It’s a shame. Me and my wife were both born and raised in Shanghai prior to moving to Canada. We have been bringing our 3 kids going back to visit regularly and just returned to Ottawa yesterday for our most recent trip to Shanghai (stayed there for a month). Kids were all happy to stay because the food was so delicious and affordable; everyday life was so convenient. Grab a chance to go visiting your parents’ hometown and I am sure you won’t be disappointed.

China is one of the safest countries in the world, thanks to decades of public security management and the improvement of people's quality. The cameras that can be seen everywhere are not used to monitor everyone. You can think of it as a time-lapse photography and evidence collection tool. For example, there are cameras everywhere on the road. When a car accident occurs, the traffic police can make a preliminary determination based on the dashcams of both parties, and then call up the roadside cameras to check the specific circumstances when the car accident occurred. Secondly, when someone's wallet/valuables are stolen or lost, the police can use the cameras to determine the movements of criminals and suspects, and then arrest them, and then return the victim's property or lost items. Simply put, if you have not committed a crime, attacked or hurt others, you can ignore these cameras, including the police and security personnel on the roadside, and then live your life as you please and do what you like.

All the European buildings you have seen was not European inspired, they were actually all built by the European when they colonized the so called concession part of Shanghai in the first half of 19th century. Shanghai wants to preserve well that part of history on the Bund, but also at the same time, to showcase China is already stepping proudly into the future on the other side of the river, the Pudong financial district.

We've been to Shanghai, China last December. Yeah... China is so advanced. China is safe with or without cameras. It's probably due in a large part to the culture in China and other East Asian territories which places the community good above self. Cameras are required for high tech and surveillance is part of that, and why not? And cameras are essential for observation, not just for the individual safety from such thing as theft, violence, accidents, etc. but also for the community, for example, to prevent such things as an unforeseen accident, such as a stampede considering that the number of people in any one spot could just surge and create a stampede or something. However, with cameras, you can be assured that you are like 100% safe that even an occasional drunkard can't get away with any crimes, petty or otherwise. And, why not? All the negative and false narratives in regard to cameras, etc., for example, are due to hypocrisy, jealousy, etc., and well, just blatant racism (but for racism, at least, the racists should not be inferior). I have nothing against China, but you gotta admit that China is still a lil bit backward in term of civility, don't get wrong, China is the safest country in the world, it's not crime or even petty crime, but small things like queuing, people spitting, do not flush toilet, loud (talk and playing music in phone -- I know these are people from small villages, but in general, you can feel it. Younger generation should take part in changing these behavior, because China get bad reputation because of this. Simply put, the economic run faster than people development.

Western companies have been making a fortune in China for long time now, for example Volkswagen which owns Porsche, Lamborghini, Audi, Skoda, Bentley, Bugatti etc. Make 55% of their profits alone from the Chinese market and they started making cars in China in the 1980's with SAIC (which owns MG) not too far from where you are now. Purchasing power which means how much an average person can buy is by far the highest is China compared to any country.

Yeah, sorry about the smoking, my guess is that it's the only legal drug in China. Not like here in Vancouver, where almost all drugs are legal and available. As a conservative, I really admire the Chinese government's zero tolerance on drugs policy. Wish we can have that in Canada.

The Bund and Nanjing Road used to be British concession, Britain had been in Shanghai for almost 100 years since 1840s after the Opium Wars. There were also American settlement and settlements of Germans, Austro-Hungarians, Belgians, Italians, Danes, Dutch, Swede, Norwegians, Spaniards and Portuguese. Eventually all merged into a single settlement called Shanghai International Settlement with own city council & government in 1854. France had its own settlement in the western part of the city called French Concession. There used to have Shanghai Racecourse (now People's Square & People's Park) and tram line along Nanjing Road under British rule.

My wife places of work has security cameras all over the place. Even if something/incident took place and the victim can't give the date and time that incident occured, the manager will not even review the tape. No one is that perverted enough to sit all day and watch your every move, you're not that important so don't fear those camera unless you're meditating on carrying out a criminal activity.

