It is awesome. I always recommend getting 5 Parsecs from Home to go with it. Kinda makes it 2 games in one if you are into that type of gaming

So I missed the boat on the KS version of this. What would you suggest first time buyer get?

Either of the Core sets will serve you fine. They both have their advantages/disadvantages. The original set has two teams of traders (player characters) and civilians, but fewer enemies. Lots of expansion material as well.
The First Born set is designed for solo/coop play as it only has a single team of traders. It has a few more enemy models though and hunters who can be traders too.
I would lean slightly towards the first set but only barely. They both are really good.
