Hi, I'm Puerto Rican and I'm glad to hear you that Reggaeton was something that really motivated you to learn spanish :) I typically never hear any polyglots mention this genre so it makes me really happy to know that you like it!

Watching Avatar: the Last Airbender in my target language is going to change my life! I’m currently learning Korean so I can connect with my grandma (in short), and while I like K-Pop, I’m not much of a K-drama person. I do watch reality and variety shows, but I’m always trying to find new ways to consume the language. I’ve seen Avatar and the Legend of Korra front to back many many times, and I’ll never say no to rewatching. Watching them in Korean, this time, will be such a fun and new experience!

probably the best video I've seen as far as being genuine in this topic. I'm learning Japanese, almost N3 (middle of the line) and always see people giving such a structured approach to language learning, I think it's good to have some structure but like you said, having as much fun with the language as possible is what matters most to me. thanks for posting this and have a nice day.

Yes! Another person who understands that it's just physically draining to talk to people in general. Like, I don't hate people of course, but being around them is just physically draining, and that can be a roadblock when trying to practice a language and speak to someone, since you not only have to deal with the difficulties of trying to speak a language you're new to but also having to deal with your introvertedness.

omg I'm so happy that you mentioned "set goals for learning languages", cause I absolutely hate when I hear this part in polyglots' videos! do i need to have a certain purpose to start learning a new language...? like I'm not going to study or work in a foreign culture, I just enjoy doing something new! so it is so fresh to know that I'm not the only person who doesn't see the point in going through this journey just because of some specific reason:((
thank you for this video, I like it sm!! your content is always so refreshing and interesting💌🙏🏻 love you and hello from Kazakhstan🥺🩷

When it comes to German I really found it good to get listening practice by listening to dual English and target language short stories... just search on youtube like German / English dual listening and you can hear short stories read back to you, one sentence in English, then same sentence in German etc... it's really a great passive listening way to absorb some of the language 😊 good.luck with your deustch 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

  • @ale_lingua

Ahh I love the advice that you give-so much is stuff I already feel / already do! As we say, “Now you’re speaking my language.”
Guess I just need to hear it, because even with structuring things to let myself enjoy the process and consume content I find interesting anyway, it’s an uphill climb.
Literally I love documentaries and learning about politics. Learning how people think and how different social systems work is 💖💖. Animal behavior and animal cognition is one of my go-to topics as well. Two days ago I watched a Nat Geo documentary in a language ✨adjacent to✨ one of my TLs just because I thought it would be interesting.
And last night I fell asleep thinking about how listening to German podcast and matching words to English isn’t an ideal way to learn the language as a beginner. Because you’ll miss out on things like how the word “Angst” is the German word for anxiety is also the word simply for fear. That’s something I learned on Easy German, though I had noticed it before without really being able to zero in on what the difference is between English and German.
I guess one thing I will take from your presentation is that I will start doing more quizzes and apps like Anki or Quizlet (I forgot the third one you mentioned).

I HAVE A QUITE HIGH COMPLIMENT TO GIVE YOU- the word "pronunciation" is very hard to say properly for polyglots for some reason, they either put emphasis in the wrong place or something, and you nailed it! I'ts like the 1 tell word. But yeah in convo we don't care about accent unless we can't understand your or are a bigot. And the latter you can;t do anything about. Congrats on your lang. ability as such a youthful age. AND your sense of humor is just natural and refreshing.

    COMPLETELY AGREE
like I have a goal in learning English, this goal is motivating me constantly, but that's now the main thing
the very process of learning a new language is damn fascinating
languages are ways of communicating with people, exchanging information
when you start learning a new language you can get a whole lot of new knowledge, there are so many interesting things! you need to like the process of consuming this info, or learning a language will become a torture

Needing a connection makes so much sense. I'm actually so good in english because I consume it daily and use it all the time and I love the UK and just communicating with people online, but with french (which I studied in school for SIX FREAKING YEARS) I had no connection to it. I learned to hate the subject and the language and the country. I hate the whole concept of france, all because I never got a hang of the language. That made it just so difficult for me to learn it. Now I'm studying Spanish because I might move there for a few months and its so fun

Four years later and I'm still learning, but terrified to speak to anyone. Jokes on me though, cause I live in Bulgaria now and avoid people and human interactions like the plague.

I personally like the aesthetics of anime. Never seen anime, but I see anime backgrounds on aesthetically pleasing lofi music that I like.
So I watched anime for the first time ever. Neon Genesis Evangelion. I like it. I'm watching it in japanese, TL subs too so I have like 2% understanding of what's being said (mostly thanks to visual context) and that's 2% more than I expected, so it's beautiful to see.
Japanese used to sound like gibberish to me, but having listened to japanese for weeks on end, eventually a month of total time (on and off), I recognise it as words now. Like, I can tell when the new words begin in the sentence (sometimes).
I'm still mostly demotivated, but I still listen to it because I know if I keep going, my brain will do the rest, as it is a repetition recognition machine.

Thanks! That was a lot of fun! Helpful advice too. Comic books seemed to help me years ago while failing French in school. Motivation is key. I like to study cultures, history and religion. The Sami Peoples of the European arctic have held my attention for years. I'm old now and can afford to travel. Therefore learning Norwegian seemed the most logical intermediary language. I cannot learn Sami without going to their school(s). They have one Sami Cultural School that offers Language courses ... but only 15 slots with priority given to Sami people who live in the Arctic Region. 👿 Planning Trip to Alta for mid-July. (PS: Nice to see Goths can be from Turkey and travel the World too! Not just living in our little "bat Caves." Thanks again -Trask

This may help someone, and kind of relates to your suggestion of writing song lyrics in your target language. So, there's a movie that I memorized the entire script (no, not Bee movie, but that would be funny lol). I got a caption file in my target language and boom. Grammatically correct translation. I pick a few words from each sentence and over time, I remember them. I guess that's how many people learn English by watching English TV.

Hi! Happy New Year!! I’m currently learning korean just because I’m interested in the language. I am a higher beginner and my question is when you’re learning a language and you are in the first stages of the process (which you basically can only write a few really simple sentences) how come can you watch a documentary and understand what they’re talking about in your target language? I am studying languages just for fun, as a hobby. However, sometimes I feel unmotivated when I cannot understand a single sentence. Has this ever happened to you?

I think in your case focusing on writing and speaking would help you more then passively learning it since you already had so much input!:)

Awesome content! But I feel like people waste too much time on vocabulary lists. Instead of memorizing thousands of words, we should focus on mastering the most common 500 words and actually using them in conversations.
It's way more effective than trying to learn everything at once. Anyone else agree?