I've been living in Shanghai for 11 years and I still get goosebumps from that view. What is even more goosebumpy is going across the river to Lujiazui and walking amongst those beautiful buildings. My first job and apartment in SH was 10 minute walk from Lujiazui. Loved it!

I'm an American. In 2009, I was in the same "newbie" position you are in now. In fact, it was in Shanghai. I was surprised by how modern and well-stocked the convenience stores/dept. stores were. I have been going back and forth between China and the U.S. for the last 15 years. The novelty wears off, but on-balance, I like spending time in China. Like anywhere else, there are some scammers in the big cities. For example in Shanghai on Nanjing Pedestrian Road where you are, the tourist guidebooks warned of "students" who would do a "tea house scam" and you'd end up paying several hundred dollars on threat of intimidation. Many places in China are very dirty and have trash. And there is often "cutting in line" when standing in lines. That used to make my blood boil, but I learned to just take it as it comes. There is no perfect place. We're all humans, after all. The large cities have low violent crime rates compared to the U.S. The subway systems in large cities is excellent. The high speed train system is excellent. Good luck on your travels in China.

Just spent a week in China, first time since 2019, was good to go back. Planning a longer trip for next year. Had a fantastic dinner at the Peace Hotel and was able to see the art deco interior, spectacular.

If you come to Shanghai next time, there are some other similar places like Xintiandi, such as 思南公馆 and 张园. Also, instead of the traditional route of visiting the Bund, I recommend you to walk around 苏州河,乍浦路桥, 外滩源 which is more morden and less touristy. Also, there is a Chinese style garden which I highly recommend, it's called 申园. very elegent and beautiful, way better than the famous Yu Garden. Lastly, there are several old water towns around Shanghai. The best maintained one is 乌镇. Make sure to stay inside the town and you will experience the best of the traditional southern Chinese culture. You won't regret it.
Great video! Even though you said you had problems speaking English. I understand most signs in China have English on them and many people do speak or understand more than basic English. If you don't do this, it's hard to imagine how many hard drives are needed to store so much video data. If you lose something, within a week, the police can rely on checking the recordings captured by surveillance cameras to find who passed by that location and took away the lost item.

You should visit Shanghai and many different cities in China. I have studied in China. Shanghai is one of the best cities in the world. Beautiful and the nightlife is so good. It was the best time in my life.
It’s a shame. Me and my wife were both born and raised in Shanghai prior to moving to Canada. We have been bringing our 3 kids going back to visit regularly and just returned to Ottawa yesterday for our most recent trip to Shanghai (stayed there for a month). Kids were all happy to stay because the food was so delicious and affordable; everyday life was so convenient. China is one of the safest countries in the world, thanks to decades of public security management and the improvement of people's quality. The cameras that can be seen everywhere are not used to monitor everyone. You can think of it as a time-lapse photography and evidence collection tool. For example, there are cameras everywhere on the road. When a car accident occurs, the traffic police can make a preliminary determination based on the dashcams of both parties, and then call up the roadside cameras to check the specific circumstances when the car accident occurred. Secondly, when someone's wallet/valuables are stolen or lost, the police can use the cameras to determine the movements of criminals and suspects, and then arrest them, and then return the victim's property or lost items. Simply put, if you have not committed a crime, attacked or hurt others, you can ignore these cameras, including the police and security personnel on the roadside, and then live your life as you please and do what you like.

All the European buildings you have seen was not European inspired, they were actually all built by the European when they colonized the so called concession part of Shanghai in the first half of 19th century. Shanghai wants to preserve well that part of history on the Bund, but also at the same time, to showcase China is already stepping proudly into the future on the other side of the river, the Pudong financial district.

