Great Video! Thanks for the Tip! You save me from throwing away a box of Oats. Here is my story. I went to the store to pick up some Oats. I got home, and to my surprise, I bought Steel Cut Oats instead of Old Fashion Oats. It took forever to cook. Now that I have an Instant Pot, I don't have to get rid of the Oats. Tip for you...try cooking Oatmeal in Apple Juice instead of water. No sugar needed. Thanks again for the tip.
Steel cut oats are my favorite but the time cooking and babysitting them makes it more of a weekend endeavor but thanks to you I can do this so much more often.
i bought my instant pot and its been sitting on my counter for about a month. I looked at your video for the test drive with steaming the water though i havent yet tried it- plus now this recipe for the steel cuts - thank you. It seems less intimidating now.
+Sarah Smiley Hi Sarah, you're welcome! Please don't let fear stop you from using your IP! 😀 I have a hard boiled egg video as well. With the water, you really only need 8-16 oz of water. It takes much longer the more you fill it.
I'm so excited that I happened to see your video about how to cook steel cut oats. I bought some recently to cook in my Instant Pot. I didn't have a recipe, so I couldn't make any. Now, thanks to you, I do have a recipe. I can't wait to make some oatmeal using my steel cut oats.
Thanks! this is an excellent recipe. I, too, brown the oats in a little butter before cooking. I use almond milk and cinnamon and raw sugar when done. Delish!
I used to try to hack the stovetop steel cut oats method by doing the 5-minute boil the night before, leaving the oats on the stove (with lid) overnight, then doing the simmer in the morning. It greatly cut down on morning cook time. Tried steel cut in the IP today and it turned out great! I was skeptical of the IP when my partner bought it. So far I'm on board with it for cooking broths, grains, and roots but I prefer the slow-and-low in cast iron and a real oven for meats and veg. When I was single my only oatmeal toppings were raisins and honey. Now somehow they are cream, brown sugar, maple syrup (yes both), strawberries and blueberries.
Thanks for sharing, Tammer! I'm really happy to know that your oats turned out great! It really is so easy to do in the IP, and nice when you have a sudden craving in the morning for them. I also like slow cooked meats and veggies, but the IP is wonderful when you don't pre-plan (which is usually me). Love that you enjoy so many different toppings! Have you tried peanut butter and/or bananas in them? Just saying!
I tried your method and it works great! Checked a bunch of other videos and yours is the most straight forward and easy peasy, so I subscribed. Thanks!
That makes me so happy, thank you! I'm glad my method worked for you. Thanks for subscribing! Please know I make videos unrelated to the Instant Pot! :)
Thanks for your video. I just made my first pot of steel cut oats and I thought I would try it in and my Ekovanna insert pan. I wanted to simplify clean up so I thought I’d give it a try. I followed your instructions and when I opened the instant pot there was a lot of water. They didn’t seem to be fully cooked so I did another five minutes and they came out great. I also used chopped dates when I cooked mine for a little different flavoring. In the end, my pressure cook time was ten minutes.
Thanks for watching! I'm not familiar with the Ekovanna insert pan. Is this a pot in pot method? If so this could be why your oats did not cook the same way. I find that when I use the pot in pot method, it takes longer to cook foods. An extra five minutes is not bad. You can modify your recipe now for the next time you make them! Chopped dates sound real tasty. I also love adding different fruits, nuts, and seeds to mine! Enjoy!
Just watched this video because I've just purchased one of these machines and can't get the oats correct. This video helped so much. Didn't realize that after it beeps to not release the valve but to actually let it sit and count up to 10 mins. So thank u for making this video. Very helpful.
I made them and then added dried stinging nettles, kelp granules, dulse flakes, sea salt, then I drizzled toasted sesame oil and a little coconut aminos 😋😋😋. The direction were great, thank you!
