What do you mean, "underrated"? Cozy Powell underrated? Don´t think so. Cozy Powell has never, ever been underrated. He was, still is on the highest level you can ever reach, musically.
To me, Cozy was - still is - the greatest drummer ever to walk this Earth. He was powerful, creative and with that impressive ability to adapt to every situation, to all kind of musicians, and improve a great deal every band he's been in. He was the on demand drummer, as well as an adorable, lovable guy. Sadly, I was never able to meet him, but I got it according to many fans who had the joy of meeting him, and the musicians, who had him in high regard both as a musician and as a human being. Hey, you should be damn good on every aspect, to remain no less than five years with a demanding guy like Ritchie Blackmore!! His brief but extraordinary cooperation with Emerson and Lake is probably the highest point of his career. Cozy said it was his most enjoyable moment, a challenge he always cherished, according to Neil Murray; and although I already had the studio album, the Sprocket Sessions and the live album before, the box set released in 2024 is amazing, and does justice to a trio that, IMHO, should have lasted much longer. And indeed, I read rave reviews of the box set (of course I am the happy owner of it). One thing: the Space Gospel is the missing gem of the box set. Otherwise, it's fantastic. However, one couldn't help but enjoying this fabulous drummer in all the bands he played, his solo albums, and his cooperations. He may only lived 50 years, but left no less than arpund 66/70 records to enjoy him forever. To me, my thoughts, he will always be the best. And I miss him...
04:20 "The main hits from this album were All night long and Since you´ve been gone...." Excuse me, but something went completely wrong there. None of these songs are on Rainbow Rising, they were recorded three years later on Down to earth.
He was the drummer in many rock bands that I like. Still, driving at 104 mph, drunk, and no seat belt? That was a very stupid move. People need to be smarter than that!
A credit to drumming. Colorful life well lived
An underrated drummer for sure- one of the GREATS!!!
