Definitely going to China maybe next year or two, it will be on a group tour. I know a little bit of Chinese (beginner level) and I am confident I will enjoy my trip even more. I knew Japanese (beginner level), spoke to locals in Japanese, they were surprised about that and I had a good time in Japan.

Sometimes halal restaurants don’t have a “halal” or Arabic word sign, but have a Chinese sign “清真” or straight in their names. Get familiar with this word so you can recognize it. Also a green or blue color shop sign is a hint for Muslim owned. And a lot of vegetarians choices as well!

Another reason why you can find a lot of Muslim restaurants is that they food they serve is widely accepted by people all over China. Not only Muslim go to muslim restaurants. None of my family members and I are Muslim but I don’t mind going to Muslim restaurants because their food is also very good.

If their family members can be traced, its by law that they are taken care of by them. Old folks cannot be abandoned and the penalty is harsh.

As a tourist,China is definitely a good country to travel and to eat. I stayed there once, when I was a child, it wasn't as popular back then as it is now but that was a different time.
I would recommend Xi'an, Chongqing, Chengdu, or Guangzhou. All these are good tourist destinations and are pretty more laid-back than Shanghai.