I'm planning on cooking steel cut oats in my Instant Pot tomorrow. I followed the slow cooker recipe on the steel cut oat's package annd was no impressed with the results. I hope your Instant Pot method yields better results.
thanks for your video. I have only had my IP for a couple of months so I am still learning how to use it. One thing I do with Steel cut oats is use the sauté feature and toast the oats in some coconut oil.
How much time does your method take from the time you hit start until the time you can serve it? I cook huge batches of soaked dried beans in a pressure cooker and it takes about 1.5 hours even though the actual cooking time is about 20-25 minutes. I have a Fagor brand pressure cooker, but I might get an instant pot.
I put it on sautee.. add a tablespoon of coconut oil.. when it heats up I like to toast the oats a bit.. then 1 cup of almond milk, half a cup of water.. little salt and cinnamon.. Same cooking time as yours and top with frozen blueberries.
I cook steel cut oats almost every morning on my stove top and from the time I put the water in the pan until cooked is twenty minutes. I'm not sure this really saves time.
Thanks for the great video :) We treated ourselves to this IP and I can't wait to try it. I needed to make another batch of steel cut oats so this is perfect timing. Can't wait. it's such a pain doing it in the microwave even using a wide glass bowl (and switching from high to medium power after a few minutes) because of checking the frothing up level so it doesn't overflow all over the glass tray, which has happened more than once! I subscribed right after watching this and am looking forward to many more :)
Hi Cathy! You're welcome, I'm glad you found my video at the right time and hope you love making steel cut oats in the IP, along with many other things! I just love how easy they are to make in it. :) I currently have a few videos on the IP, and plan to make more, but I also make videos not related to cooking. Thanks so much for stopping by, commenting and subscribing!
Great idea to put a towel over the top. I'm thinking you did this to prevent the slight mess that the vent creates by spitting out a little water with the steam? Great video thank you!
Is it better to cook using slow cook or pressure mode? I did pressure mode with 17 minutes at high and left it out for 1:30 hour. It's still crunchy and not chewy like rolled oats.
I like cooking on the pressure mode because it's faster. I can't undersatnd how the oats would still be crunchy after 17 minutes of high pressure. Sorry this happened to you; don't give up!
i just got an instant pot and just read the directions...it does state that for natural release..it goes better with a rag or towel.....i have not tried anything yet as i need further instructions...thus, YT,,,,but, i just read it.....it says to put it on the metal part..not over the vent...so not sure about that part....
were your steel cut oats whole or were they cut? i bought some that are "7 minutes cooking" (i take longer even on stove with hot water)....so i'm wondering how long they may take in the IP..could you do a video with the cut steel cut oats?
Hi Sandy, I used steel cut oats, they were not whole. 😀 I have noticed that cuts can vary and some are much smaller. If you are using steel cut oats that are meant to cook faster, the time in this video will be much too long. I hope this helps!
I am a newbie with my Instant Pot, so this is probably a stupid question! What is the difference in using the Manual setting with High Pressure and using the Steam setting? Thanks!
Hello and welcome! Manual just means you select the time by pressing + or - rather than using one of the preset buttons. You can adjust the pressure to be Low or High, I always use high. I only use the preset buttons when making yogurt, not really any other time. The steam would work for veggies, and I think you still need to set a time. Hope this helps!
HI...basics never go out of style...great video...thank you! if I want one cup of steel oats, would you clarify the amount of water... do you think one cup will cause froth? Thanks again...