We've been to Shanghai, China last December. Yeah... China is so advanced. China is safe with or without cameras. It's probably due in a large part to the culture in China and other East Asian territories which places the community good above self. Cameras are required for high tech and surveillance is part of that, and why not? And cameras are essential for observation, not just for the individual safety from such thing as theft, violence, accidents, etc. but also for the community, for example, to prevent such things as an unforeseen accident, such as a stampede considering that the number of people in any one spot could just surge and create a stampede or something. However, with cameras, you can be assured that you are like 100% safe that even an occasional drunkard can't get away with any crimes, petty or otherwise. And, why not? All the negative and false narratives in regard to cameras, etc., for example, are due to hypocrisy, jealousy, etc., and well, just blatant racism (but for racism, at least, the racists should not be inferior). London, Britain has the highest number of CCTVs per capita, and yet the darn place is rife with crimes, the homeless, etc. And, OMG, the Brits, the pariah politicians, journalists, etc. want to lecture other people on freedom, safety, ethics, human rights, blah blah blah... they should take care of themselves first. Welcome to the future! This is true and real freedom. OMG! Regrettably, our once vibrant city now faces the distressing reality of numerous closed high street shops and a proliferation of individuals engaging in robberies , crack heads and violent behavior. Western companies have been making a fortune in China for long time now, for example Volkswagen which owns Porsche, Lamborghini, Audi, Skoda, Bentley, Bugatti etc. Make 55% of their profits alone from the Chinese market and they started making cars in China in the 1980's with SAIC (which owns MG) not too far from where you are now. Purchasing power which means how much an average person can buy is by far the highest is China compared to any country.
But when Chinese companies want to do business in the West, they will use of kind of excuses to stop them.
But now the US banned Huawei, want to ban TikTok and put 100% tariff on the Chinese EVs which are not in the American market yet.
When the 144-hour transit visa is going to expire, you can go to Macau or Hong Kong, then return to other cities in mainland China that will be next 144-hour transit visa.
My next visa will be a proper visa where I will have enough time to visit multiple cities.

The Bund and Nanjing Road used to be British concession, Britain had been in Shanghai for almost 100 years since 1840s after the Opium Wars. There were also American settlement and settlements of Germans, Austro-Hungarians, Belgians, Italians, Danes, Dutch, Swede, Norwegians, Spaniards and Portuguese. Eventually all merged into a single settlement called Shanghai International Settlement with own city council & government in 1854. France had its own settlement in the western part of the city called French Concession. There used to have Shanghai Racecourse (now People's Square & People's Park) and tram line along Nanjing Road under British rule.

Pre-Covid I travelled on vacation tours to China and always finished in Shanghai. I enjoyed the trips immensely. I met some lovely people, loved the history and the culture. Hope to visit again someday. . . .
Also suggest you to take the high speed train within one hour distance to visit another city for day trip. Just for experience. Like Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou, Nanjing for example.
The cost of smoking in China is super cheap which is probably the reason why so many people smoke.

FYI, the Peace Hotel is popular because it is a setting of a very popular recent TV series Blossoms Shanghai. A sophisticated TV series with interesting characters, Set in the early 90’s when China hits the gas pedal on development, and people got into the capitalism band wagon. It was an intriguing and chaotic transitional time in Shanghai society! China has not stopped at all since those years of the early 90’s! china has great history!
My wife places of work has security cameras all over the place. Even if something/incident took place and the victim can't give the date and time that incident occured, the manager will not even review the tape. No one is that perverted enough to sit all day and watch your every move, you're not that important so don't fear those camera unless you're meditating on carrying out a criminal activity.

Yes.this is the normal life in Shanghai.don’t worry about language barrier,sometimes we can use body language or gestures and understanding each other,people show thier friendly smiles and open minds with foreigner,but sometimes we Chinese people are shy to express.😂 and the situations you said someone’s bothering you to sell something,it’s rarely happened in china,like the last video you showed in the subway,i thinked ,they didn’t bother you,they just wanted to make some business with you friendly.the same way to Chinese. 😄 have a good time in china. Peace Hotel was built in 1929 and is a Chicago School Gothic building. It was built by British Jew Alice Victor Sassoon. It is a historical site. The hotel has received many world celebrities, such as General Marshall of the United States, Ambassador Stuart of the United States, George Bernard Shaw of France, Charlie Chaplin of the United States, Soong Ching Ling of China, Lu Xun of China, etc. Many major historical events took place here. The recent TV series ”Blossoms Shanghai“ about China‘s reform and opening up has made it more famous.

