this is a comparison of the songs, not the artists themselves.
We take a look back at the mild 2010’s pop chart battle and their respective songs “Applause” and “Roar” . Which song has aged the best?

Artistically, Applause won by a few hundred miles. However, the Prism era for Katie was a lot more successful than ARTPOP was for Gaga.

I agree, i love applause but roar was EVERYWHERE. Honestly, with how good teenage dream was, I would've hoped for a better trajectory for her artistic growth. I wish she wouldn't just look at it as entertainment, while Gaga looks at her work as art
For me, Applause is a better song and bop but Roar's enormous success can never be understated. And anyways, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry are a big reason why we all look so fondly back to the early 2010s. Great pop music, distinct and long lasting eras, and of course their pop culture moments!
Roar sounds like a commercial and the video looks like a tv commercial it’s extremely commercial unlike applause which even tho does have a pop mainstream element Gaga’s vocals make it more artistic and rare

A rather minor correction at 4:34 - Dope went to #8 on the Hot 100 following Gaga's performance of the song at the 2013 RUclips Music Awards in early November. ARTPOP had 2 Top 10 songs.

Katy definitely won at the time. Gaga had a really rough few years, personally and professionally. But i guess she came out on top in the end, because she had several really successful eras after ARTPOP, which unfortunately can't be said about Katy after Prism (Witness still has really high streming numbers, but it basically destroyed her brand)
which era are you talking about? Joanne? because she didn’t have that much success. Only the songs from the movie star is a born did amazing numbers. She did a little bit better with chromatica.

A star is born sold 10M WW and shallow is almost at 2B on spotify alone .. so yeah Gaga clearly managed to re-peak, Chromatica debuting at n1 too with a n1 hit and a top 5 hit and managed to sold 5M WW .. not to mention that The Fame Monster alone did 37M …
@@famemosterrrrr joanne helped rebranding gaga's career and allowed her to move to her leading role in hollywood way easier. her career is basically untouchable now as gaga has set her roots in both music and film. katy's last truly successful era was in 2013.
@@vicentesepulveda1129 Disagree, Katy has a residency, has THE BEST numbers at the Super Bowl, Chained to the Rythm was a top 4 or top 3 hit and Never Really Over was a top 20 hit. Katy is also a judge on American Idol and is doing WAY better personally. I think the chronically online people just LOVEDDDD to hate on Perry because of her haircut/image change which gave the impression that after Prism she was a flop when there are modern acts that can't match her current numbers and never will. I want both women to have careers and have top charting hits forever like, Janet, Madonna, and Cher.

I don’t care what anyone says but lady gagas artpop era is the best. The looks, the visuals, the music, each and everything was so unique, coherent yet different. Everything was perfectly balanced and represented. Artpop was so iconic that it’ll remain a moment in history.

Roar had more success but for me Applause is better, it’s one of my favourite pop songs ever. That chorus is just so explosive and euphoric. Roar is a moment though!!

Her 2020 album peaked and debuted at #5 in the US and went to #78 the second week while Gaga's Chromatica released months before was still at #46 when Katy disappeared from the album charts. Her Las Vegas Residency ending this 2023 couldnt fill seats. More followed by who? Gaga did a 2 month stadium tour recently and averaged 5 to 6 Million dollars per show. Sold Out Concerts.

And the BLACKPINK song peaked at #28 on the US unlike Gaga's solo song Stupid Love which reached #5. Get your facts correct.
It doesnt matter how many followers or views an artist has if they dont buy or support the music it doesnt mean anything. Gaga did not need them, Chromatica came after A STAR IS BORN which earned Gaga acclaim, 10 million album sales, #1 movie, #1 song, #1 album.
I think it’s also important to mention that this was during Miley’s Bangerz era - where she started acting crazy and grabbing headlines - at the time Miley Cyrus was the most talked about star not Katy or Gaga

Prism was the mark of her downfall. ARTPOP was the mark of her rebirth. Gaga may not have won this war, but she won in the long run. Now she continues to win, and the consequence beyond charts in late 2013 meant people bought into her artistry and she can sell tickets in 2022.
Gaga won professionally. But katy won in her personal life. :)
How was Prism her downfall??? Roar and Dark horse are some of the best selling songs of all time and the album sold over 10M WW. She then did the superbowl a year later and it’s still the most watched of all time. Katy’s the winner here
@@callumsinclair2562 yes Roar and Dark Horse were her last hurrah unfortunately, so it ‘marked’ her downfall. Prism, like BTW, was the sign things were going south with the singles underperforming. Katy won a battle, Gaga won the war.

Interesting note: "Applause" debuted at No.5 in the UK, and was beaten by Ellie Goulding's "Burn" which debuted at No.1 (same week). Also Gaga got a 2nd top 10 from the album in the UK with "Do What U Want".
Artpop is magnificent, it was just one of them albums we’d appreciate over time
People were saying Gaga was over at the time which is crazy because it was one of her best eras. She definitely proved them wrong though if you look at how her career is now.
That era was bad in terms of music but yeah visually really good. However yeah she is thriving now

I still listen to Applause to this day. It gets me so hyped during my workouts. Roar was a great song for the moment but I'm not going out my way to listen to it like Applause.
Gaga is a true artist at heart, Katy comes off a lot more corny but i appreciate her cutesy cartoonish aesthetic esp in vids like california girls. i agree Gaga takes herself a lot more seriously due to her passion for her art, she is more about creating art that she knows her stans will resonate with rather than the masses, katy is usually centered on PR stuff these days that gives that “commercial” vibe and it’s hard for stans to resonate with that
You put it so well. I always felt Katie’s artistry felt empty and void… I didn’t hate her but her vibe felt cheesy. Whilst as Gaga she was always burning with soul and attitude.
Katy and Gaga were actually friends before they became famous. There's paparazzi footage of Gaga and Katy walking together dressed up, and Katy tells the paparazzi "Have you heard of Lady Gaga? She's like the new Madonna, but better." So they were friends when they were starting promo for their debut albums, then they just hardly ever really interacted again once they became famous
The feud between the fandoms actually began in late 2008 when Gaga was interviewed by trl, dismissing katy and I kissed a girl, that she didn’t think she kissed a girl n wrote it for attention to channel the gays. Mind u katy was always supportive of her during her come up even before she blew up, after that katy took a shot back for Alejandro and they were back n forth with each other for a few years but seem cordial now.