Definitely a staple! I'm not sure, but I think all amounts will froth which which you can just mix in. I just wouldn't fill it too full. Thaks for watching!
Those oats cooked 5 mins and sat for 10 mins before releasing the rest of the steam. There is way to much water left in the pot for my liking. So would you increase the 5 mins to 6 or 7 mins. for less water??
If the oats are cooked to the texture you like, but too watery, I would try a little less water. If you feel the oats are too chewy and need to cook more, I would increase the time a bit. Hope you find the right combination! 😀
Hi Robert, it depends on how much you eat every day. See how much the recipe I mentioned makes, how many days that lasts, and then multiply to make your weekly supply. Thanks for watching!
+pesto12601 If I remember correctly, I've tripled the water and oats with no problem. I think the most I've done is quadrupled the recipe. Hope it works for you!
Hi Autumn, I hope the oats turned out for you this time! I wonder what happened the other times you tried. If I remember correctly, the only time I had that problem was when I tried to make too much at once.
Hi Minner, I’m not sure I understand. I used a towel in case there was steam to release when the 10 minutes were up, but there wasn’t any. I don’t use a towel anymore, it isn’t recommended or necessary. 😀
If you are cooking something you know is going to foam, don't do a quick release. I let the steam mostly release naturally, rather than forced, to try and avoid a mess. I don't have experience cooking a huge pot of anything that will foam. Make sure to wash the lid thoroughly afterwards.
Hi Clarity. Sorry, I don't know your name :) I just got my pot and I was disappointed to learn that the instruction manual says to avoid cooking oatmeal. They list a bunch of foods to avoid cooking in the instant pot ... for the frothing / sputtering reason that you mention. The concern is that the food could block the valves on the lid. Your batch looked really small, though. Probably not an issue. And I don't really see what the concern is, unless they're afraid you'll get hot food coming up out of the steam release valve when you open it. That concern could be solved with your towel trick, though. Thanks for sharing your recipes here. They'll help me jump start my learning curve with this thing. Peace.
Hi William, thanks for your message. I also noticed the manual says not to cook certain things in it. I think part of the problem could be that the consistency is too gooey and it could possibly clog the vents which I imagine wouldn't be good. I just wouldn't fill it too much to try to avoid this problem. What have you made in your IP?
Clearing Clutter for Clarity - Just passing on that my manual ( for the duo plus -May 2017 - page 3 ) does not say "not to cook" these items. It says beware that certain foods can foam, and should "not be cooked under pressure settings unless as directed in Instant Pot recipes". The back of the included recipe book gives the instructions for cooking these foods, including for oats. So the take away is caution, and understanding how to cook foaming foods safely - not avoiding them. For example - smaller batches, etc.
Honestly, I haven't gotten really fancy with it ... beans, potatoes, steaming veggies ... no soups or full dishes. Just busy doing other things. And truth be told, I would rather steam veggies on the stove, because a soup pan is easier to clean, and so, all in all, it's faster. Beans in the pot are a real time saver, though. I don't have a few hours to stand over the stove. So, yeah, it's nice to have, and I'm sure my love of it will grow when I find the time to make more use of it.
after having steel cuts for months, i ran out so began using old fashioned. oh man i didn't like it...i'm not sure if it was the time suggested...i'm gonna experiment a few more times with teh old fasioned oats and time....i 've always done 9 minutes for my PIP steel cut oats with NR.
Porridge cooks it for 10 minutes unless you adjust the time down to 5 minutes, which is the amount of time she likes to cooker her steel cut oats. Have seen others use the porridge setting and it is very mushy compared to hers, but it's all personal choice :)

