those years.. precious 😥

There's a strange feeling that's hard to describe when listening to 90s songs, with their iconic melodies and beautiful lyrics.
It's magical isn't it? It feels like Heaven sometimes!
It was pure music my friend. Music. A band was trying to make art all together. Not a computer.
These songs felt like the soundtrack to our lives.

I feel ya guys
He sang this song to me back in highschool, our classmates cheering and clapping, some on the watch out for any teachers coming in. When a teacher finally came in, she giggled at the sight of me and that boy.
10 years later, that boy is now my husband, now with a family of cats. My husband still puts this song on during our roadtrips ❤
Something about this song is so innocent and special and transports you back to simpler, better times x
It's the fact that it's about youthful romance (youthful as signified by "you father's map", indicating they are still probably teens); combined with the nature imagery (milky twilight, bearded barley, trail, moonlit floor, silver moon sparkling, treehouse and hanging tire would be outside and likely in the woods), which is romantic, and suggests youthtful connection to nature because young people spend more time than adults in those outside, natural settings, plus, the connection to nature suggests a more innocent time of man, when there was less technology, and innocent sexuality (just kissing, open hand).
Probably not anymore for some people
Spot on

Omg! I thought I was the only one who imagine. Hahaha
This song might just be my all-time favourite song of the 90's.
Man, we had it so good back then. Simpler times, no doom and gloom, just the joy of being a kid with good music. It was a great time to be alive.
❤❤❤
I agree.
the 90s and early 00's was a really interesting time in terms of pop culture (I am of the belief that Western culture peaked around the mid 2000's and that is backed up by the fact that (for the most part) the amount of quality bands/songs/movies has gone down dramatically since then.
Interesting that this same time period coincided with the end of the Cold War where the US emerged as the dominate superpower, but since then somewhere along the way the "High" wore off and things seem to be trending down ever since.
My childhood best friend would literally fight me if I started to play this on guitar at our rock band practices. It was always so funny when we'd be playing a gig at a bar and I'd get a group of hot girls to request that song just to see him fight an internal battle in his mind whether to, impress the hot chicks, or stick to his principles, but little did I know he was fighting a bigger battle in his head. He hung himself 8 years ago, but every time I hear this song, it brings me right back to all those laughs we had with him and this song. John I know you're dying to play this song for me now. I love you and miss you bro.
damn.
Well that was on Hella of a curveball
Man...
Title of your post: "When a light and fun song takes a hard left toward sadness." Dude, that sucks to lose someone close like that.
I lost a childhood best friend the same way. I feel you man. Snow by RHCP is the one that makes me think of him.
This song dropped at a time where life was simple, pleasant and fun. No noisy social media, no rampant smartphone drones about and no COVID. If you fell in love when this song entered your lives, then chances are, you’re still in love today. The innocence in this classic is timeless.
Straight folk had a better time and didn't have to worry about dying of AIDS. Parts of the 90's were horrifying and sad.
I was a kid so love songs were like 'no, don't melt my boyishness'
Now I fall straight into submissiveness.
Betul kali itu kawan, teringat awak zaman 90an tu kan. Mantulll boskuhhh 👌👍
Love did drop, then. No, sadly it didn’t stay but the song remains timeless and special.
Kissed my now wife for the first time to this song sitting under a full moon on a warm August night when we were but teenagers. That was 16 years ago, damn talk about right in the feels! Best years of my life back then.

Ahhh 90’s best era for music and life in general. Times were so simple back then.
18 years ago lying in the back of dad's Jeep next to my sister on our way to a national park in Thailand and listening to this song. Mom rolled down the window and I still remember that wonderful rainforest breeze. Best time of my life.
For some reason those memories traveling as a kids-teens with an specific song playing at the background always stays in our head. I have a couple of those too.

Lyrics
Kiss me out of the bearded barley
Nightly beside the green, green grass
Swing, swing, swing the spinning step
You wear those shoes and I will wear that dress
Oh, kiss me beneath the milky twilight
Lead me out on the moonlit floor
Lift your open hand
Strike up the band and make the fireflies dance
Silver moon's sparkling
So, kiss me
Kiss me down by the broken tree house
Swing me upon its hanging tire
Bring, bring, bring your flowered hat
We'll take the trail marked on your father's map
Oh, kiss me beneath the milky twilight
Lead me out on the moonlit floor
Lift your open hand
Strike up the band and make the fireflies dance
Silver moon's sparkling
So, kiss me
Kiss me beneath the milky twilight
Lead me out on the moonlit floor
Lift your open hand
Strike up the band and make the fireflies dance
Silver moon's sparkling
So kiss me
So, kiss me
So kiss me
So kiss me

The 80s and the 90s were a better time. A cultural treasure trove compared to the constant dumpster fire of today. I really feel bad for kids that have to grow up in the cultural wasteland of 2021. If the modern generation had anything useful to say, they wouldn't constantly be trying to recapture the magic of the past, and constantly failing miserably.

There really is something magical about this song. It encapsulates the 90s and the 2000s so well. Back when mtv was music like this and we had no whatsapp; Had to make sure your balls were intact so you could call your crush; This song's got that feel good vibe.