The reason imo for roar success, is becuase it was litterally for everyone young children to the older people. Being in 5th grade at the time roar litterally played everyday at my school, never once I heard applause. But outside of school I would always prefer to hear appluase on the radio and I always found gaga more intriguing

Roar won, like there's no debate. 3B views, still getting streams on spotify, diamond certified, among other achievements. You can say anything about their careers, but this is an obvious win for Katy.

For a song from 2013 that's huge. Katy has 48M monthly listeners on spotify reaching daily new peaks for the last month. So be a little less biased next time.

I wouldn’t say they mirrored each other in their early careers, I’d say Katy and many others copied Gaga’s style and leaned into electro-pop after she pushed it to the top of the zeitgeist at the end of the 00s. Plus, even if Roar won the battle at the time Gaga won the war, just look at where they both are now career wise...

For me Roar was my childhood anthem for years. It was a huge step up from teenage dream but still having its own little magic which is playful and fun. Both empowering and colorful

I think I listened to Roar more on release, but I was in elementary then. What I will say, is that I revisit Applause way more and I haven’t listened to Roar since 2013 or so.
The thing is Gaga has had some sort of evolution that everyone really saw happening. Katy on the other hand seemed to be stuck and while there were notable changes in her style and music, it probably was a bit too late. Her last releases also did not help. Gaga made sure she'd branch out to other avenues of mass media to be more of the household name she already has been for some time.
i think artpop as a whole was before it’s time, had she released it 2015/2016 i think it would have performed better

Prism was nothing but another attempt at Teenage Dream. ARTPOP was actually ART and POP! Plus the Greek cultural influence in the album just gives it so much epicness.

Gaga is one of my favs , her provocative nature is much more genuine, she's always had an artistic vision , Katy always seemed to do it for the shock factor and to be playful which is cool too but I don't think it's comparable. Artpop is also my fav gaga album so I'm definitely bais.
I think the music video for Roar isn't intended to be well acted, it's a parody of old adventure movie cliches from the early 20th century, the acting style back then was also more exaggerated and not as naturalistic as today.
Lady Gaga overhyped ARTPOP so much and it was a humbling time in her career. No longer was she the thought provoking star that rivaled Madonna’s legacy. And since then she’s never been able to regenerate the hype she had in her early career. I do miss the days of her world domination but I think she became so pretentious during artpop and after half her team left she began to realize how much she relied on them for her success and things were never the same.
Overhyping was rather a promo trick than pretentious imo. Like you promise them a lot so they jump on it as soon as it's out. Also ASIB soundtrack sold more than the Fame Monster or born this way getting 8 MO copies sold so imo she did reach these heights again afterwards imo.
Me and my kids love roar I played it for them and they always karaoke it 🔥

Teenage Dream > Born This Way
Prism > Artpop
Joanne / A Star Is Born > Witness
Chromatica > Smile
Gaga was in her experimental phase with ARTPOP. for the most part, the general public tends to focus on vapid topics like being in love and loving yourself (nothing wrong with them, just they dominate the music scene), basically the introspective lyrics of Applause are "too smart" for the public. Applause is the better song, Roar is still a good song, but it's cookie-cutter formula means it does not say anything significant that hasn't already been said before.
As Katy is my favourite singer i like both. Applause is the better one if we tall realisticly, is one of her best songs and way better even than other Gaga big songs. Roar in the other hand is iconic, fun and catchy, however probably not her best song. At the end roar won in commercial success, but applause is undoubtly the better one. Katy has so many better songs

"Artpop" marks the most experimental era of Gaga in her career. The futuristic vibe, plus how Gaga and her team composed/produced such an album with different phrases of tension-release, as well as how progressive the melodies amongst "Venus", "Aura"? I was like WOAH back in the days, and now, nearly a decade later, I still find "Artpop" is the best album of Gaga's career. the visual might be too much for me but THE MUSIC HAUNTS ME.

At the end of the day some people are artists and want to create art, others just want to live their dreams of being famous. So "winning" depends on what the goal is and what the heart of the person desires.
In terms of “commercial success” we all know Roar won, but that’s not what makes music good or “successful”. Applause won by FAR in terms of pushing limits, taking risks, and overall production and sound artistically (in my opinion)
It’s the same in today’s music scene. It’s the artist who takes the top spot, not the song any more. Charts mean nothing nowadays…

As a kid. When these songs came out, I never liked applause. I much preferred and and enjoyed roar. Today, as I am much older I still think roar is better.

You didn't mention Sara Bareilles Brave. I loved both songs at the time. I personally loved the Applause music video’s avant-gardeness. It was around this time I noticed too that both artists weren’t hitting with the public like they used to still mainstream but not mega smash blockbuster success either

I love them both! And these songs…. But I’d disagree about the negatives about Roar… to be honest it helped me during a really hard time in my life battling depression. And the video I loved too! That said I think Applause is also a fun and great and empowering song!! I love both of these ladies.