Hi Vallasia! At around 2:55 I put the towel on top of the pot so the steam doesn't go everywhere when I release it. Hope you enjoy your new pot, and feel free to check out my other videos! :) Enjoy!
+Vallasia Ortiz I saw your comment on the yogurt but can't find it now. Yes, the pot is supposed to say 8:00. This is how long you keep the milk/yogurt starter in there to incubate, with the lid on.
Our first time cooking with our Instant Pot! Finally someone who gets right to the point. Excellent delivery, thank you!

Is it better to cook using slow cook or pressure mode? I did pressure mode with 17 minutes at high and left it out for 1:30 hour. It's still crunchy and not chewy like rolled oats.

Sorry, I thought I replied to this. No, don’t double the time.
Considering the time waiting for pressure to build and come back down, wouldn't steel cut oats cook on the stove for about the same amount of time?
I’ve always found steel cut oats to take a long time but it would be fun to experiment with!
Cooking the Steel Cut Oates (or anything else for that matter) in the IP lets you do other things, you don't have to babysit it.

can you use mason jar to your instant pot ? for example for oatmeal
Yes, you can use Mason jars in your IP as long as they are meant for canning and can withstand the heat.

Sounds delicious! The only problem I ever have is that I always wish I had made more! 😁

Hi Autumn, I hope the oats turned out for you this time! I wonder what happened the other times you tried.
If I remember correctly, the only time I had that problem was when I tried to make too much at once.
Yummy!
Thank you
Why does the cooking time table it comes with say to use only 1.5 times more water than oats instead of 3 times like you used?
Very healthful
And delicious too!
Hi how do I subscribe to your videos or find them on instant pot thanks Carleen
Hi Carleen, there should be a red "SUBSCRIBE" button under the video.
Why did you use the towel to the vent the 2nd time but not the 1st time?
Hi Minner, I’m not sure I understand. I used a towel in case there was steam to release when the 10 minutes were up, but there wasn’t any. I don’t use a towel anymore, it isn’t recommended or necessary. 😀
What do you do about the foam, I read it can clog the vents.
If you are cooking something you know is going to foam, don't do a quick release. I let the steam mostly release naturally, rather than forced, to try and avoid a mess. I don't have experience cooking a huge pot of anything that will foam. Make sure to wash the lid thoroughly afterwards.

Clearing Clutter for Clarity thanks
So, yeah, it's nice to have, and I'm sure my love of it will grow when I find the time to make more use of it.
it was a warning printed on a yellow page insert not part of the original book itself
Thanks for this. I used the porridge setting and it was longer than was needed.
You're welcome! That's what I've heard about some of the settings, so I just don't use them.
Is it the same time if you double the recipe?
I’ve doubled the recipe and used the same time with good results!
@@clearingclutterforclarity1508 Thanks! That was a quick response. I appreciate that :)
You're welcome! Hope your oats turn out great!
A towel should never be put over the top of a pressure cooker. The manual (at least in mine) states this also.
Thanks
after having steel cuts for months, i ran out so began using old fashioned. oh man i didn't like it...i'm not sure if it was the time suggested...i'm gonna experiment a few more times with teh old fasioned oats and time....i 've always done 9 minutes for my PIP steel cut oats with NR.
I usually toast the oats in a little butter in the Instant Pot then add water or milk.
That sounds amazing!
Charliecontreras video
You can't put milk in because it will stick to the bottom. Steel Cut should be made with water.
thanks for the into
You're welcome! Thanks for watching. :)
Someone below asked why you did not select porridge? Thanks. You vids are really helpful and nicely presented.
Thank you for the nice comment! I usually use the manual button for everything, I'm just used to it.
Porridge cooks it for 10 minutes unless you adjust the time down to 5 minutes, which is the amount of time she likes to cooker her steel cut oats. Have seen others use the porridge setting and it is very mushy compared to hers, but it's all personal choice :)

can you tell me why do you put the towel in it please..I'm new to the instant pot
Hi Vallasia! At around 2:55 I put the towel on top of the pot so the steam doesn't go everywhere when I release it. Hope you enjoy your new pot, and feel free to check out my other videos! :) Enjoy!
Clearing Clutter for Clarity oh OK awesome thank you,I love your videos,I'm gonna try your video to make yogurt tomorrow, thank you
Thank you so much! I hope your yogurt turns out amazing!! ;)
thank you!!!!
+Vallasia Ortiz I saw your comment on the yogurt but can't find it now. Yes, the pot is supposed to say 8:00. This is how long you keep the milk/yogurt starter in there to incubate, with the lid on.
I love your videos, are you going to add more?
Yes! :) I just haven't had the time to make one. I'm glad you like them!
You're really pretty!
Thank you
Serving size???
It makes approx 1 1/2 cups.
yes helpful, but i just pop the presure valve as soon as its done.
Takes me 4 mins to do steel-cut oats in the microwave. I use half milk and half water.
Heloful, thanks.
You’re welcome!
1.5 cups water, 1/2 cups oats, 5 min at manual setting.....trying to remember that. Thanks
You got it! ☺️
Faster to do it on the stove total elapsed time, and large batches make a huge mess in the ip
What size batch did you make and get a mess? I haven’t filled mine to that point.