At the end of Nanjing walking mall street crossing over the Bund the LED traffic light sign "遵守 交通 信号" means "Obey traffic signals". I fully agree with your statement on "if you have nothing to hide what are you afraid of the security camera ?" which are there to deter and serve the purpose with crime or incident investigation. There are always crowds in front of the Peace hotel taking pictures were because it was the site where famous Hong Kong movie actor Chow Yun-Fat filmed the famous movie "和平饭店 Peace Hotel" in 1995.

Smoking is a problem in China, but it has been improving in recent years, and the Chinese government is taking some measures to stop people from smoking.
Regarding the camera issue, it is nonsense to say that it violates privacy. China has a large population and does not have enough manpower to monitor everyone. Cameras are used to collect evidence and prevent crimes. The more people and cars flow, the more cameras there are.
Nonsense. The Chinese government has never stopped country fellows from smoking. Eating food, having all kinds of sex, smoking & drinking are parts of the Chinese freedom for thousands of years. The CCP government does educate people the potential health issues caused from smoking and persuade people to quit smoking, but it never stops or prohibit people from smoking.
By the way, smoking was not a fashion before 1840 the Opium war. Its the British intruders who forced the Chinese government to allow Opium to be used by people, and addicted poor people had to use alternatives, that's how and why smoking habit spread out over China.
I have been living in China for over 7 years after leaving the USA in 2018. You mentioned the quality of life…it is AWESOME. I make a good salary and live like a queen here. I am safe and free. I love it here.

I've been living in Shanghai for 11 years and I still get goosebumps from that view. What is even more goosebumpy is going across the river to Lujiazui and walking amongst those beautiful buildings. My first job and apartment in SH was 10 minute walk from Lujiazui. Loved it!

I'm an American. In 2009, I was in the same "newbie" position you are in now. In fact, it was in Shanghai. I was surprised by how modern and well-stocked the convenience stores/dept. stores were. I have been going back and forth between China and the U.S. for the last 15 years.
The novelty wears off, but on-balance, I like spending time in China. Like anywhere else, there are some scammers in the big cities. For example in Shanghai on Nanjing Pedestrian Road where you are, the tourist guidebooks warned of "students" who would do a "tea house scam" and you'd end up paying several hundred dollars on threat of intimidation. Many places in China are very dirty and have trash. And there is often "cutting in line" when standing in lines. That used to make my blood boil, but I learned to just take it as it comes. There is no perfect place. We're all humans, after all.
The large cities have low violent crime rates compared to the U.S. The subway systems in large cities is excellent. The high speed train system is excellent.

Just spent a week in China, first time since 2019, was good to go back. Planning a longer trip for next year. Had a fantastic dinner at the Peace Hotel and was able to see the art deco interior, spectacular.

@@KouroshKamyabi Trust me, Chongqing is over-hyped. Chengdu is much better and has more to offer. PS: I am a Shanghai local. If you come to Shanghai next time, there are some other similar places like Xintiandi, such as 思南公馆 and 张园. Also, instead of the traditional route of visiting the Bund, I recommend you to walk around 苏州河,乍浦路桥, 外滩源 which is more morden and less touristy. Also, there is a Chinese style garden which I highly recommend, it's called 申园. very elegent and beautiful, way better than the famous Yu Garden. Lastly, there are several old water towns around Shanghai. The best maintained one is 乌镇. Make sure to stay inside the town and you will experience the best of the traditional southern Chinese culture. You won't regret it.
Great video! Even though you said you had problems speaking English. I understand most signs in China have English on them and many people do speak or understand more than basic English. It’s just more respectful to learn Chinese (at least basics) especially living in China for a fair amount of time.

Honestly, I also thought America was a dream place ten years ago. But I don't think so for now. One reason is that our country has developed a lot in the past ten years, and now we have a lot of convenient infrastructure, clean cities, and calm people. And you know my want car is to buy an Audi car even five years ago, but now, all the brands on my wishlist are Chinese. I chose Mazda five years ago but won't do it anymore.
